Pictures of your Games 11 - The Quickening

Been replaying New Vegas, man, what a great game this is. Just made it into Dead Money... gotta love the 30 minute dialogue dump at the start which basically amounts "everything here will kill you", haha. Still, Father Elijah is one my favorite characters in the whole franchise, the voiceactor really nailed that performance.

Count me in with the camp who thinks the nighttime music made a huge difference for the atmosphere in BG. I loved that everything felt a lot more... mysterious and threatening if you got somewhere during nighttime. Something to consider for future releases at least I think. All in all, I think the sound design is amazing in Deadfire. I think I prefered the music in the first game but all the ambient stuff, sound effects and stuff like music for the taverns is really, really well done in Deadfire. Makes the whole place really come alive.

I'm finishing up Honest Hearts on my New Vegas replay and oh my god, the Survivalist logs. Definitely some of the best "reading logs" content ever written in a game. They are deeply moving to me.

Replayed Fallout 1. Which still holds up extremely well for the most part. Only thing that I found annoying was some of the inventory management towards the end of the game when you have a lot of stuff. On the whole, I really love this game and still find it to be an absolutely amazing experience. Fairly short and sweet. Replayed Fallout 2. I love Fallout 2 but holy cow, it is an extremely uneven game. When it's good, it's *really* good. But then there is sooooo much filler, mostly in terms of really uninspired combat encounters. No game, it's not fun to be dropped into a random encounter with 14 enemies all taking their slow turns (yes, even with combat speed turned up) before you get to act. And there's quite a lot of that in the game. It's a fun game, but frustrating as hell sometimes. Now moving on to Fallout: New Vegas.

Finished up The Banner Saga 3 after replaying the other episodes. It was a good finish to the story and I like where the story went. But the final chapter felt a bit short I think, especially given that it's more expensive than the other episodes. And the actual ending really sucked, it really needed a more substantial "what happened afterwards" type of deal. Still, if you're looking for something different, I would definitely give them try once a decent sale comes around. Now I'm gonna replay Fallout 1.

Ydwin's voice
Starwars replied to pikea1's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I have no idea who the voiceactor is or what she's done (she certainly seems well-respected) but yeah, I have a really hard time with her voice as used in Deadfire. At least for the narrator and Ydwin, don't know if she does any more. -
New info about DLC 2
Starwars replied to Daled's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Fun combat encounters are always welcome, I just hope that it's not areas really choked up with encounters so to speak. But yeah, I don't think this particular DLC will be to my taste. Which is completely fine. I guess we'll see. -
So, it's been a few months. We've had time to digest the game a little bit, and to voice our complaints about difficulty, combat mechanics, sidekicks, romances, story, ship combat and all of that stuff. But at this point, what were the things that Deadfire really succeeded at in your opinion? Here are mine in no particular order: -Opening the game up. For some I think this clashes a bit with the narrative, but I absolutely love that we got a full world map to sail around on at our own leisure. It wasn't something that I actively wished for after PoE but I think it was a very positive thing for the game. -Factions. Somewhat tied to the above point but again, I love the fact that the game got a "New Vegas treatment" and made a large part of the game story be... well, about the Deadfire, the power plays and the people within in. Discovering the factions, working for them, deciding who to help and who to screw over, getting your companions' take on them. I love that. Possibly my favorite improvement on the first game. -Making companions less of a story hub and more of an active element as you're travelling. I think everyone (myself included) always want as much depth as possible in the companions, it's pretty amazing how much companion interjections there are in dialogues throughout the game and I think it was a good trade-off vs the "heya, let me exhaust all the dialogue options" style that was more prevalent in PoE1. -Neketaka. I (and many others) have been wanting a really good RPG city for a while now and for me, Neketaka really delivered on that. It was extremely fun to explore, plenty of merchants, quests and characters. I'm really glad they chose to make it a big focus of the game. -Audio immersion. I think the audio team did a great job at making scenes come alive, especially in stuff like the scripted interactions. And stuff like the tavern music really sell the atmosphere. Broadly speaking I think I liked the music in PoE1 one more but overall, the sound of Deadfire is a big improvement. -Day/night/weather cycles. I would love to see more done with this in future games, making day and night matter more and have the game be a bit more "simulationist" but Deadfire made good strides in this area as well. Hope that it's something they develop more in the future. -Multiclassing. Just plain old fun to tinker with.

I bought Unavowed. Good but not great adventure game.

