  1. interestingly, i don't think there is any scientific reason this is not, or can not, be true. there is no supporting evidence for such a concept, however, and certainly it is an untestable hypothesis at the moment. perhaps in the future, eh? taks
  2. they are. they are not intentionally part of any legal reason for punishing criminals, at least not in any developed country, nor are they part of any definition of justice, period. because the freaking word has a real-world definition, and none of rostere's points fit into that definition. that you choose to call it some social construct is immaterial, and rather silly. you can't redefine words simply because you don't like the way they work. taks
  3. and, for the record, rostere did not say justice incorporated those three points, he said it was defined by those three points. taks
  4. look up the definition of justice. it does not intentionally incorporate any of the three things rostere pointed out. there is a reason words have definitions: it is so people can communicate ideas using common language. besides, i already noted that some of those things are byproducts of justice. taks
  5. oh, and for the record, the only legal and legitimate reason to punish someone is justice. quite frankly, the three reasons rostere pointed out are all nonsense to begin with. rehabilitation is the result of some liberal fantasy that people committing crimes can be "cured" of such behavior in the future. even on the off assumption that maybe a small percentage of people convicted of crimes do rehabilitate in some fashion, that's not why they were put there in the first place, it is simply something people hoped would happen while the criminals were being punished. making an example out of someone is barbaric and draconian. it is purely revenge, and has no place in justice. we gave that up when we stopped putting people in stocks. preventing them from committing future crimes is, well, silly. the only way this can work in the first place is if they are put away for life or put to death. the only time such a point is even considered is when the original crime is so heinous people are actually afraid to put the criminal back on the streets, which sort of brings us back to the whole justice angle: if the crime was that heinous, the debt owed is large enough that life or death sentences are likely mandated anyway. taks
  6. nonsense. justice has nothing to do with the three points you made. justice is justice. it is paying a debt you owe to society for violating a law that the society has agreed to abide by. justice has nothing to do with rehabilitation, nor making an example out of someone, nor preventing someone from committing further crime. these three things, while potentially accomplished in the act of serving justice, do not in any way define justice. i said nothing of the sort. i replied that justice is a 4th reason to punish someone - that has nothing to do with the situation at hand. get your facts straight and please quit misattributing my statements. clearly you did not understand what i said nor do you understand the concept of justice. taks
  7. whoa, whoa! slow down there partner! no need to make so many rash decisions all at once. early to bed with plenty of booze would be sufficient for proving your point, whatever that may be... taks
  8. hehe, but i'm married, too! that's why michele and i stopped playing on the same pool team. does having a dream and then subsequent fear of walsausages count as something inexplicable? taks
  9. *yawn* just got done with a tasty nap. my head is still foggy, but i'll live. gotta get the squirt from day care soon. pool tonight, but i would rather be camping. yay. taks
  10. ouch... you're right, that is strange. and by eery coincidence, that was the year i got married. what really puzzles me, however, is that it has only been 10 years for me (our 10th anniversary is in septemer). your time and my time are passing differently! sorry, couldn't resist... taks
  11. i always install totsc, and even before i begin those quests, i've usually blown the 161,000 cap (i remove the cap). at that point it gets to where you aren't going to level up anymore in BG1 because there just isn't much more exp. to be had. in other words, once you get the levels from around 161,000, that's about as easy as you can make it without cheating. i think the fighter types go up again at 250,000, however. taks
  12. i think you'll note that the big names he gets are always past big names, not really headliners any longer. sure, some of them have resurgences after boll flicks, but not because of boll flicks. taks
  13. i shouldn't have to hold down the right mouse button for mouse look. just a pain in the ass, that's all. i don't see that as a control issue, rather, that's a screwup in the way they portrayed indoor areas graphically - and yes, it is sort of sucky. i'm more concerned about getting the right position to look at the scene, which a regular run of the mill mouse look would provide (like, a checkbox or something in the controls). of course, if i can move it to the right position (one i'm used to), then spin around, i'll be happy. taks
  14. ah, yes, i didn't even consider the OC thing. there are SOME differences between different parts, though not in construction. most manufacturers bin their parts based on performance so the ones that get rated higher, performed better during in-house testing. the reason for a reduced rating could be something simple, like a one-bit error on a bus after a billion transfers, but it is enough for QC to rate a part differently. i do not know how they perform their testing though i'm sure you can find out in many locations (hardocp comes to mind). taks
  15. i'd argue incompetence... well, with the displayed incompetence, the result was logical. taks
  16. oh great... you deal with love lost by resorting to a sausage-fest? something just doesn't sound right about that... taks
  17. i take it you guys are technically illiterate enough that you don't want to undertake your own build? i build my own not for the cost savings, btw, which can be significant if you do your research, but simply because it is fun to do. no, btw, the 400 MHz clock difference won't make a noticeable difference in your performance. if you are developing some real-time code and you're inserting inlined, vectorized assembly commands to use every cycle of the CPU, then yes, there will be a difference, but not many people are doing that kind of work. taks
  18. it seems you are also regressing grammatically. i predict grunts and groans within a few weeks. i'm not surprised, i always thought you'd head down this path, walsh, just not this quickly. it's ok, there are support groups i'm sure. there's always geico commercials, too. taks
  19. ah, thanks. insufferable indeed. i guess it's good they put it in such a gawdawful default because otherwise i would not have complained, and would have just limped along annoyed. i don't have any issues with the NWN2 camera other than the way it deals with occlusions (or rather, doesn't deal). just put it in the proper mode and all is well. taks
  20. yeah, but aren't there two really big ones that point toward each other in the middle of the stage, and the rest point out or something? i remember it knocked me back into my seat at the kiel auditorium (rather small, only 10000 seats, set up like an enclosed amphitheater). taks
  21. i downloaded the drakensang demo. is there no way to implement a mouse look? am i stuck in the level (with the ground) view permanently? that makes control of your character very difficult. i won't buy it if this is true. taks
  22. as far as i know, yes, but i don't remember the last time i saw them, either (may have been prior to 1995). at any rate, they stopped having rock concerts in the st. louis arena (formerly the checkerdome) after a particularly rough AC/DC concert - the cannons shook the roof, exacerbating fears that it could fall in. they then moved them all to the kiel auditorium after that (i think the kiel concert was my first AC/DC concert). someone finally determined that the arena was not going to collapse and AC/DC was the first rock concert to return, fittingly. i went to that one as well. taks
