How can Obsidian revolutionize RPG gaming
Spook replied to Craftsman's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Obsidian could revolutionize CRPG games by letting our choices have an affect on the story, and get of the railroading story lines that are so common, while still make a good story. That would give great replayability. -
Lucas Arts... A Lucas Art stright-jacket, to stop any original ideas could be a problem. But considering that horrible holiday special that did a long time ago and Episode one, I find it hard to imagine what anyone could do that would tarnish SW any more then those two. But one can never understand the minds of people in power.

I dubt that a soldier got his skill with weapons from selling flowers. He lives by his weapon skills or he would be another profession like scout. He would definitly not reach that skill in weapon from repairing spaceships or bandageing people. In short a soldier live with skill of arms, no matter if he is soldier, mercenary, dualist or legbraker for a hutt. Each profession gives your earlier education and choice of type of profession. Even if the way you earn your living might be a bit different then the average member of your profession, you will be bound by its general way of traing. You might on the otherhand have very different reason to why you started your path of profession, so one soldier is therefor not the same as next even if they are walking fighting machines (unless they left after recieving the traing and started to sell flowers, while remaining lvl 1 ).

hmm. do all protocol droids have to be gay like threpio? and when i crash my x-wing, can i fix my astromech droid to use his side rockets to get to dry land instead of falling in the bloody swamp and getting eaten? Well, first I think that you add a personality modul to give the personality of the droid. Guess you should be able to put a wardroid personality modul in a protocol droid, though it might not be very longlived when it insults and try to intimidate everybody it talks to (in a very ungay way). Second, why shoot the astromech to land? Add a grappling hook on it and a very strong wire to it. Then you can start fishing. And one of those fishes will keep you feed for weeks.

Just say 'no' to Johnny Quest villains!
Spook replied to Ivan the Terrible's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Those that have fallen to the dark side should follow the me-first-obey-or-die type, but the common soldier should not all be of that moled. Most of them probably joined up to be on the winning side or just to be safe. They don't need to actualy agree with any of the Sith philosophy at all, but might just want to survive. The lower ranks of the "dark-minions" need to be more "human" and deverse in behavior then the steriotypical stormtrooper/officer that we could see in KotOR. This is needed for roleplaying reason if nothing else, so that it might be a reason to do thing another way then just wade in and kill everything that moves (which is not the Jedi philosophy by the way) that you commonly see in games. -
The best thing about KotOR was...
Spook replied to The Situationist's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Epic fealing as my armada moved out to squash that little republic...... Ops, I mean the nice ending when everybody was happy and gave medal to a redeamed Raven. I liked the epic feeling that captured a lot of the first movie. Please don't try to capture the feeling from episode 1. -
More options is good. But make sure that romanse is not broken because of some sidequest. It should continue to develop even during sidequests. And make sure it can lead somewhere even if it is just a declaration of eternal love.

Nope, it is not ALWAYS bad, just must of the time.

Comment after reading KOTOR 2 exclusive, Devs read
Spook replied to Fearless_Jedi's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Almost all Massive Multiplayer Online games are Powergamer games, not Roleplaying games. -
Plin is obviously trolling, so how about we just ignore him and keep up the discussion? Just a suggestion though. If Plin start to discuss instead of insulting paople we could start commenting on his ideas, whatever they may be.

The differences between KOTOR/KOTOR 2
Spook replied to Craftsman's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
How does that match the power of the light side Jedi to look like geeks. -
I have to agree that some of those dialogues is unnessisary with the graphic of today, but that does not mean that they could not enter large dialogue trees for thoose that like a lot of dialogue in that game. They should just make sure it is optional, and that you can get thought the game without it if you want to. In Torment, which I liked a lot, it was more or less mandantory if you wanted to get anywhere.

And darkside get new goodlooking dark clothing, while the light side still will be allowed to look like geeks. -
I think that unless laws of probability has changed a lot you can be quite sure the game is rigged.

What elements of gaming should KOTOR2 be known for
Spook replied to Craftsman's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
There should have been an option for: Story/character, replayability and lenght. As it was I had to have an agonizing choice between replayability and Story/Character. And I had to settle with story since without it there would be no replayability anyway. -
There is always room for a lot of dialogues, if you seek them out. Though you should always have the option to tell the NPC, that you are talking to, to go to hell and leave you alone.
-
No. It is worse. The battle meditation crap Bastila has really has no place in SW universe and the only interesting part of the plot is the attack of the Leviathan. Well, technically Battle meditation have been mentioned in the SW books, and hence have a place in the SW games. But only like a game plot item, since it should not affect the normal game. I think they used it rather well in KotOR, but it is rare so we should not see it in next game.

