Low resolution cutscenes...sloppy.
DemonKing replied to DemonKing's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Hmmm...well I seem to remember some of the cutscenes in the original KOTOR had the same problems. I assumed it was something to do with the game being a console port - it's a bit confusing because some of the cutscenes look fine but others are positively blurry and pixelated. -
I understand that this game on PC suffers a little due to it sharing a console platform, but I really can't accept the atrocious low-res cutscenes that occur in 2 or 3 parts of the game. Instead of enjoying what would probably be a cool progression of the story, I spend all my time squinting at the screen trying to work out what the hell is going on. Is there any technical reason we PC gamers have to put up with this? Or is it just "lazy port" syndrome?

Kotor-II ending is a anti-climax
DemonKing replied to Badsight's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Don't worry - my PC was definitely female but in certain cutscenes Kreia referred to the exile (me) as "he". Could be it was a bit buggy, that's all - or you clicked on the wrong button without realising it. -
I'd just like to give my thought on the "missing content" issue, seeing as Obsidian and Lucasarts have claimed that there was no more cut content than normal. I must say my initial impressions of KOTOR2 were very favourable - the first NPCs you meet come across as very detailed with a lot to say and the promise of more to come, but by half way through the game it seemed that most of them had "run out of steam". Only Kreia seemed to have anything new to add. NPCs like Bao Dur and Visas Marr didn't seem to evolve for the entire game, and I was particularly disappointed that Go-to, one of the more intriguing characters, also suffered from this problem. Compare this to the original, where almost every available party NPC in the game had an interesting backstory you were prompted to fully explore over the course of the game (even if I didn't like the constant "It looks like Carth has something to say" heavyhandedness of it all) - it is no surprise the NPCs here seem a little bit shallow and underdeveloped in the sequel. Also there were whole plots I would like to see resolved - for example, the HK50 droids that pursued me relentlessly but then seemed to lose interest around the half-way point. The introduction of the two Sith Lords was effective, but then they blink out of sight only to emerge towards the game's conclusion to fill the obligitory "end-boss" slots. Also the whole thing with Go-to and Bao Dur's droid at the end should have been cut as it makes little sense as is. So, in conclusion, I would say that despite the best PR efforts of the parties' involved in developing in this game, it's glaringly obvious that with a little more time and work it could have been so much more than it is. In fact - it's pretty clear the developers wanted it to be more than it is, but were forced to make unsatisfactory compromises to reach a designated deadline. Please don't make the same mistake next time.

Akalabeth, Temple of Aphasi and Wizardy I, Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on the Apple IIe spring to mind - I guess played around 1981? Then for C64 I had the whole Bard's Tale series, The Gold Box games, Magic Candle, Phantasie, Ultimas up to #6 etc Around the early 90s got my first IBM compatible and enjoyed everything from Eye of the Beholder and Lands of Lore on. Never owned a console so I guess my favourite console CRPG is Knights of the Old Republic (for PC).

Anyone got a link to the Dr Who leak? It won't be shown on TV in Germany so I'd like to check it out before I fork out for the season one DVD boxed set when it is inevitably released.

The legal status of the old Black Isle games?
DemonKing replied to Yst's topic in Computer and Console
I recently saw a rembundled package of BIS games on the shelves here in Germany which had BG + expansion, BG2 + expansion, IWD + expansion and IWD2, so someone must have the rights to distribute them. Next time I'm in the shop, I'll check who the publisher is. -
Cautionary Statement: Latest Catalyst drivers
DemonKing replied to a topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I just switched from a 9800Pro to a Geforce 6800GT - the pro was my first and last ATI card (at least until Nvidia totally loses the plot). The image quality was great but the drivers sucked - the rapid driver releases meant that while problems were often fixed, all too often they screwed support up for other titles. I'll stick with Nvidia updating their drivers every few months then ATI spitting out crap updates every month. I've never had a problem with Nivida drivers and any game, but with ATI I was often tearing my hair out. -
I seem to remember my first KOTOR Sith guy was "Darth Malephon". In KOTOR2 I have a female Sith Lord called "Eviserath". Can't remember the name of my light side Jedi from the original...good is too boring!

