  1. It seems like every time the US gets involved in an extended war, mission creep becomes inevitable. We tried to do too much here as well, investing ourselves in the nation's women's issues, for example. I don't agree though that the money was completely wasted. With time, perhaps they will come around just like Vietnam did. We're almost certainly leaving the country in a better condition than we found it. If things fall apart, that's on the Taliban.
  2. That would have been more of a true to sci-fi ending, I'd say. Leave the audience with something to think about.
  3. U.S. government sends hundreds of ventilators to Florida as Covid surge continues Will Governor DoomSantis ban these, I wonder? That wouldn't seem logical, but you can never underestimate Trumps' Cult of Stupidity.
  4. That, and it was the Krippin Virus, not a vaccine. Idjits.
  5. In terms of competitiveness, I typically see the MLS ranked around 20st/21nd. For average attendance, they have reached 8th in the world. At least as of 2019. Positionally, I think they are still in the first generation of academy players. Some good players have emerged, but no superstars yet.
  6. The (huge) drawback of that "tactical sophistication" is that very little actual game time is spent in live action. The American football coaching staff typically gets half a minute to plan a few seconds of action. The net result is that the game lasts for three hours while only 18 minutes are spent in actual play. Fans are paying big money to sit on their hands while players just stand around. For this reason I no longer watch American Football very much because the majority of the time is spent showing replays and ads. Its boring. Soccer, on the other hand, is usually much more active. There are tactical subtleties to the game, but you have to follow it for a while to notice them.
  7. Common tapeworm drugs may provide new COVID-19 treatment -- salicylanilide 11
  8. Hospitals are generally considered essential services in the US, so I'm not sure what you're on about.
  9. Yep, that is one of the potential tipping points the scientists have long been concerned about. In terms of risk, it probably ranks up there with a regional nuclear war or a Yellowstone caldera explosion. Perhaps not world ending, but pretty calamitous for everybody.
  10. 90 of 91 Seahawk players are vaccinated.
  11. I wouldn't mind seeing an effort at extending the longest continual human presence in space by adding new modules to the ISS, then later detaching some of those to start a new station. There's no reason it can't continue that way indefinitely, if only for historical prestige reasons.
  12. The precedent here is that the pandemic was declared a national emergency by Trump. That allows measures to be taken that would normally be unacceptable. What's unclear to me is when does the emergency end?
  13. The outbreak is accelerating in Florida. They reported over 21K new cases in one day; 100k in a week. For comparison, my state of Washington has had a total of 475K cases for the entire pandemic. 8,800 patients were hospitalized last week.
  14. It's the start of a B sci-fi movie called, "The Russian Module". Dun-dun-duuunnn...
  15. 60% of astronauts test positive for active herpes virus in space
  16. Not quite. What fades are the antibodies. You presumably still get the long-lasting B- and T-cell memory so your body knows how to fight the infection. Anyway, this belongs in the COVID-19 thread.
  17. Rare Snowfall in Tropical Brazil
  18. The Swedish women's football team is looking very good. The US side seems... out of form. I've rarely seen their passing be so sloppy.
  19. An Outbreak Of The Coronavirus Delta Variant Has Spread To 15 Chinese Cities Now we may see how efficacious (or not) the Sinovac and Sinopharm will prove to be. Then again they'll probably just hide the data.
  20. Not to quibble, but I'd imagine that four-wheel drive is useful while driving on sand.
  21. Lrrr of Omicron Persei 8 approves of this choice, and will not blow up the planet after all.