I hope the devs don't do the tacky, predictible
Spook replied to Joren DarkStar's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I thought Sith was a bit of a reoccuring problem. Like every now and then someone decided to get more personal power and went for that Sith teaching. Anyway, I dubt that they will not have a very tacky appearance of Raven. It can not be anything but tacky, since Raven probably will not look like your Raven did in KotOR. They should just leave everybody from KotOR out of the game. A new beginning and a new crew. B) -
Basicly Pazaak suck!!!! A game which only your character never play the bank, while all oponents always are the bank. There should have been a random element who started, after which you take turns to start playing the card. The turret game I did not mind very much, since it was easy. But looking on the forum I noticed that there was a lot of players that had problem with it. I realy don't think that players skill should determine if you can get to next part in a CRPG. It should always be the PC's skill that determine that. I do agree with those that think we should been allowed to upgrade the swoop if there is to be swoop race in the game. But it should been optional to go though the race in the game, even though it was so easy it was hard not to win. They should have placed an optional way to free Bastil.
-
I have to agree with those wishing that we could play something else then Jedi. It would give the game better replay-ability. They should also have limited choices of races to choose from, and Wookie would not be much of a problem if you pick up a NPC in the beginning that can translate for you (and even add in a few "it is not wise to upset a wookie" if you want to intimidate people ). Having a slightly different story to enter the mainstory, depending on your choice of profession, would be nice as well. The side quests should also be different depending on what profession you have. Well one can always wish, right?

Thats going to happen in TB too if the AI is that bad. It happened in FO and FO2 if you recall. The only way to solve it was to take away the NPC's burst weapons. Well you can do that in RT too. Thats why there is invariably a pause function either state dependent and or something large and easy to press like a space bar. The whole character stats and skills arguement is flawed. It simply replaces one type of player ability with another. I'm much better than the average person at tactical combat games for the simple reason I am me. As long as you limit either player tactical ability or player reflexes to a reasonable level thats the best you are going to get. Actualy you can take care of that problem with distance between NPC and yourself, as well as sneaking and taking out risky tagets before any accidents. When you do that it becomes much less risky to allow NPC just behind you automatic weapons. It's all tactics to overcome stupid AI. I rather think that the Pause is there since they don't use TB, and nobody can always have time to give all orders needed as well as might need to go afk from time to time. It is just a solution to stop RT from getting really messed up. I see no flaw in stats and skill argument. It is the character that is supposed to be the "fighter", and not the player. That someone is somewhat different in thinking solutions to tactical problem is somewhat needed to be allowed in the game since it is CRPG...RP means roleplying, and hence you are supposed to let the character do whatever you think the character should do. It is not CLSRPG (a new word is invented , and it means Computer Live Simulation Role Playing Game ). If you make a hack and slash game with twitch, I can accept that game and actualy booth play it and enjoy it as a hack and slash action game (like Diablo). I would not enjoy it as a RPG game. -

Spook replied to Macolio's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Well, that's a different thing entirely. Just get some okay AI, or tell them what to do yourself (using teh magicz0rz of "pause") Whee, we are thinking....not. If it was optional to get a good AI in the game I'm quite sure most players would get the good one for NPC control. Sadly that is not the case. And the pause don't allow you to control AI controlled NPC, it only allows you the luxery to have a nervous brakedown while the game is paused seeing that you are about to get gunned down by friendly fire. TB allow better control where to place yourself and alow you to take out Risky targets before the NPC gun down friend and foe alike. Always used that option with success in FO once I understod how little the NPC cared about each other when I told them not to fire on me. This assuming FO-like AI controlled NPC. if you can't "twitch it" enough to hit the spacebar a few times in a fight, how long did it take to write your last post? An hour or two? Hitting the pause button once in a while can hardly be called "twitch -
What's with developers' obsession with D&D?
Spook replied to Macolio's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Sure I have, and used in FOT, but if we are not given full controll of characters, like in FO2, team members will still be masacred by uncaring AS (artifical stupidity) controlled NPC team members. If it is real time and and you have to switch between all characters to set up called shots, move to better fireing position and other needed actions you will lose some control and it is twitch of players that decide if you handle a fight well or go down. It should always be the characters stat and skills that decide if a fight is successfull, and never the player's twitch uberness. -

Spook replied to Macolio's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Any system that uses big automatic weapon like bozaar/minigun should use TB. It is to damaging for the team members otherwise. Guess one could do that move each character a little bit in turn, and repeat, but I did not find that very funny in FOT. Good thing they had a half-functioning TB at least (though it did not work properly). I get nightmares thinking of Marcus with a bozaar in RT.
