  1. Some of these are confirmed by just looking at Glassdoor reviews.(the ones that aren't obviously payed reviews) https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Obsidian-Entertainment-Reviews-E151435.htm
  2. I live in south Florida and currently we're having a development boom, which means that a bunch of liberals are going to develop the area and displace the indigents. Also every company seems very keen on paying way less than the national average. My advice for rednecks is: Hold on to your guns and be ready to use them if someone wants to "develop" your county. I live in sarasota, I heard there will be more jobs because of the tech companies. Not for you and definitely not high paying jobs, why waste money on an entrance level job that could be easily outsourced to a 3d world country. The irony of it all is that ultimately they end up going with freelancers based on the States because they speak the language (shorter development times) and can do the job. Still, get ready for your home to rise up in price because its on a desirable location and some rich **** needs a tenth home. Honestly, I don't think it's going to hit you guys since most of the development centers around south florida, you might see me and a bunch of other hispanics soon if things keep going the way they are down here.

  4. That's great to hear, I genuinely mean that but unfortunately I live in the US. Tis the land of shamelessness and the whole corporate world is a lot like feudalism, it ain't fun to be a serf. We must live in different parts of the US. Do kindly share cause I'm dying to see that American dream I was told.

  6. Please, don't excuse nepotism. IDK how things are run at Obsidian but I seen enough daddy's babies enough to know they will never get the real work experience. There might the odd exception where the kid is actually hard working and putting in the effort but no worker is going to risk pressuring them. There's a world of difference between working for your family and working in your family's company.
  7. I think I'm done with CRPGs and developers inability to come up with a fair combat system for a game that is 90 % combat. It all just reeks of dumb arbitrary rules and I have to do somersaults to enjoy these games. It all gets a bit tiring after a while.
  8. I get the feeling that some missions are just set up to fail. Has anyone successfully finished a defense mission and how?
  9. Don't worry I'm far removed from the actual development and I have managed to keep the worst of it away. Also, i'm now working for a toy company and I can assure you that product development in general is hell. Games actually might have the benefit of die hard fans that will rail against corporate evils, no such thing for the people that make the Peppa toys.
  10. IDK, I feel like with things GlassDoor and Indeed that might be changing. Granted, reviews in those places are anonymous but companies will definitely loot at their culture and management if it starts to impact their image. Sure. The important word here is anonymous. If there is a systemic problem at a company and the GlassDoor ratings consistently say that the same thing is wrong, a company will try to fix it. Also note that companies perform exit interviews. If they consistently hear from departing employees that X is an issue, they will fix X because having a high turnover rate is expensive. Every company cares about turnover rate. I can say that the company I'm currently working for doesn't, they only care when it affects their bottom line. They're more than willing to put people through a perpetual crunch rather than to hire the number of persons necessary in order to properly manage the workload. It has affected different departments and led to many firings and quitting from people that were burn out. It was only when they actually saw the magnitude of the mess they made that they began to amend things a little, and now it seems like they might be going back to what it was before. TL;DR: exit interviews mean squat when the problem is the boss.
  11. I'm not saying it's right or that people shouldn't fight against it. I just don't think that people should be treating Obsidian like they are some sort of monsters when, despite how it's apparently been painted, what they have supposedly done is basically standard practice in a lot of companies. Edit: To be entirely honest, I don't really care one way or the other about the whole thing, I'm just annoyed how this has painted a pall over things when I'm excited for Deadfire releasing in a week. From a public perception standpoint the fact that a company in which you put your faith in turns out to be as ****ed as the rest is a big blow. Suffice it to say that I expected better from Obsidian and this has somewhat tarnished their image in my eyes. As for whether things can be achieved without singling out a company; I lived long enough to know people are not rational but driven by instinct and emotion. The only way that meaningful change can be achieved in this regard is by rabblerousing and I hate mobs.
  12. Like Valmy pointed out, we have to see the issue from Obsidian's perspective as well but still, that sounds extremly hostile to me. Why would they want to revoke his rights to work on any RPG and how is that even possible?! Non-compete clauses are something pretty commonly attempted by companies. If you'll recall the creator of Ark got into trouble over this a couple years ago. Apparently they're not enforcable a lot of places, but it's still a way a company tries to protect itself from getting staff poached by direct competitors. I doubt it was a genuine 'non compete clause' as implied, I'd suspect that if Chris asked out of his contract then the reply was "fine, but you cannot work on RPGs until its term runs out/ time x" which is far more reasonable since an early release is doing Chris a favour so quid pro quo should be expected. He essentially seems to be asking for such favourable treatment while still expecting to have benefits of employment- like medical insurance- maintained which would be rather on the nose. That's why I'm extraordinarily skeptical of Chris's claims being accurate, they're not internally consistent and read far more like an internal rationalisation. To be fair though, the whole thing is like a river flowing around a submerged boulder- you're judging what and where by the ripples rather than seeing it so it's speculation, and may be unfair speculation. But Chris is making it very easy to assume that he was the problem, especially since Obsidian hasn't been publicly contributing to the river at all. The issue of any ownership stake is a lot more murky, but there isn't even enough information to speculate on that, except what no legal action from Chris implies. I make no assumptions about anything one way or the other, and haven't read the interview or any of the Codex thread. I was just pointing out to Katphood that non-compete clauses aren't all that unusual, particularly in situations with talented individuals who are likely to join direct competitors. A lot of the stuff people are saying is "so terrible" seems to be pretty standard parts of the way the business world works. Yes, it sucks, but it's reality. Saying that its common doesn't not make it right, it is in fact an indictment on the whole system as well on the complacency regarding the status quo. I'd rather have angry people railing against it than apathetics that have rolled over and accepted it.
  13. Truly hope makes people a hopeless cause. HR does the company's bidding, but even if you were right it would be disingenuous to ignore the fact that Avellone had a tenuous relationship with Obsidian HR. Or have we forgotten all about the unnamed HR lady that's married to someone in management? It certainly strikes of impropriety considering the circumstances.
  14. WTF? Is Satan managing Obsidian now? There's no guarantee that your former employer has to continue to pay for your health insurance after you depart. Sometimes it ends on your termination date, sometimes maybe it'll ride out to the end of the month. That's why we have laws like COBRA that allow you to continue your insurance on your own dime while you search for a new job or insurance plan. If anything, the criticism should be directed towards America's system of employer-sponsored insurance, than a dig at any one company. It is both standard and terrifying to lose your paycheck and insurance on the same day, but hey, that's the system we've built. Yeah, but using that as a way to get you to sign a deal against your best interest...you would think there would be more consideration for someone that you have worked with for years and has given much to your company. Funny how capitalism reminds a lot of communism, except that power is split between **** instead of consolidated into a big party of ****.

