  1. When you're gods among men, I guess it's suspected
  2. Not to take things too off topic, but handheld and cell phone games are perfect candidates for the more "traditional" CRPG style. You'll get your isometric views and whatnot more easily there.
  3. To be honest, my day is going better now that I have been referred to as: Iron William Rackham
  4. It still works. But I'm curious why they're not using the hype surrounding the game before the release to gain attention for the demo. After a game is released, I seldom bother to download demos. I just read reviews instead. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why not? It's effectively still the same thing, in terms of trying out the game and seeing how it runs. I don't typically play demos to build up the hype for a game for me, but rather to see what the game is like. I still feel it's a much better assessment of the game than a review. As for why they wouldn't do it to help build the hype with a prerelease demo, maybe they'd rather have their team working on the final product since they already had a minor delay recently, and are likely in a huge crunch. Taking people off the project to work on a demo is probably low priority.
  5. I'm really hoping it's just a language barrier thing going on right now...
  6. More just the natural, obvious progression of the thread. As soon as I saw the title of it, I knew we'd be talking pirate names.
  7. Iron William Rackham A pirate's life isn't easy; it takes a tough person. That's okay with you, though, since you a tough person. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!
  8. I said basic geography, not exact. I knew it was an African country and not some town in South Dakota. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Good for you. I hadn't even heard of the country prior to looking it up.

Regarding Oilers tickets...well, it's pretty much impossible to get the preseason tickets if I remember correctly. Regular season will likely be a gong show. I heard the minipaks sold like crazy.
  10. Sure. I'm curious why this doesn't work if the demo was released after the intended release date though?
  11. Unfortunately game enthusiasts likely make up a rather insignificant part of the market. If they made up a larger share, then we'd have more games that didn't have gee-whiz bang graphics. Even then, I'd still wager there is a fair share of game enthusiasts that have found it hard to get into a game with heavily outdated graphics. Heck, I'm one of them. I'm a giant fan of the 2nd trilogy of the Ultima games (as well as the Ultima 7 games), but I find it hard to pick up and try playing the original Ultima games, despite their critical acclaim. And I disagree that games like NWN, WoW, and The Sims had horrible graphics. As you say, it's all about relative to the times. Especially considering graphics can be mitigated by art style (which is a huge bonus to a game like WoW). Furthermore, you're not really arguing anything significant. Not surprisingly, games that are fun are the big sellers. But those games were being sold compared to other games. How well would a NWN looking game do today, especially when going up against NWN2? If graphics are as unimportant as you seem to be making them out to be, why did Obsidian completely rewrite the graphics engine for NWN2? Why were there engine changes for KOTOR and KOTOR 2 from the original NWN engine? Furthermore, why were games like Fallout not even really that great of a seller in its own right? I agree that the game is phenomenal, but clearly there was something that stopped it from making significant sales. It couldn't all just be a lack of advertising or some other unfortunate circumstances. There are other posts by people I would probably consider game enthusiasts in this thread alone, as well as scattered throughout this forum, of people that upon playing Fallout for the first time recently aren't all that impressed by it.
  12. I've still seen that Battlechest at almost every computer store. I think the game itself is still a decent seller, for a game that's like 8 years old.
  13. Ah, but you see, therein lies the conundrum. You found that picture....so if you just googled it, it would have told you the answer. Joy! Now lies the next question....is it really that "sad" that I actually didn't know where Botswana was before I asked that question (I googled a map of Africa)? Because quite honestly, I could go through the rest of my life never typing or saying Botswana ever again. Isn't the important thing that, should I ever need to know where Botswana is, I am capable of finding out in a speedy manner?
  14. *sigh* Ok meta, gives us the answer. I was hoping to get the other kids involved today.
  15. Then a great many people in the world are sad. I mean, I'm sure you know exactly where Botswana is on the map without looking.
  16. I think the issue is that most people that have a hard time going back to play a game like MOO or Fallout that didn't play them originally, are the ones that have the issues for the graphics. Since it was brought up, the only people that think NHL '94 is the best NHL hockey game EA has ever made are those that played those styles of games. They can champion the "gameplay" as much as they want, but it's still essentially the same. Players mash on burst of speed to lay out big hits, they go up the wing, try for the centering pass to a one-timer. Scores were as ridiculous then as they are now.
  17. Unfortunately, given the internets, I don't know if you just googled a map! I used to always get paraguay and uruguay backwards.
  18. Otherwise known as the Medieval: Total War expansion known as Viking INvasion?
  19. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'll have to dig through CrashGirl's posts to find her mods. Might as well start fresh!
  20. I'm betting large chunks of the world population wouldn't be able to find Afghanistan without a map. Same goes for countries like Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, etc.
  21. I think I did have a lighting bow. I got it from a Vampire (who was level 5 )
  22. Then you're an exception. THe mere fact that games don't come out with the graphics of Fallout demonstrates that the market prefers higher quality graphics. Otherwise, companies WOULD make games where they put all the focus on the gameplay. Believe it or not, but the game development companies allocate their resources based on what the demographic wants. I enjoy gameplay as well, but better graphics can enhance gameplay. I am a fan of having 360 degree freedom of movement, rather than being limited to a hexagonal grid. I like games (including turn based ones) that aren't rather slow if there is multiple characters doing actions. Fighting the Regulators in Bonetown wasn't exactly an exhilrating experience, either back in the 90s or now. It's cool to start off. You know, a big fight between the Blades and the Regulators, with you in the middle. What's not to like? Until you realize you're have to wait for minutes at a time before you can actually continue playing the game again. Until then, you see people running around, one at a time, shooting their guns. If you're lucky, you might actually see the target that they hit...assuming they are close enough. And I love Fallout. Played through it a dozen times, most recently being a year or two ago. The thing I love about it is the setting. If you're really that much of a fan of the actual gameplay mechanics, you might want to give Silent Storm a try. The gameplay seems like it was inspired by Fallout.

Pffft, that's old. It stll has Chris Simon
  24. We're not talking about graphics whores that loved Fallout several years ago, but rather people that never played Fallout several years ago, and are just picking it up for the first time. That seems to be the situation that those claiming to have issues with the graphics are. Neither, because they didn't play it. Anyone that has played Fallout before, and is willing to go back and play it again, probably liked the game when they first played it. Otherwise they probably wouldn't bother playing it again.
