Stealth in Alpha Protocool
SirPetrakus replied to Stealthguy1986's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I remember way back when I used to play Thief, tat game where you didn't have to kill anybody but the final boss. Sometimes killing a guard would help, but it never was really necessary. This is my idea of a stealth game. Not saying they should make it like Thief, just saying that if you could play it that way if you wanted would be awesome! -

Character/Location ideas for a story
SirPetrakus replied to walkerguy's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
That's true, but I never put much thought on worlds I create or the names of valleys and mountains and cities therein. Make something up on the spot if I have to and move on with the plot. -
I am really looking forward to AP. I don't really care about customizing my chars face on AP, same thing went for Shepard on ME. Most of my friends are die hard shooter fans with pretty graphics and beefed up armored guys that shoot stuff all the ti ... let's just say they really liked GoW. So I showed them the screens on AP and told them what it's about and they pooped their pants. I think that's a sign Obsidian is on a good path with this game and I'm pretty sure they'll deliver. Just take your time and no bugs, guys.

Romantic Interest anyone?

This reminds me; is there a co-op play for Alpha Protocol? We could double team him. Oh God! That thought's giving me hemorrhoids! Unless you're girls, which would be giving my peepee a very tingling feeling. -
Character/Location ideas for a story

So you're gonna pile Arabs as the bad guys in your game. No, I don't think that's racist or biased. Nope. Not at all. Anyways, "dark" names, as you put it should sound more brutal, like something rolling of the mouth of a death metal singer. Gur-Nagash is a name I've used more than once, sounds pretty cool too. Gs should be a little dominant in that language I think. Not saying you should name a city Grrrr or anything, though that could work for Orcs. Don't be hesitant to name ships out of real ships, e.g. Constellation, Enterprise, Dauntless or whatever. You could call it the 50 50 like the ship in Grandia 2. It was called 50 50 because it had a 50 50 chance to make the trip. I would refrain using actual city names to name your cities. Naming your capital New York is kinda so so. Some Greek mountains have good names that could be used in your campaign and sound entirely fictional, like Parnassus, Parnitha, Kissavus etc. A little note, the name Dion, ever so popular in medieval setting, is true, it's taken from the Ancient Greek city of Dion, named after the god Dias or Zeus and it is located at the base of mount Olympus. A few random names to sign off; Maldanion, Eiron, Dendrilion, Kael Matherion, Dorangus, Domokus, Lem Atim, Naornog -

Glad I could help with that, but remember this, different races might have different names for the same thing, or even translated versions because the elves named a mountain as Thsanslanassach and who in God's green earth could pronounce THAT? It's like the gnomish mountain Nevermind from Dragonlance, a name so unfathomably long that the humans just didn't give a damn to learn it. Valen cold be used as a pronoun thus distributing a certain quality or even Dethir could be used like that, e.g. Valen could mean good or calm or lucky and thus use it with other words that would mean wind or surface or flow or whatever, makes for a good random name generator. Kraedenthor sounds dwarven enough if you're looking for anything like that and remember that a lot of dwarves have last names related to their profession, e.g. Flint Fireforge and Bruenor Battlehammer. Naming a dwarf as Klang Warsmith isn't exactly the most inspired solution but it gives you a good name for a character, defines his profession and tells a bit of his lineage and heritage. Laurelion, Theltinin, Faarsgard, Gnimsh, Throlborod, names keep coming, don't think you'll like them all or maybe even much, just things that roll off the tip of my tongue without giving much thought to them at all. Wish you could tell us what you are in most need of so I can think about it more specifically. -
response to interview
SirPetrakus replied to Walsingham's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Wow. So many issues being addressed at the same time I have no idea which one to address first. I'll start with a take on the graphics section. I never was one for high quality graphics and bloom effects and "oooh shinnies!" . Though I do care about the texture quality of a game. If it is sand, it might as well look like it too. I can still play Warcraft 2 and have fun with it and not bitch about the graphics. Fallout, BG, IWD, even FFVII still looking good to me. Not looking like Crysis is not a bad thing for me, I am not that obsessed. That graphics have advanced over the years isn't a bad thing but it isn't everything in a game. If the dialogs and the plot sucks, it's going to the waste basket either way, but there are a lot of gfx whores out there that buy games that should be total flukes just for the graphics. Yes, I am bitching about Crysis and it deserves dirt for once! I played Thief and I liked it too, the stealth elements of the game made it very enjoyable and one of my favorites to this day but, as noted by a fellow poster previously, it would look so much nicer if the game was being released again today with modern day lighting effects and a higher polygon count, but it's the gameplay that actually made the game what it is and despite it being an old game, it would still be fun to play today. About a game's difficulty, I don't have much to say. A game should be able for any man to finish at some difficulty. The Silent Hill games for example would grow more complex riddles at higher difficulty levels thus proving more of a challenge not only by generating stronger opponents but by also making riddles that more perplex, however you could only do the "good endings" as the game's difficulty was set to maximum. I remember playing Toki on the Sega Genesis and that game wasn't that hard as far as the last couple of stages. That game would seriously mess you up! It would only be harder if it asked you to grab trouts with bare bum cheeks! I don't want a game to be insanely difficult, but rather a game that would adapt to my capabilities and grow harder the better I played it or easier the worse I played it. Realism is the victim child of the Matrix generation. The more insane something is the cooler t would be to actually be able to do it. Having a jailbait teen with twin handguns isn't exactly my idea of unrealistic. Kids in Africa are forced to fight since the age of 5, with no offense to people of African descent if tis address raises any hate. The fact that a teen could fight with twin handguns isn't that unreal as it is rather highly unlikely. She could have been trained her whole life to do so for the sole reason that who would suspect a teen girl to be an assassin? Purpose is the reason behind the decision to add such a character in the game's roster, would a Desert Storm veteran with a rocket launcher raise as much doubt? No, but why would a 40 year old man go around carrying such a thing in the first place? Let's not be too quick to judge on something like that. Looking forward to more news on AP, keep up the good work guys! -
Character/Location ideas for a story

It's not easy for one man alone to create of the social-economical-political-geological structure of a whole world on his own. It would help however to share the general cultural setting. Will it be Medieval England as it was done in the 1981 film "Excalibur" or something more gothic, as in the Disciples games? This could set a tone as to what the diplomacy between the races should be like. This requires so much thought it's giving me a headache. -

Romantic Interest anyone?

