  1. The outbreak is accelerating in Florida. They reported over 21K new cases in one day; 100k in a week. For comparison, my state of Washington has had a total of 475K cases for the entire pandemic. 8,800 patients were hospitalized last week.
  2. It's the start of a B sci-fi movie called, "The Russian Module". Dun-dun-duuunnn...
  3. 60% of astronauts test positive for active herpes virus in space
  4. Not quite. What fades are the antibodies. You presumably still get the long-lasting B- and T-cell memory so your body knows how to fight the infection. Anyway, this belongs in the COVID-19 thread.
  5. Rare Snowfall in Tropical Brazil
  6. The Swedish women's football team is looking very good. The US side seems... out of form. I've rarely seen their passing be so sloppy.
  7. An Outbreak Of The Coronavirus Delta Variant Has Spread To 15 Chinese Cities Now we may see how efficacious (or not) the Sinovac and Sinopharm will prove to be. Then again they'll probably just hide the data.
  8. Not to quibble, but I'd imagine that four-wheel drive is useful while driving on sand.
  9. Lrrr of Omicron Persei 8 approves of this choice, and will not blow up the planet after all.
  10. Aww...
  11. There are some indications that the issues may persist. Doctors Worry That Memory Problems After COVID-19 May Set The Stage For Alzheimer's
  12. Sure, why not? We have a field of astrobiology now, so why not look for signs of past visits? Personally I think we might find something when we do in-depth searches of the asteroid belt. That's an ideal location for Von Neuman-style self-replicating machines to make more copies of themselves.
  13. For most of the body I would expect some degree of recovery. Loss of brain function though seems much more problematic. It might prove similar to a stroke, where it takes years of work to retrain the brain.
  14. Large study finds COVID-19 is linked to a substantial drop in intelligence If confirmed, I have to think this may be the most disturbing find thus far.
  15. Steven Weinberg
  16. Kind of true though; all she had was a cool head and some technology. The other two had superpowers.
  17. I worked with a couple of New Yorkers who basically said that Trump is always saying stupid things, and everybody there just ignored him. Now the country just needs to learn the same lesson.
  18. I hope she takes a few in-flight photos.
  19. Astronomers make first clear detection of a moon-forming disc around an exoplanet
  20. Looks a little dingy.
  21. Particularly when the results are time-sensitive, such as medical treatments during a pandemic. This really should have been caught during peer review.
  22. He and Gov. Abbott seem to be the current standard bearers for the Trump "doctrine", such as it is. I think DeSantis has ambitions of higher office, so he'll keep catering to the Trump base. That includes egregious (and intentional) mis-management of quarantine measures, disparaging Dr. Fauci, and embracing anti-science. I think it would save a lot of lives if Trump were to vanish from the scene right now, but that doesn't seem likely.
