Even if it makes you cry?

Let's meet in there sometime! I'll send you a message when I get to it (in a week or two after exams )

The dark magic is not having anything else to play that doesn't cost money.
-
Age of Conan it is then.

That happens a lot in this forum. Aahahahahahhaha *did

No, it was beautiful, had some interesting and more mature players that I imagine roam some of the more popular games. I played on an RP PVP server, which of course helped in regards to maturity. But while the community and the setting was extremely nice the gameplay was just sorta lacking, I completely lost interest in leveling because the grinding was so horrible. But I hate mmos exactly for that so call me jaded. Yup, AoC was a bright beacon of potential in the post-WoW world, but the developer/publisher dropped the ball on endgame content and post-release support basically killing AoC a few months in. I've just read it got 300000 new subs since going F2P. Maybe there is hope yet. Which should I drop into, WH Online or Age of Conan as both are free now?

The horror.

I'm not seeing a problem there, the man didn't ask for an opinion and he got it. He got others as well so he has more advice to help him make up his mind.

I agree with a lot of what you said, I think we're sore about different issues. You're sore about dumbing down and needless tinkering, and I'm sore about the action RPG and MMO's (which have similar gameplay) as a genre. I resent their success because I see it as another nail in the coffin of the traditional RPG and a triumph of mediocrity over quality (and yes, I know its not exactly that black and white).

^^ I have Deus Ex and Baldur's Gate II installed on every computer I own. Always. Okay, I'll own up to BGII and Alpha Centauri. Well see there, I played PT multiple times and I'd say that game offers something you won't get anywhere else, hence I'd always recommend it. To everyone. At great length. Or at least for as long as I can get them to listen. With Deus Ex I was under the impression I was playing a once great but dated game. I really like Blade Runner and cyberpunk and I was perhaps expecting a deeper, more meaningful story. Deus Ex is more the Neuromancer side of things. In fact its basically as close to Neuromancer as you can get. The fact is I barely remember it now, a few visuals and nothing about the story so that says something in itself.

Well I hate them for that too, so I guess Conan is not for me, but I'm curious how they are going to offer a modern city RPG because there are so many things that could stand out and break immersion... And they are promising less grindy gameplay, removing classes and levels in favor of a skill based system etc.

**** you Bioware!

No, you'll only be left scratching your head at what everyone's drooling about like I was. It was a great game at the time supposedly but it hasn't exactly aged gracefully (early 3d graphics ftw). Just play the new one.

I considered playing Age of Conan for a while but was turned off by all the bad rep the game got. Was it as bad as they say?

You make the mistake of thinking I'm proposing a radically different Diablo sequel when I was merely pointing out that ten years later here we are, still playing the same garbage - only in HD. The PC has like five decent titles per year and four of them are HD remakes of whatever semi decent 90s/early 00s titles the suits managed to dredge up. I have no patience for grind and heavy repetition in my games, dumping time into self serving game mechanics (replacing your +5 sword with a +6 one, two more points to dexterity, blah blah) is (no longer) my idea of fun - narration and getting to a point (as in telling a well rounded tale, ) - is. Thats why I liked the Witcher. It may have had portions with grind, but at least it killed the randomized loot and tried to focus on the story.

If you look at other genres most of them have gone through a lot of changes - FPS is a good example. Back in the day we had Doom, but from then on a lot of things happened, like Half Life, System Shock 2 or whatever. Diablo is a dressed up gauntlet, and gauntlet is an arcade game, basically "Doom" in the RPG world. If you like that that's fine, but for me its lame in the day and age when RPG games offer coherent storylines, involving quests, sometimes diverse gameplay and the like. It basically takes the worst, most mundane aspect of role playing games, the mechanical grind and progression and makes it the sole virtue of its gameplay.

Hey peeps, what's the general opinion on the upcoming: http://www.thesecretworld.com I really like the premise...

And this, folks, is called cutting off your nose to spite your face. Yeah, I'm like that. Probably a good thing, saved me 50 bucks there.

Still no news from Relic. Since its not likely to be Homeworld 3 here's me hoping for an eastern front Company of Heroes 2.

I still haven't heard from the courier service that was supposed to bring Starcraft 2 around yesterday , and I really won't put up with that, so I cancelled my order. Of course the loss is on the web shop's part but its their fault for using an undependable service to deliver their goods. That was probably the last copy of SC2 in the city so I'll just have to wait until a new shipment arrives, which will be god knows when. Ordering from outside of Serbia is out of the question as customs will rip me off for at least 30% of the original price. ****!

Depends on who you are, I joined in beta and saw the stuff myself, but wasn't interested to follow it on the forums prior to the beta, so I can't really answer that question.
-
True but Starcraft 2 did actually bring many necessary improvements to a very old game, and it has yet to be seen what Diablo 3 will bring to what's essentially a very stale genre. Oh? I'm all ears. 1. flexible unit selection 2. matchmaking (and everything else available at battle.net) 3. improved use of terrain 4. even more diversification among races 5. the spectating system that makes it easier to learn new tactics 6. improved unit AI And that's just off the top of my head.
-
Its stale because isometric action role playing games haven't changed a single thing since Diablo 2 was released, except backdrops and superficial, cosmetic differences. Maybe some people are happy with this, I dunno. I consider them obsolete in terms of gameplay, like adventure games (which can at least vary the stories and challenges). There were plenty of great RTS games since Starcraft just none among those that chose to clone its three race approach. Age of Empires 2, Homeworld, Dawn of War etc.

He's nailed the aesthetics (not that hard considering he partly invented them), but the CGI is looking very thin and dated. Fake? Ah indeed, I recognize the scene with Fassbinder from the new X-Men. Dunno where they scrapped the rest from.