Hey, man, I said "a guy if that's your thing". It may not be my thing but I don't wanna impose myself on anyone, it should totally be on the player whether Mike will be gay, bisexual, straight or asexual. -

How about naming the alliance as "The Bastion", methinks it has a nice ring to it, I would be all for the "Federation" but, eh, isn't it a bit overused? Valendethir is a nice elven sounding name. Could be used for a river going through an ancient elven forest or such, or anything that could use an elven name. I believe that Human names should sound a bit more real. I don't think it would be bad to name a general as Jaques De Ville or have a street called Hill Street, makes everything look more familiar and easier recognizable, therefore more immersing, don't you think? It is important for players to find Humans as something familiar and as expected of in real life. -

Well, I was really pissed when Franka Potente died, I was like WTF! The option of having a score of women as romantic interests isn't that appealing to me. Well, it sure does add some replayability value, but seriously, how many times am I gonna play it to do all the romances? I'll just wait for someone to make a mod so I can do them all in one go. H4X lol. Anyways, I'd rather have a few romantic options, i.e. more than one but no more than 3-4, I don't want it becoming a harem hentai game, hopefully keeping the number low would mean that the romances will be better in quality than in quantity, I remember the romantic options you had in GTA San Andreas where ... well, makes romancing Elanee from NWN2 look realistic AND IT WAS ONE SENTENCE LONG! -
Franka Potente and Julia Stiles for Bourne, the Bond Girls for Bond, even Jack Bauer has had more than one, will Mike get involved with one? She doesn't even have to survive this whole ordeal, which would make it more dramatic, but surely there must be someone. Or a he, if that's your thing.

New Screenshots :)
SirPetrakus replied to Matthew Rorie's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I too would like to see some game footage, if not for myself, just so I can show something to my friends who appear a bit skeptical on the matter since Obsidian hasn't tried a spy drama in the past and have doubts on how good or bad can they deliver. I've bought KotoR II and NWN2 + MotB, waiting on Mysteries of Westgate and will most definitely buy AP once t comes out, don't wanna ruin a perfect score As for GUI, most games don't offer the same HUD that BG and Fallout had, usually it's just a minimap and some quick buttons but since the screenshots are sometimes taken from cutscenes and scenes where the GUI isn't exactly necessary to make a point, makes sense it's not there. -

T_T Well, maybe if you pointed out something, I could be of better use and FYI, I have actually used those names for characters I played. The DM wasn't exactly pleased ... If you could use some dwarven names or elven names or even gnomish names, yeah, we could probably be of use but we don't know anything, maybe if you asked something more specific? Like naming 3 human cities or 5 mountains or whatever, beats spouting "Groblor, the nasty looking Goblin" as a suggestion. -

Fo sho. Don't you worry, our secret agent can hold his own. Holding his own is one thing, how about quick kills against low lvl enemies? Mike shouldn't have a problem with someone who is trained to just point and shoot or if Mike is overpowering? -

Loved the screenshots, understandably the game is far from completed and therefore a little rough around the edges but the scenery looked beautiful. Never really cared much for cutting edge graphics with mind blowing requirements like, oh, I don't know, Crysis? I'm looking forward to a demo prior to release? pwetty pwease? Anyway, loved the work on this one and looking forward to it soon. -

What are the skills in this game?
SirPetrakus replied to Cycloneman's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I feel compelled to agree with you on that one. Maybe it's a little more similar to the d10 set of skills? Like Bloodlines, or maybe it will be more like Fallout's skill system. -
Bourne, 007, or Bauer
SirPetrakus replied to walkerguy's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Jason Bourne all the way! Less gadgets, more cunning, handling the most unlikely of situations without any back up or equipment and still making it through just using his brain and that's his greatest weapon. Jack Bauer just needs a handgun and get everyone out of his way, pretty much like Chuck Norris but a little downplayed. He's got the government and unlimited resources to back him up, creates scenario loopholes for things that don't make any sense and is generally luckier than anyone else, I guess the Force is strong in that one. James Bond has got gadgets. He's got stuff that do the amazing for him, hardly does any reckon himself and his espionage abilities seem limited to killing people and blowing **** up, he is also as transparent as bottle of mineral water. Don't get me wrong, I like James Bond and Jack Bauer, but I find the well played story of the Bourne films over any James Bond film or season of 24, he's just plain superior and since the Bourne game ISN'T going to be released on the PC, I'd hate to find myself lacking something like that. I've loved Black Isle and now I love Obsidian, for their ability to get the right atmosphere in games, perfect scripts, dialogs that blow your mind away and endings that ... well, if you didn't complain about the ending of games like, oh, I don't know, say Jericho, Crysis and Assassin's Creed, you have NO right to complain about KotoR 2, especially since it was all LA's fault! -
KotoR 2 TSL > KotoR It's just like that.