  16. Great, now I haven't noticed a decrease in ammo but I have this paranoid feeling that ammo doesn't replenish.
  17. We tend to look at everything in cm until their height gets to meters, we ignore decimeters and skip to meters.
  18. The game autosaves every time you accept a mission. Quitting usually isn't an option for me because I am always on the verge of bankruptcy whenever I start a mission. Being miserly has worked out well for me, I can cover all of my monthly expenses with just one mission if I forgo loot. But now I got a new ship so lets see how this works out. BTW does anyone know if there are consequences for low morale?
  19. Yeah, that's fair. I acknowledge the general context benefit of DMY, it's more that infographic thinks it's the one true format since it has a cute little pyramid. Well, there's a difference in aesthetic value and functional value. None of which need be intrinsic.
  20. That's dumb, the only reason to have YMD is for documents that will be read by archeologists. MDY makes sense if you're trying to track down a document as they will undoubtedly be stored by year. You go from greater to smaller in a way that its actually functional and not having to look at documents that start with the year of the box you just pulled them off. No duh is the same year; it might seem little but when you're sifting through thousands every little bit helps. I'm confused, sounds like you agree that YMD/MD,Y are the superior formats. Each has its function and should be kept to it. For archiving purposes YMD works best, for information that has a shorter term of relevance MDY, and for everyone else that can't be bothered with corporate or scientific bull**** DMY.

  22. Why the hell do we pay money to both governments then?
  23. Thanks, my backlog just got a wee bit bigger. You sir have the best of tastes. FF VI was my first ever RPG. Edit: if you're into old JRPGs (the best ones IMO) you can try: The Breath of Fire series Secret of Mana 2 and definitively 3 (best one) and Skies of Arcadia. Now get a bunch of emulators and get playing. ReEDit: I forgot, Radiata Stories.
