Valve Pimps PC Gaming
It's a pretty slow time for PC gaming exclusives at the moment simply because consoles are so profitable right now with even hardcoreish titles, such as IL-2, making the jump. I lament the death of the hardcore space sim, but it's a sign of the times.

Which is where the sheer quantity of it becomes a factor. Even most JRPGs are relatively light on words per minute compared to an MGS game.

Similar controls, but Freelancer never felt even slightly like a spaceship flying game, while DS did (to an extent), thanks to not being trapped on the X and having a Z (roll) axis to play with. I mean, Freelancer didn't even feel like being in space thanks to it's relative '2Dness'.

Yeah, that's probably where the 'too much plot' thing comes from, which is somthing I agree with, even as a fan of the series. I enjoy the series (hell, I completed MGS in one sitting) but it's the storytelling which is great, while the plot itself, post MGS1, leaves kind of a bad taste in my mouth. It's like the anti-halo (a series with some of the worst sorytelling in the history of games, which is a pity since the plot itself is actually quite good). All opinion, obviously, but it says a lot that even Kojima regrets making the plot of MGS2 so complex (which knocked on to 4 so that loose ends could be tied up).

plot =/= emotional impact or storytelling. Plot CAN be read, it's the latter two have to be experienced. We're not even talking about a game with branching paths or interactive cutscenes so the plot is completely static. EDIT: unless you were specifically refering to the plot summery on wiki being lackluster.

They're really saved by good VAs. Makes all the difference between somthing that's actually enjoyable and dubbed 80s anime.

Darkstar one has actual space combat though. Freelancer was a good game, but it wasn't a space sim.

McDonald's Is Healthy!
The issue is the saturated fats and the buttloads of sugar, it doesn't matter how good the other stuff is, it doesn't make up for them. It's like filling a car with petrol then topping it up with crude oil and expecting it not to wreck the engine. Speaking of fat, simply listing 'fat' under 'somthing the body needs' as if all fat was the same is a gross inaccuracy in the same way as listing 'metal' as somthing an aircraft needs. That is to say, use the wrong kind and you end up with a deathtrap, and fast food is generally full of 'the wrong kinds'.

That's kind of like Defending Ikaruga by saying 'but there's dot-eater!'. I mean, the same was true of previous MGS games, but the lack of convenient 'run and gun' options in those forced you down those paths, rather than making them optional. I'm not saying that stealth options arn't nice (i'm not even saying that the gameplay is bad), but as soon as they're optional, it's not really a stealth game.

If you can actually play online, Halo3 is somthing we're always going to come back to, ultimately.

Someone's going to suggest Freelancer sooner or later. It deffinately falls into the genre, but very much at the casual end of the scale. If you want somthing more hardcore, go for X3, as Tale says. The off the shelf version is apprently very buggy, so either get the rereleased '2,0' version, or else buy it off steam. http://www.amazon.com/Enlight-10153-X3-The...8384&sr=8-1

Jagged Alliance 2
She starts with 'trainer' and is free, so she's great for keeping your militias up to speed. Bandages don't stop your guys dueing btw. When they take a hit some of it still comes out of the 'raw' HP, and if that drops to zero they die, even if they've still got bandage HP left. Also, stat drops from hits won't be restored by bandages, as has been said.

The problem is twofold, you 'can' play normally by simply not overspending what you'd have anyway, but the infinite money bug caps your money at a cirtain level, so trying to spend more than that at any one time becomes impossible. If you're only interested in the combat then you can play the game happily with this bug but it pretty much ruined the meta-strategy portion of the game for me, even with 'restraint' and doubly so as it was my first time playing the game. Not being able to save at all in the addon speaks for itself.

Jagged Alliance 2
I bought the steam version without knowing about the bugs. It totally ruins the game, don't even bother. To actually play the thing I had to torrent it.

A new Xcom would be groovy, not just a graphical upgrade, but it doesn't HAVE to try and be radical either. The xcom hud was godawful for a start.
