New Kickstarter incoming
C2B replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yea, I can see how that'd work for them really well, a bit more concerned of how it works for me. Uh, isn't the benefit for you that you get more RPGs? I don't see why people are on the fence about this: Obsidian has a long track record of making a specific kind of RPG; it's not like there's a lot of ambiguity about what we're going to get with Eternity. I assume you're here because you like their games, so why wouldn't you be up for another one? I haven't played or finished or liked everything from Obsidian so far. That..... Sure is a sentence. Welcome to everyone else. How does that stop you from getting a general feel on the type of game? -

I understand the sentiment (I hope after Eternity that Obsidian will be able to self finance their independent games), but you have to understand all of the factors here. Developers don't assume as much of the financial risk in making a game, so they don't get nearly as much of the take when a game does well. Even if they do, Obsidian hasn't released a game since the last Kickstarter. The Stick of Truth was delayed. The only money that has gone into Obsidian recently has been from Kickstarter and publishers. They haven't had a product to profit on since Dungeon Siege. They do not get as much of a take. Usually their take is exactly zero dollars. Publishers keep the revenue to themselves with the exception of a maybe bonus. @Halsy Until Obsidian releases Pillars of Eternity and it is actually a big success they CAN'T afford to do it themselves. Their burn rate is too high. Also Obsidian and its employees have been very active on Kickstarter this year pledging to a multitude of projects. Big and small. I don't think you need to take a moral stance here. -

RPS seems to have not posted the last part of the interview today either. Maybe they slipped and got contacted by Obsidian to drag it out? -

Next gen project? I can't help but be intrigued by that...can't wait to find out what it is!! We know only a few things about it. Mainly that it has been signed in December 2012 and it's most likely using Cryengine 3. -

No, they're not. They have a next-gen project going (and probably ramping up production) which most people from tsot will probably transfer to. We also know due to an interview earlier this year that Feargus is still pretty much on the safe side regarding having to sign new projects. Thats still not going to affect PE because they can just shift or hire people. Obsidian is around 130+ people big atm. -

Actually since the EA deal its pretty much just EA. Disney only has the rights for tablet/smarphone game atm if I recall correctly in terms of video games. -
I'm with sensuki, though I don't have as much fear.

C2B replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
No its not *exactly*. Reasons already listed. It's only barely like Doublie Fine's and nothing like InXile's. There's enough reasons even outside of that for them to do it. One very obvious is because they have no idea if PE will be successful enough to sponsor other projects. Initially Obsidian even said no to the idea till InXile showed that it worked well. Edit: Of course I could be wrong, but with the Next-Gen game in development and most of PE's staff being old-time Obsidian employees (I doubt they'd fire Tim or Kaz after it as well) it would be a bit weird if only that was the reason. -

C2B replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
They more or less already do. The situation between InXile and Obs isn't directly comparable since InXile had no other contract and the writers were mostly contract people who didn't work directly for InXile or even on-site. Obsidians original plan was also not to do this. When Torment worked though it became feasible and I imagine with nobody being able to predict Eternity's success making another kickstarter seems like the wise choice to minimize risks. -

Animations like a lot of other things are all still in Alpha Stage at max. Very much work in progress. Just to keep your worries down.^^ -

Also I doubt they will immediately launch it. Torment took a while as well. -

C2B replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It is for one reason Torment It worked. Another reason I can think they're doing it is because they already have things promised like the expansion. So revenue from sales is already going there. Nobody can predict eternity's success and having security in the form of another kickstarter is certainly not a bad thing. -

Yeah that's not exactly true. Most of the people that are working on PE are long time Obsidian employees that aren't going to get fired and they have enough projects running on the side. That wasn't inxiles situation at all. More likely they just didn't want to break the flow and its risk aversion if pe isn't as successful as hoped. -