Correlation, causation, etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> OK - maybe the closing of the BIS boards would be a better correlation (although BIS was pretty much down the gurgler by then anyway - I left the boards the day FO3 got canned as there was nothing left for me there). The point is boards can help develop loyal customers. Yes sometimes they will use it to voice disappointments, and some idiots will tend to be overally abusive, but nothing will sour a fanbase more than not having an outlet to voice their concerns/praise and generally hang out (except maybe giving them a forum and *then* taking it away!) The problem is that some posters fail to understand that posting here is a privilege, not a god-given right. There is a right way to voice your disatisfaction -flame wars and PMing developers is not the way to go about it...although as always I imagine it's a vocal minority causing the problem - I doubt it ever occurred to most posters here to ever PM a developer.

say it aint so, feargus
DemonKing replied to NeverwinterKnight's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Feargus - I'm with you 100% on this one. While I wouldn't like to see the Obsidian boards get as uptight as the Bio boards (where I rarely go because of the rather heavy-handed moderation), there must be a happy medium somewhere. BTW - Congratulations on the new addition to the family. -
It could all be some dark, illuminati conspiracy to reduce Volo's post count to 0.

Closing the forums would be a bit daft... 1. Gamers hate censorship. A community where they can blow off steam without "The man" coming down too hard means a lot to gamers. Sure open flaming and abuse should be stomped on, but closing the forums seems extreme. 2. Troika never had a forum and never paid much attention to their fan base and look where they are now.

I assumed it was the SW equivalent of "S L U T", since it seems to be applied mainly to female characters.

You hit the nail on the head here - they're busy hyping Jade Empire to the stratosphere at present, but following its release in April, I'm sure they will start the DA hype around time for E3.

Top 10 Best Selling PC Games For Feb. 12
DemonKing replied to funcroc's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Because the list is for PC games - Halo 2 ain't out on PC (yet). On one hand, I guess I should congratulate Obsidian, especially since this will secure their financial future for a while and hopefully give them the leeway to produce their own IPs. On the other hand this will probably just encourage Lucasarts to produce KOTOR3 in quick time and with not enough QA. -
Thanks guys - I read the manual before I went to sleep last night and discovered what I was doing wrong. Alas having finished the first game a couple of times I didn't bother reading the manual when I installed thinking the developers would take an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality. More fool me.

Well I also got a lot of lip from Atton when I turned up in my undies (female PC) and he seemed disappointed when I finally found some clothes, so I went back to him in my draws again and he said *nothing*. Men! First he's drooling all over me then I give him what he wants and he gives me the cold shoulder.
-
...but as soon as Kreia joined my party I immediately took her clothes off...you know...as a kind of experiment...um...thing, and well - you *can* take her clothes off but her appearance doesn't change at all. She still has her robe and hood and everything. Hope they fix this in the patch!

I have to say the interface from this game is a step back from the previous game (PC version, anyway). How am I supposed to assign scripts? Everytime I move the little icon at the bottom of the screen to something different from "aggressive", it reverts back again as soon as I move the mouse away! Is this just me or does anyone else have this bug?

Rome rocks...it's a bit complicated at first, but having just played through a second time with a different faction, it means you're still learning new stuff on repeated playings. GOTY 2004.

Yeah - but I *also* want an MP3 player.

Just a dumb question but you can also use an i-pod as a mobile HD right (ie to store stuff other than music). I'm thinking of the time when I have to move countries again and rather than backing everything up on CDs I could just load it all into an i-pod (or something similar) and then download into another system when I reach my destination.

LOL - you mean Troika were actually better businessmen than they were designers...now that is a funny thought!

Hey - I play a lot of FPS games, but I can understand those...left click = fire, maybe a secondary attack mode (melee, grenade launcher on my m16 whatever) and gee whiz...sometimes even a 3rd seperate button for grenades these days...but that's about as much as I can handle. I *like* those kind of action games. Now the original gauntlet had one button and a joystick from memory. So I could handle that right fine too. I only have a problem when I have to memorise 234 different combo moves and button combos to have any chance of progressing/doing OK. If Gauntlet is one of those, then I'm SOOL no matter how great the story is. Call me an old timer if you like, but those type of games basically *are* button-mashing for me because I'll be damned if I can get 'em to work right. Hell - I couldn't even work out the melee combat in Riddick - I ended up just runnng around in circles and bopping the bad guys on the head to get through.
