I saw that option (and it is more realistic that way) but I think I'll keep it for the next playthrough, since my mercs got through the counterattack alive. Whoever said the drop scales is apparently right, I attacked the middle Drassen area by night, killed about 10 enemies and was rewarded with a WWII era Nazi rifle Still my 90 + marksmanship PC (lvl3 now) decimated the low level goons with it . Thanks for the advice I was curious how realistic the game is as far as shooting distances are concerned so I did some checking up. If one square in the game is roughly 1m (because a doorway takes up one square) then the regular max effective distance of a gun is 10m, however my spec ops encylopedia says a handguns effective range in combat is 30-40m. Okay had the game had to compromise obviously, but the clever thing is that the more or less scaled it down right. SMG' are useful effective for twice that distance, rifles three or more times and so on... As for the rest of the ideas in the game they remind me of Frederick Forsyth's novel "Dogs of War", and since studying these sort of events is my job I was pleasantly surprised as to how realitic the game is (take mines for money, airports for transport, train militia). Sure the time factor doesnt correspond to reality but I would say this is quite realistic, and follows several real life scenarios. Forgive my excitement but this is the first time I'm playing JA2 and I'm thrilled to find it even better than people say. It drives the game I quit playing because of it - Fallout Tactics, right into the ground.

My problem is that I'm not getting any good loot. As you can see from the screen 2 SMG's is all I have - the rest have handguns and their short range is killing me.

I'd agree with your RPG list except FO3 and nwn2. FO3 Fantastic game. As NWN2 just 'playable'? Compared to nwn1 the story was leaps and bounds better plus the eyes candy was x10 better as well. All in all a much better game and far from just 'playable'. NWN2 was better in every way than the first one, it just doesnt say much since the first one was trash. While a lot of effort went into that game I just dont see it in the same club as Torment, MotB, Baldurs Gate etc. Look at it this way, if you wanted to put it among those games what would it have to offer to be considered as exceptional? I couldn't stand Fallout 3, for me it was worse than Oblivion. At least Oblivion makes no attempts to pass itself as intelligent or mature.

One of the hi res mods screwed up my game by making vault elevators unselectable for some reason.

Killed all of them. I think it took me 4-5 hours. I just hope there isnt another attack tomorrow
-
Experienced, which i think is the normal one. I'm managing to bring their numbers down as they run in front of the doorway to the bar or inside it but its going slowly, 20 of them are left. I just hope my bullets dont run out.
-
The question was whether there was an acutal tactical way of going about it apart from the door cheese or running away.
-
More balanced in game mechanics or difficulty? I'm the sort who'll beat them or die trying :D How would an experienced JA2 player beat them in a straight out fight with 5 handgun wielding mercs?
-
I'm trying to cheese my way through it, since a straight on fight is impossible. I;m hiding in a building without windows, waiting for them to show up through the door. I've killed 25 so far this way, but I cant move because they're all outside Uhh right
-
This is insane - I'm playing ja2 1.13and I just liberated Drassen, it was a difficult battle against 15 or so enemies but my handgun wielding mercs finally got them all. I set them to rest and the next morning I'm attacked by 60 assault rifle equipped troops, my mercs are shot up from the day before and outnumbered 15:1. What the hell am I supposed to do?? I tried reloading but the attack is scripted... I read its a mod "improvement"

If it turns into a grind to get to the content then something has gone very wrong, though to be honest RPGs that don't have grindy combat are rare. Infinity engine games had good combat, Torment not included. Temple of Elemental Evil too. So did the Gothic games in their own way though it was grindy. The trick is to dose it right, enough to be entertaining but not so much as to become a chore.

so pissed at Obsidian

Except...you're not a CIA agent. This went right over my head, everywhere I read M.T. is a rookie CIA agent? No, you are not a CIA agent, whereas the OP is a woman. Capice? Also I don't understand why people are ragging on the OP for liking Deus Ex. She made it pretty clear that her beef was with Obsidian whose previous games allowed players to choose female characters. Deus Ex is not an Obsidian game. Her expectation is that AP will be like DX but this time she's sitting it out. That sounds reasonable enough to me. I can also relate to her frustration. It gets tiring playing the same looking character after a while, especially when the character in no way represents you. In an RPG this is even more disappointing because RPGs usually provide an escape from the typical focus group designed everyman. For instance the heroes of Alpha Protocol, Drake's Fortune, Wolfenstein and Shadow Complex all basically look the same. Sometimes I get confused when I see screenshots from these games as to which is which because of this similarity. Sure, in NOLF and BG&E you have to play a female character but guess what? Those games didn't sell particularly well despite raving critical acclaim and being all out awesome. I think A LOT of gamers feel like the OP, but they tend to be white males so this isn't usually an issue for them. Ah, yes well that depends on the way a person role plays. I'm personally pretty much tired of the CIA, the US army and all that goes with it in any media, not just in games. So knowing that the PC of Alpha Protocol is a CIA agent is an instant minus in my book, but I'll play the game anyway. -
The new AI is the pink elephant everyone talks about but no one has actually seen.

What makes you excited about the game?

AP at no 17., not bad!! http://gamers.eurogamer.net/most_anticipated.php -
All their base are belong to us (though it is a Sega Mega Drive quote )
-
That's questionable. Not really, but you're free to try and prove otherwise.

I'll take both. After all BGII had both so its hardly unattainable. Saying one is primarily dedicated to making story based games is a weak excuse to make flimsy gameplay.

I said it five posts ago but you weren't reading them.
-
If fun is subjective then I obviously can see someone having fun with an activity that I don't find fun. I could hardly say its subjective and then deny another subject the ability to have fun. What's wrong with you?
-
You already had the answer 4 posts back - fun is subjective. For the record I have a PS2 as well, so I hardly fall into the glorious PC gaming master race crowd. Which is also rather obvious since Final Fantasy X is in my sig.
-
If you don't care then stop asking stupid questions.
-
Annoying if you repeatedly charged an insta kill magic. The first time he slaughters your party, you already know how to beat him, or rather how not to approach him. I beat him with Edwin shapeshifted via scroll into an adamantium golem, and it was a lot of fun beating the crap out of that flying skull.
-
You missed the point completely. I said it was not the way the FPS were meant to be played and subsequently I cant get fun out of it. So for me the entire experience is stupid, or rather severely lacking.

Well I have a major problem with playing a CIA agent, but I'll wait until the credits roll to judge whether my experience has been negatively impacted by the profession of the main character.I wont go into a flame over it, and judge the game or the devs on the basis of one bad (in my eyes) design choice.
