Borderlands
Yeah, the interwebs are pretty much a mess, it's a miracle that anything gets through as fast as it does. Lots of redundancy, though

Borderlands
I usually filter for <100ms, but that's pretty good for all the way from Australia. It would suck if Borderlands had a matchmaking system instead of a server browser, though. The lag goes pretty wild with matchmaking, even when connecting to local-ish servers.

Dragon Age
People are arguing that the whole dialog system was also a gameplay mechanic, which is why it might be a bad example.

Borderlands
You're still in Australia, right? That 100Mb isn't going to help much with lag when playing with people in NA or Europe.

Dragon Age
Exactly. I'm surprised that Purkake had to resort to Torment when point-and-click adventures are a much better example of games with no combat whatsoever and a strong focus on story. Still, those games have their own gameplay mechanics, and those must be good enough so that puzzles are fun to solve. My point was that a game can still be an enjoyable experience despite repetitive and lackluster gameplay, be it combat, platforming, puzzle solving or whatever else. As an example I put forth Prince of Persia, Torment might have indeed been a bad example. Do you disagree?

Dragon Age
I still don't get the OMG factor. It's not like they haven't used models for video game characters before...
-
Dragon Age
What do you find surprising? That they used real life models to make the characters? Doesn't really seem all that WTH-worthy to me...

A reminder about upcoming games
Umm, that's pretty much the whole "big deal" with the Ultimate Sith Edition. I wouldn't have brought it up otherwise.

Borderlands
Yes your character gets saved, like in Diablo and the number of enemies is scaled to the number of players. I don't have a glue about the multiplayer framework, though.

Dragon Age
Well, I liked it. At least it wasn't another . Haters gonna hate etc.

What Are You Playing Now?
A Pentium? Seriously? It's a miracle it ran at all. I remember back in like 2005 when Pentiums sucked hard and AMD walked all over Intel.

Dragon Age
Yeah that one.

Dragon Age
Did you at least see the awesome ending?

Firaxis developing Facebook Civ
...I was kidding. We are talking about Facebook games here. Even Flash games laugh at Facebook games.
-
Dragon Age
Well, my point was that a game can still be enjoyable even if the gameplay isn't all that great(Prince of Persia), which some people seem to disagree with.

Firaxis developing Facebook Civ
I'm sure there will be tough competition from Mafia Wars and Farmville. Facebook truly is the new iPhone of gaming platforms.

Dragon Age
Even though the gameplay was pretty repetitive, I really liked the visuals and the story in PoP. I brought it up because it is pretty much a game you can't lose.
-
Dragon Age
Yes. If you can't lose, you can't very well "win". Uncertainty in the outcome is one of the necessary conditions for something to be a "game". If you remove that, you no longer have a game, it's something else. I don't know why but lately I'm getting this weird idea that game devs in some genres are attempting to minimize the chances of losing as much as possible, while keeping the illusion of challenge -- "excessive" losing can result, as alan points out, in the player giving up on the game, and devs don't want that. Of course, what constitutes "excessive" is up for debate; however if you keep lowering challenge standards, then we'll eventually reach the point where a game without a win button will be deemed "too challenging" by some people that aren't interested in actually playing... they simply want plots and characters spoonfed to them. Why have we seen huge advances in graphics but innovative AI and gameplay design are, for all intents and purposes, stuck? Nah, couldn't be. Better tell my shrink. You're deductive skills are excellent indeed. Have you or Gifter or MC played the new Prince of Persia by any chance? What did you think of it? That's your problem. I play games for GAMEPLAY (who woulda thunk it?) If you are looking for "experiences" in that vein, books are the way to go. Hey, I read books as well! Well, sometimes I do... Different games focus on different things. I play Diablo 2 for the awesome gameplay, I didn't play Planescape: Torment for the gameplay.

What Are You Playing Now?
- World of Goo available for whatever price you think is fair
They made plenty of money on the game already, this is more of a promotional thing to get the game out to more people. So pay what you want, but try the game, it's really great.- MPEG 4 Codec
For me it's always been VLC for video and Winamp for audio.- What Are You Playing Now?
Numpad + and - speed up/slow down gameplay. Didn't you read the manual?- MPEG 4 Codec
The only way I know of is to view the playlist and choose repeat from there. VLC player is pretty much the default light-weight open-source of choice. Kind of like 7-zip and Winamp.- Dragon Age
^How about you play the game and then decide? It's just around the corner now, no need for endless speculation. @Amentep: I wasn't accusing you specifically. - World of Goo available for whatever price you think is fair
