  1. There is a lack of Norse mythology in games.
  2. She's racists because she takes an stance on protecting humanity from outside influences? She distrusts aliens and with reason. Whether you think she is justified or not is part of what make her interesting. Also Ashley never had a sob story. And some of the other, alien crew members did.
  3. I have to disagree with you there. Her whole shtick was that she was a racist bastard and missed her mother/sister. Her death was blessing on all those poor five races. Talk about missing the point. And she was the character we learn the most about. Kaiden just goes on about Jump Zero and the aliens have half their dialogue used for info kiosk about their species except Garrus, who you have pretty one note convos with. Even if she was racist, that wouldnt make her a badly written character
  4. He was written as insane and violent. The detached voice just made it more so.
  5. What if I want that to happen since its a slap in the face to what everyone expects. And I agree the Bioware is too concerned with production values to put money into writing enough content to satisfy the big choices. Also Ashley is an excellent character.
  6. ASoIaF wouldnt work well as a MMO game, or even an epic RPG. Strategy or small scale RPG, now thats a different story.
  7. HK was more insane and violent in 1. In II he is much more calm and philosophical.
  8. The lines wouldnt have been as memorable without the delivery.
  9. But of course it will take place in FR since its the most popular setting, it has the greatest traction with casual DnD fans and it near the only choice right now. THey should bring back Spelljammers.
  10. More like an impossible dream
  11. Mitsoda described Bloodlines as a serious story yet one where they tell you a **** joke or two along the way. Its usually the stuff outside the plot (email, ads, references) that is really funny. Like arguing witht he stop sign or the Friggin' Chicken ad. And no, WoD isnt like Anne Rice, though one of the clans was modeled after that type of vampire. Resident Evil 5 is b movie horror writing. Too bad its just an action game now.
  12. The people in Fallout 1 and 2 had bigger settlements in less time after the bomb.
  13. Well asset creation costs need to go down and a bigger medium level indie scene need to arise I think. Then again a lot of the most influencial art in history was done at the behest of someone else. At some point I'm hoping there are a enough people in gaming who want something more than to play virtual sports or shoot dudes.
  14. am not disagreeing that bastilla ended shallow... but add some genuine heroic sacrifice and character woulda' been pretty darn good. not require major changes. yeah, she gets the ice-queen shtick, but again, that were part o' the necessary plan in mirroring star wars 4-6. would rather chew broken glass than take another stab at vampire. some ok writing at start, but nothing fantastic and for all the hassles we went through to get through +1 hour o' vampire silliness... *shrug* HA! Good Fun! You sure? I went through recently with the 6.0 patch and I didnt have a single crash playing on Vista. Well you are missing out. Mitsoda is very talented as far as vg writers go. I would have like to see his stuff on AP before it got changed. I wonder if he has found a new company to work at now. As for SoZ, I though of it as more Icewind Dale than a Beth game.
  15. I definitely prefer the strong critical path approach, and I agree that I doubt Obsidian can merge a Planescape/KotOR II esque narrative in a sandbox setting under the time constraints. However, that doesnt mean the story cant be good or meaningful. Lots of well written sidequest covering a variety of themes would be just as good.
  16. What I meant to say is that because we have enough games that have managed a level of writing at least on par with a mostly decent movie, we know bad writing when we see it, even through the colorful smog of graphics and gameplay. We'll probably never see video game writing approach the level of a truly great, meaningful movie, but it's not wrong to at least expect the sort of attention to scriptwriting they put into a decent action movie. Isnt that narrowminded? Like saying movie cant achieve as high as a great book. Things take time. Video games are still pretty new. I always thought direct comparisons between the different mediums was pointless, since they all have different ways of doing things.
  17. Gromnir, I'd suggest playing more of Vampire with the new patch. How far did you get in Santa Moncia? I also suggest playing Malk if you dont care for repeat playthroughs. Its too bad each clan couldnt get dialogue styled after them. Also Bastila? I thought her character ended up shallow and cliched. HK gave a pretty damning indictment of her (and Carth) character in II. I agree with Jolee. He is one of my favorite characters. I found HotU much better than NWN OC or the first expansion.
  18. I think Fallout 3's writng plus how many times I had to suspend disbelief hurt the setting for me. I really liked it at first, but the immersion breaking was too much. It was stuck between FO and FO2 and I guess that just wasnt the setting I wanted. Also the general question of why am I exploring? A lot of the places just ended up being similar hallways filled with similar things in similar buildings. Eventually it was just my OCD for getting 100% that kept me going. In Morrowind the scenery changed like every 10 minutes of walking. In Fallout is was either out of the city, in the city, in the subway, in a building or in a cave, with lots o copypasta textures and assets. What about post BG? I really liked BG writing wise as well. And I like KotOR cause its captured the OT feel. But what about other than that?
  19. Thats what I was getting at, and why I mentioned the art style. Oblivion just look like generic fantasy land I've seen in games and movies a thousand times before. Shivering Isle was still pretty bad, but at least it looked interesting, and I mantain art style is orders of magnitude more important to a game then pretty graphics.
  20. To change subject for a second, Gromnir, what parts of Bioware games, writing wise did you like? Cause I find them entirely to derivative most of the time, especially after BG II, and every attempt they have made at romances are really cringe inducing. So what do you like about them? Or what characters?
  21. I dont know if Morrowind had strong dialogue but I do remember is had strong lore. Its had a world I was interested in exploring. It had life despite not having radiant AI or whatever other buzzwords Oblivion had. I mean, what happened to the art team behind Morrowind? They give that place something words and better graphics couldnt.
  22. Morrowind's writing wasn't bad. On the contrary, it was average to good. What ever happened to the writers on Morrowind? What happened to Peterson?
  23. But would obsidian (not gonna even entertain the idea that beth would do it) do something like that? It sounds great, but also quite complicated for one weapon. And it wouldnt gel with the whole positive reinforcement Beth wants their games to have.
  24. Fallout 3 had a very diverse voice cast: FO3 credits Compare with Oblivion: Oblivion credits Its too bad the headline role was such a dud, and the rest were reading poorly written lines. I really hope the next game doesnt have just one voice for the ghouls. It was so weird.
