A River Runs Through It was the single worst assigned book I read in high school. I had a student teacher from Montana for English my junior year and she thought it was a good representation of the Montana experience. Pretty sure it backfired on her. Then again, I really enjoyed Shane --8th grade assignment, about a mysterious stranger meticulously dressed in black helping homesteaders in 1880's Wyoming. Written as a memoir from the point of view of a child, since grown up. Better than the excellent Alan Ladd -Jack Palance film.
