Got bored and have no new games at the moment...
Slowtrain replied to Arkan's topic in Computer and Console
The reason I still play a lot of ugly games is that no developer has given me games that are that much fun with better graphics. I like awezome graphics as much as the next person, but ultimately its the gameplay that makes a game a keeper. -
The first comment in that story links to another story claiming this isn't true. Let's hope not.

That happens to me a lot too. You would be surprised at how many folks read your posts here but don't say anything. I used to lurk a lot and read folks posts without responding. EDIT: Sorry, a bit out of it. I'm playing WoW with friends and Call of Cthulu alone. Wrath's thread inspired me. Do you remember what prompted you to go from lurking to posting? You certainly don't seem particularly reticent in speaking your mind and your posts are well thought out.

I've tried about 5 times to read the first book in the series. Never made it past the first 200 pages or so. I know a lot of people like it and think is the top of the line fantasy epic of the day (which is why I've tried 5 times to read it), but it just doesn't do anything for me.

Sure. But if a moviegoer thinks the film is crap because it strayed from the source material and the moviegoer happened to really love that source material, then they have every right to criticize the film for straying from the source material. I'm not saying that movies should or should not stray from the source material. That's the director/producer/writer's call to make. I'm just saying that critizing them for doing so is perfectly valid if one feels they made a bad film by doing so.

So they are remaking Conan now. Not only that, the new Conan is being played by an Austrian bodybuilder who onece played Arnold in a biopic. And looks just like Arnold! So the new Conan is being played by a guy who looks so much like Arnold that he once played Arnold so now he is playing Arnold playng Conan in a remake of Arnold playing Conan who looked just like the new Conan! hahahaha.

This game can't possibly be worse than Oblivion. SO bring it on! Can't wait. edit: Actually, I can wait. But I'm sure I'll enjoy it well enough for what it is. Same as I did with Fallout 3.

If you are looking for space opera type stuff then you can try Iain M Banks He's a pretty good writer both as a mainstream novelist and as an SF novelist. Don't go in expecting Star Wars type Space Opera though. Its a lot more dense then that. For more general fantasy there is Lucius Shepard. He does some SF as well, though not so much space opera. Again, like Banks he's a fairly complex writer and I wouldn't consdeir hsi stuff light escapist fair. My fave thing by him is his novel Life During Wartime

z'actly. i feel like it got "fun game!" down pat but i feel like it missed "Fallout" by a thousand light years (is that a lot? i mean for it to be a lot). I would even say that, regardless of i's state as a "Fallout" game, if Bethie had put just some more time into follow through and development of some of the ideas in the game and worked to make the gameworld somewhat more consistent it culd have been a great game. But as it stands now, a fun game but ultimately pretty disposable.

I've read books from all 3 series. Last one is head and shoulders above everything else Cook has done. It is currently the only multi-volume fantasy work that I find readable. And its more than readable. It's really good.

Let's create the worst fantasy setting ever.
Slowtrain replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Way Off-Topic
We will need a talking sword and some sort of traveling gypsy folk that wear bright colors and ride around in wagons filled with pots. -
I hear what you are saying and I agree with you. The problem is that SO MANY aspects of FO3 were neither internally consistent or cohesive, that it didn't matter if GNR took me out of the setting because I already was. FO3 was a lark. Just run around and shoot things and find stuff. In that sense it was fun enough.
-
Almost nothing in FO3 made sense. It was all just there. Regardless, Three DOg and GNR was the best and most intersting aspect of the entire game for me.
-
FO3 is 80% shooter and 20% crpg. Maybe 10%. Maybe 5% Anyway, so yes, more player skill less character skill. Far less clunky. Playing FPS combat in Fallout 3 feels like taking a broken down jalopy out for a drive. Sure it gets you there, but its hardly enjoyable. If VATS didn't completely suck, I might not care so much. But VATS does completely suck. So. Actually, I don't really care at all. It would just be my preference.

Sounds pretty cool. Might check it out.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. DX did it well. Again, I'd prefer neither damage nor accuracy tied to stats, but that's not going to happen.
-
I agree that it does look sillier in a fully realized 3d environment from an Action game perspective, but damn it this is Fallout and any step towards making it play like a fallout game is worth its weight in gold. *raises lighter into the air* It's pretty obvious at this point that we're never going to see an isometric TB one again so I'm willing to forgo the cigar as long as it gets as close as possible I'm not opposed to tying accuracy to skill. Its a pretty traditional way of doing it. It just feels a little clunky to me in some games. FO3 being one of them. Ideally, I'd prefer that neither damage nor accuracy be tied to a skill number in a game like FO3. But if not, then what is the point of the skill number? I suopose you could create some gun handling variables such as reload speed and weapon raise speed and focus speed and tie them all into a skill. Probably that makes more sense really, but who is going to bother when it is so much easier just to tie it to accuracy and damage. Also, thanks for the formula stuff. Just out of curiosity do you happen to know if npcs in Fallout 3 have seperate skills for weapon usage similar to the pc? For example if a raider is carrying a hunting rifle, but then picks up a laser rifle that gets dropped by a dead Outcast, does the raider use a different skill number when firing the laser rifle than he did when using the hunting rifle?

Wasn't stealth a little bugged in IWD? Haven't played it in a long time, but I seem to remember that. -
if you have skill numbers in a game they have to affect either sccuracy or damage. What else is there? In a first person action game, I would prefer the skills affect damage only, since to me it just feels clunky when you are aiming right at something and keep missing it. That kind of thing (forced misses) works better in a isometric/overhead kind of game. If you have to do it, the variable crosshairs such as in DX is a better way of tying accuracy to skill in a first person action game. It requires a HUD of some sort of course, which might make it a little weird in some game settings.
-
That's awesome. Is armor not factored into gun damage? What is the Damage Multiplier variable? How is the weapon condition varaible derived? Is it a percentage of the weapons's current condition? (Ie a weapon at 50% condition has a value of .5 for a gun condition penalty)
-
Make enemy shots do 2x damage when the player is in VATS or while AP's are recharging. There needs to be some penalty for using VATS. Right now, its just game supported cheat key.
-
Neither did I, tbch. Maybe somebody should check and make sure there isn't an alien pod in Josh's office.
-
I used to work in a place where people talked like this all the time.

You guys should post screenies from your games. Especially if something terrible happens that we can all laugh at. We can turn it from an LP thread to a thread of general Jag 2 awesomness.

My evil plans of world domination through Jag 2 begin to ripen. heheheh