Replaying the Banner Saga, gonna make my way up to the newly released third installment. I really like the first game, but making my way into the second one makes me remember why I was annoyed with it. Namely that it goes through exactly the same tutorializing that the first game does with no way to skip all the "click here, and now click here, and now you must train in camp, and now you must do this" stuff. Since the story is such a direct continuation of the first game, it's extremely annoying to have such a slow start and to go through exactly the same things you had to do in the first game.
-
I'm playing Unavowed. Guess I'm a little more than halfway through or thereabouts. I'm a bit torn on it. It's an adventure game moving into a more "you have choices" territory. Especially in terms of story. You choose gender and an origin story which provides reactivity in the game. You also have "companions" that you can solve puzzles with, and that have some banter with each other and interjections here and there. You choose two companions to have alongside with you on each "mission". Sounds great on paper but I find it hard to get excited about it in the game. I don't know... it just doesn't amount to much that feels interesting, and I usually *love* all kinds of reactivity in games. And it kinda feels like the classic "as we move the genre into a storyheavier territory, so does the gameplay get easier". It's been extremely easy to play so far. I don't know. The setting is actually quite interesting, the writing is alright and the atmosphere is actually really good with some beautiful areas and nice soundtrack. But I guess I don't feel story and companion stuff is nearly interesting enough to make up for the lack of challenge in puzzles and such. Still enjoying it quite a bit but it hasn't quite lived up to my expectations.

-I don't think it will ever truly be satisfactory due to the nature of the mechanics but I hope they will do another difficulty pass, especially in the later game. -Related to the above point, but with each release of a DLC the difficulty and experience curve will get more screwed up. I really hope this gets looked at, though of course it may be tricky given that there are people who don't buy the DLC. But yeah, as someone who got all the DLCs, I want those to feel integrated smoothly into the game and not feel like "I did this DLC and now the rest of the game is completely broken and non-challenging". -Certain bugs obviously needs to be fixed, the Guardian not appearing being among the top ones. -In terms of additions, I would love for there to be more stuff like more random scripted interactions when sailing the seas. I love the ones that are there but I think it could use some more.
-
I just finished my replay of the game, also got the bug where the Guardian didn't show up properly. That is the most serious bug I've had I think. I'd consider Deadfire in the "middle" regarding bugs. I get some bugs here and there but there are most often of no consequnce and merely annoyances. Given the game's size and complexity, especially with all the faction stuff and different systems, I expected a much more broken game but I haven't had any problems in terms of quests breaking or stuff like that.

RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS - BATTLE ROYALE
Starwars replied to Blarghagh's topic in Computer and Console
I played the first Rage for a bit and it was one of the most boring shooter experiences I've had I think. -
I like Edér a lot in Deadfire as well as in PoE1. Though I think he definitely felt like he was more of a centerpiece to PoE1. And I would agree that they need to lay the "pet animals!" thing to rest a bit. As far as BoW goes, I have mixed feelings on it I have to say. + The setting is cool (no pun intended) + It's a nice change to get some quality time with a single god again. It's mainly bickering in the main game, so it's great to focus on just one. And Rymrgand is a glorious butthole, makes for a good character I think. + I like that they went a bit crazy with the areas, nice to get into more obviously supernatural stuff in the Beyond. + Probably my most favorite thing was the lore tidbits. It was all interesting to me, with Waidwen's story being the highlight. I wish we had gotten even more backstory because that was genuinely fascinating. -The combat was a huge step back from Deadfire I think. For the main game, it felt like they made an effort to pull back on the encounters and I think it really improved the pace and made the game "breathe" a bit. For BoW, I think it once again feels 1) too copy/paste and 2) overly reliant on "mobs popping up behind your party". It never turns into a slog like Gambino's Workshop but it definitely felt like a move in the wrong direction for me. It felt like padding. -Gimmicks like teleportation puzzles and raising/lowering water levels feel like a creative lowpoint. And again, it just feels like padding that slows the game down. Puzzles can be fun in RPGs, but the ones in BoW just felt really uninspired and like you've seen it a million times before. So yeah, setting, story, choices and lore were really cool. The more immediate gameplay like exploration, combat and puzzles was pretty mediocre I think. A good addition to the game I would say!

I'm thinking we might get one more Watcher game. I don't really have any hopes or desires for a setting for that to be honest, they've got a bunch of cool locations to choose from to be sure. In the future, I really hope they will move both back and foward in the timeline. I would love to see the world go forward with new technical innovations and all that, as well as checking out the history of Eora. I hope they will not feel the need to keep everything Pillars be contained within the same timeframe.
-
Same here. Obviously, we're all at different skill levels but if I choose Path of the Damned then I want the game to go all out and really work against me. I think it should take knowledge of the gameplay systems, the consumables, viability of classes and how they combine, choosing good equipment, etc. It shouldn't need challenges outside the "normal base game" (such as no pausing allowed) to feel extremely hard. Haven't tried PotD after the tweaks though so hope it's better. It must be an ordeal to tune games such as this. But yeah, with PotD I think it should really be aimed at challenging the very best of players.

[2.0] Save Game window stops working
Starwars replied to jww's question in Patch Beta Bugs and Support
I got the "save is greyed out" thing as well, for me it happened right after the interaction with the Adra pillar in the Engwithan digsite dungeon. Quicksave also didn't work. The issue cleared up once I transitioned into the exterior area.
