Got a request for help here--once upon a time I installed a bunch of custom portraits and made heavy use of them. I recently decided to do another playthrough after many months, and, like a marooon, I failed to save my custom portrait folder in a safe place before I installed the new patches. So they've all apparently vanished now, and I'm trying to track them down again The vast majority appear to have come from this set of BG portraits by artastrophe: http://artastrophe.deviantart.com/art/PaintBG-v2-409324931 Exceptional fan work! They were posted on these boards in PoE-ready form here: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/67198-baldurs-gate-portraits-for-pillars-of-eternity/ (second post) Unfortunately the kind soul who did so used Box and I can't download it from that link without shelling out money, it seems. I have no idea where I got this pack from originally. I can't find any other source of it, and I can't really edit the portraits myself. Anyone got any ideas?

NPC story progression

I believe the only NPC personal quest you need to worry about coordinating is Aloth's… if you don't resolve it before the end of Act II, you missed your chance. If you want to be certain not to miss it: Durance requires you to have him in your party for a certain number of rests. It will not advance if you leave him out of your party. You will need to travel and rest with him for the scenes to trigger. Kana only needs to explore one particular level of Cad Nua; I believe it is floor 7, and I don't think there is a way to "miss" it. Everyone else's quest is pretty straightforward. They ask for your help in doing something, and if you want to advance the quest… just do the thing. Obviously they will have to be in your party when you do it. ETA: There are certain places where Eder will offer to speak to you if you bring him there (you get the "Eder wants to speak with you" icon), and your response to him, while it does not affect your ability to complete his quest, may affect the ending he gets. One of these is the Dozens' adventuring hall, another is the Crucible Knights' shrine to Abydon; so having Eder with you when you visit these places may be attractive to you. There may be others I can't remember, too. -
Soooo I know this isn't what you want to do, but if you're playing a paladin, I really recommend you turn the affected reputation markers on. There are a LOT of instances where the game labels a response something I never would have guessed, and you're just going to drive yourself crazy trying to figure them out. If you're committed to keeping them off, I recommend you get used to the idea that you're not going to max out your paladin's reputation. Also, keep in mind there are a lot of conversations where what you say has no effect on your reputations at all, even when they are verifiably honest or dishonest answers. Why don't I get points in Deceptive for lying to the Berathian priest guards in Raedric's hold? Only Obsidian knows why some lies "count" and some don't, I guess.

Yes, monks are good. Invest in a lot of Might and Dex and you'll have no trouble dishing out plenty of damage with just your bare fists. You do not need to use weapons and heavy armor. I'm using a Moon Godlike monk on Hard difficulty with clothing and bare fists and she is lightning fast and consistently does the most damage in the party. Eder tanks and she flanks, or takes on one opponent by herself. That allows her to take enough wounds to fuel her powers without getting overwhelmed. Her racial power covers most of the healing she needs and Durance helps her out when I mess up and she gets swarmed. I've found it to be very fun and effective playing the monk class in the "traditional" way with just fists and clothing. If you want a monk that is more of a tank than a DD, you'd probably go with more armor and a different build, but this is the kind of monk I wanted to play and it's working out great. No reason you can't do it too.

Small language choice issue

Hi, thanks for replying but I don't understand your response. I know that "kith" = all races in this world. That's precisely why I think it's a better fit for this line. Freyol is saying "Some animancers treat us like vermin, but Azo doesn't. He treats us with the respect due to a sentient organism." That's why a word like "kith" is a better fit than the specific word "human" in this context. The word "people" would also be sufficiently generic (only it's used in the very next line). Saying, "Some animancers treat us like vermin, but Azo doesn't. He treats us like we are specifically members of the sentient race of Humans" is not a statement that makes any sense here. -
Okay, so I also happen to be playing a Mooninite on a Mac with the GOG version, albeit 1.0.5 rather than 1.0.6. I did some testing of this last night. My findings so far are that although Silver Tide is never listed in the combat log as hitting my Moonie, it always does. So, here we can see the following: my monk ate a pie to give her +10 endurance over her natural 62. That gave her 72 endurance. A very rude mushroom knocked her on her butt for 24 points of damage, SO RUDE. That left her at End 48. Silver Tide activated. In the log, it only shows it hitting the other party members. But you can see in the shot that green "19" floating over my monk, and indeed, her health bar shows that she is now at 48+19=67 Endurance. Silver tide hit her, it just did not show up in the combat log. I don't have any other screenshots that illustrate it so clearly, but my observations are that this is happening every single time: Silver Tide hits her, and it is never listed in the combat log. So unless you're experiencing something very different, the problem isn't that Silver Tide isn't working, it's that it's not being reported properly.

In the asylum, a woman says Azo treats them "like humans." It seems to be a poor choice of words in a world with multiple humanoid races, especially since, if I'm squinting at her character model the right way, Freyol appears to be an elf herself! I think this was probably a typo for something like "kith."

So, first of all, don't worry about "winning the argument" with your friend. His opinion is his opinion and he's entitled to it! That said, there are only a handful of quests in the game where your only options are either "pass a stat check" or "murder everyone." In fact, I can only really think of two that are like that--one is the previously mentioned lighthouse ghost, and the stat check is quite reasonable; the other is a very lategame quest where you either pass a Res 20 check or get in a huge fight (and frankly, for what you're attempting to do, you deserve it). There are multiple conversations in the game where you can achieve a peaceful result simply by choosing non-stat-linked dialog carefully. Two endgame enemies can be dealt with peacefully in this fashion! There are also many Lore, Perception, Int., and Survival checks that do nothing except give flavor to the conversation. Perhaps your friend is seeing these "flavor" checks and thinking "dammit, I'm missing out on an alternate resolution to this quest!" when it simply isn't the case.

He knows because six random, armed strangers went up and interrogated him about the breastplate, then clomped into the records office right next door to where he's standing. He knows where to find you because where else would you go to authenticate his documents? "But I snuck into that office silently/didn't talk to Penhelm!" Penhelm is also psychic. This is the real reason he faked his documents. It's a secret to everybody.

Since you don't plan to use Durance, why not try a priest? A PC priest has the advantage over Grumpnacious D, since you can beef up your Radiance to be a really nice 1 per encounter heal with your reputation bonuses, and he can't. (You will also not give yourself a silly 9 Dex, most likely.) My first playthrough was with a Priestess of Eothas and I found that she had a really nice amount of dialogue reactivity as well as being a key figure in battle. A priest, like all casters, is really weak at the start of the game but becomes a spell-spamming powerhouse near the end. If you don't want to wait that long for your character to come into their own, you could try one of the classes not represented by the in-game companions: Rogue, Monk, or Barbarian. They can all be superb DDs and the Monk and Barb can also off-tank if needed. If you go this route, though, you are going to be somewhat weak on healing and buffs in your party and will have to depend on consumables a lot. You would also have to depend on Pallegina to bail you out of any strong debuffs, which will be extremely risky in a tough fight. But if you're up for a different experience, go for it.

I have no idea how better to describe this, so here's a screenshot. You can see that my party has not attacked the nobles here, and the nobles are "green" and nonhostile, but if my party members get close enough to touch them, the nobles "engage" my party in combat, and even perform disengagement attacks, although they do not actually move, perform attack animations, or turn red! Again, this only happens once you have killed Rinatto in the ambush and then return to the inn, so I have to think it's related. Rinatto is one spooky-ass ghost.
