My GoG version of IWar2 is downloading. I recall trying to play that game twice and quitting. Probably one of the hardest games I ever played, combat wise (and because of the ugly tendency not to tell you most things you need to know in hard 30 minute missions). Basically its an open-world/sandbox universe with a dynamic economy controlled by the AI. X2 is better at this than X3. The universe consists of hundreds of sectors connected by jumpgates. There are 5 sentient races that control their own groups of sectors plus many sectors that are unexplored, uncontrolled, held by pirates, aliens etc and so forth. Every race has stations in each sector that produce a variety of goods from basic energy to food supplies to high level manufactured goods. As a semi-independent you deal with all the races, those who don't hate you that is, and build your own factories, trade goods, protect your investments from attacks etc and so forth. You can choose to fly around in a fast scout fighter, a transport, a heavy carrier and all sorts of other ships, and you'll generally swap off between different ships as you take on different missions etc. Obviously a heavy carrier costs a lot more than a scout fighter, so you have to spend a long time building your infrastrcuture before you can afford one. SO it can be a slow moving game. What's the combat like?

On a completely unrelated note, the only 3D RPG whose art direction was worth a damn was the Witcher. Maybe Bloodlines too. And Gothic 3. 3D tech really took a poop on what an RPG could visually convey, scope wise.

As far as I remember, The Wolourn, often express discontent with just about everything in The Witcher 1. Bad combat, bad story, bad writing, something along those lines. Maybe he still enjoyed the art direction? No, I recall him saying that the art direction is crap. Also, the game wasn't made by Bioware so it sucks by default.

Why doesnt anyone listen to me?! The X games are complete rubbish. The only people who like it are autistic german kids who enjoy making mods that make it EVEN slower. Well, what's wrong with them?

Why always A Clockwork Orange or Fahrenheit 451 on those lists. Classic.. yes, maybe.. not terribly good though. I like most everything else on there. I have a sort of mixed opinion on Kubrick with his exquisite cinematography on one hand and very literal stories on the other (barring Odyssey 2001). To be honest "A clockwork orange" is just another dystopia themed novel out of a hundred such novels in what's really a dead end genre. I put it on the list to give credit where credit is due, as a nicely shot and significant movie but my personal favorite it is not (Tarkovsky is). Kubrick's movies leave me cold.

Played Space Rangers 2.... nice little game. X3 looks great, I'll have to look into it. I remember Starpoint Gemini being slammed by reviewers but not why...

I suppose so. I though the situation was crap years ago and then the Witcher came out and blew me away. /sentimental mode off Now we can go and give Volo a wedgie.

I think I said something of the sort before, and while you're obviously right there is the miserable situation with other game developers to consider. If or when they kick the bucket there won't be a single developer barring Bethesda with serious cash to burn on an RPG. While serious money does not necessarily =good game, there's only so much you can cut before you get a subpar game, especially with RPG's being as expensive and risky as they are. Bioware are worth to me only on the production values they could potentially bring to a hypothetical game I'd want to play. Its a long shot, but its not like I have anything much to expect, barring TW2.

I'm thinking its more the death knell of the DA line (or if it isn't, it should be) rather than the company. A big game company needs a string of crappy titles to really go down. Even so its in EA's interest to keep a prestigious name like Bioware alive, even if its on life support. It pretty much hangs on ME3 and TOR now, and what EA managers think of their sales figures. DA's setting is a creative and artistic flop. I don't care how many cocaine buckets it bought, not everything is in money. But that's just my opinion so whatever. "unoriginal IP's"? You make it sound like they did every IP ever made. No RPG developer has anything in their catalogue even remotely like Fading Suns, while DAs toilet paper fantasy is a dime a dozen.
-
I think the numbers are less relevant compared to the reputation lost with the inferior quality of the game and the various scandals around it. Bioware might be wise to drop the DA line entirely. The engine is outdated garbage, they've managed to split the fan base and selling a potential sequel will be harder than it needed to be. I think the DA universe was an unoriginal flop from the start (unlike ME which at least has some variety and design going for it) and a return to licensed products would be rather refreshing. Fading Suns RPG anyone? The license must be dirt cheap now.

Good. I wanted to love Moon, with its cerebral sci fi approach that just doesn't happen these days but I couldn't. I liked the direction though, so I'm quite interested in Source Code.

I've played Independence War 2 quite a bit. A few years ago I played Spaceforce: Rogue Universe, which had its good points but was in general an average game. Freelancer too... Currently the only thing I have on is the Gemini Gold (privateer remake) Humanoid suggested which seems to play just like Wing Commander Prophecy which I loved quite a bit. That's a good thing, but even with the remake its still a pretty dated game. I think I quit IWar2 halfway through because the mission scripts were bonkers, or because you could easily get into a state where it was unclear what to do next, or how to do it. That game was great but it had a learning curve that was a sheer cliff. @Purkake: well that pretty much kills EVE for me. I'm in it for the adventure, not a second job :D That's about it.
-
I've finished Freelancer, but I haven't played the X-series or Privateer. I'll look into them.... in the meanwhile lets see if there are any more recent games on offer...
-
Well you've seen the title. I've been pining for a space combat/trading/exploration game for a while. Can anybody suggest a game of that type made in the last decade that's worth playing? Also: is EVE online worth getting into at this late point, and what's the combat like in there - I need my twitch dogfighting fix!

Aesthetically pleasing female character designs.

In the adventure genre, it's hard not to find a game without a worthwhile female role. Yes but apart from that? -
Don't worry, another week of that and you'll have plenty of imaginary friends to talk to

Somebody get the Icewind Dale character portraits. -
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Yawn, next. Been refining my sci fi list, a sort of "best of the best" thing that I would recommend to someone with too little time to watch dozens of movies:

That's actually interesting to look at even if her **** are unnecessarily exposed. Got me thinking how games take their cue from movies: they don't really include old/aged/not-so-good-looking people unless they're the bad guy or something. Bad policy if you ask me. I'm really struggling to find a game which has at least one worthwhile female role and that the female in case isn't cookie cutter male fantasy. ... Grace Nakimura from Gabriel Knight springs to mind. She was a completely ordinary woman. -

What's the matter Trebek, not a fan of the ladies are you? The endless parade of firm asses and perfect **** becomes boring after a while. Yes, because if you've got a god body you're automatically in Porn. Totally. I mean if we created an "Aesthetically pleasing Male character designs" thread would you be complaining about having the NFL being posted in there? Or just male porn stars? Its an obvious exaggeration dude, jeez. I was asking if we had anything that isn't in skin tight bodysuits or bikinimail. -
