  1. Yeah after it was revealed that the Leaden Key was behind the Hollowborn in Cilaban Rilag I was like wow this is a really big deal! And my companions had...no reaction to this information which made the whole Hollowborn epidemic seem unimportant. Even when my character tried to claim that stopping Thaos from doing more stuff was their motivation, companions and various NPCs kept going back to how my character needed to find him to not go insane. The insanity is...underplayed, I actually didn't know my character was going insane until I saw it as one of the main quest summaries in the journal. The story has some interesting elements, but it's not tied together all that well.
  2. Faith and Conviction bonuses are cool, but having them be unobtainable to non-PC Paladins is a problem. Making them based off the PC would work well enough (if a paladin is with a group that doesn't represent his/her ideals, they probably are not doing such a great job).

If I had the choice, I'd probably go for more race/class/background specific dialogue rather than dialogue based on attribute options since the former ties in with world lore more than the latter. Obsidian kind of put themselves in a rough spot with so many CC options though. The IE games weren't big on racial reactivity either from what I recall. BG2 it really just affects romances, I think elves get some dialogue in Suldenesselar.
  4. Oh you're not wrong. It is tacky and unprofessional. It's not blatant sexism though for the reasons listed, which was the charge levelled against Taylor as justification for his ordeal. I sincerely doubt he intended for it to be sexist, but anytime you paste a bunch of half naked people to yourself you really open up the door to that kind of criticism. I don't agree with the level of outrage over it, but it was a very poor choice.
  5. I disagree that the shirt portrays women as sex objects, at most it portrays cartoon women as sexually desirable. By his sleeve tatts and interviews prior to the shirt incident, we can surmise that Dr. Taylor is not a stereotypical scientist. It's not like he had a reputation for being sharply dressed and suddenly decided to wear this shirt, he has a well documented history of terrible fashion choices which this particular shirt blends into. He probably wanted to have a bit of fun with attire that is not associated with scientists of his calibre like he has been known to do in the past, while also helping to promote the female friend who made the shirt for him. That's the context. What happened to Matt Taylor was an absolute disgrace and I can't ever see eye to eye on this issue with anyone who believes that he somehow deserved it in any way shape or form. To add to that, we haven't heard any of his coworkers complain about his behaviour or choice of attire in the least and to our knowledge, he still works there with the same level of authority. If he truly perpetuated a culture uncomfortable for women or sexist in nature, we would've eventually heard stories about it since the media at the time was hunting for blood. Finally, to be frank, if a person chooses to let some guy's tacky shirt prevent them from entering their desired field/career, they probably weren't cut out for it in the first place. Regardless of previous fashion choices, wearing something that at best is tacky and unprofessional and at worst is extremely controversial is totally unacceptable when acting as an international public face for your company. Even without the dreaded SJWs getting involved, many employers would fire an employee for such a terrible choice. He didn't get fired, so I consider him fairly lucky. People who say "well he just wanted to support his friend" or "he just wanted to show off his fun side" do not properly understand how the world of business works IMO.
  6. Is that what you guys call regular people these days? I don't think people who compare a willingly changed limerick in a video game to Communism/Nazism qualify as "normal".
  7. As a backer I DON'T care a duck about ppl uninvolved in the funding. The game's got pegi 16 rating: a clear warning to stay the duck out of it. Good for you. Obsidian cares about the opinions of non backers though, probably because that's most of the people who buy the game.
  8. My thoughts exactly when I think of the SJWs! Ok then don't buy from Obsidian anymore. I don't think any of us really care where you spend your money.
  9. Obsidian asked the backer whether he wanted to change it and he agreed. I am not seeing how that is censorship. Oh right, the SJWs "forced" Obsidian to censor it and they in turn "forced" the backer to change it, despite all accounts.
  10. Guess this is a matter of opinion then. Personally I seem to remember the characters in BG1 being pretty barebone, BG2 expanded this some but then most of that character development was romance content. The probably most fondly remembered and memorable character didn't even have much of a storyline or quests, Minsc was just funny/awesome one liners. I feel that if Minsc were a character in a modern RPG, people would complain about how all he does is make dumb one liners, no depth, very little character development and represents a decline in writing quality of RPGs today etc. The BG2 (and the even more threadbare BG1 characters) get "passes" from a lot of people due to the age of the game and the age of the gamers who played it. There would also definitely be complaints such as "why should my PC give a **** about Gorion, we had like 5 minutes and half a conversation with him before he died".
  11. The strongholds in BG2 didn't really feel like strongholds at all, but they were an opportunity to put in a lot of class specific content which PoE is pretty lacking in.

  13. Pardon my French, but... bull-sh*t. Anyone can spew forth a giant script of perfectly crafted prose, complete with Victorian era influences (or whatever's your favorite) dripping with utterly 'mature' subject matter. But that doesn't, on its own, make for a good story. And in a video game, adhering to traditional literary technique can result in tiresome cliché. In PoE's case, You play the role of the Speshul, chosen one. If it wasn't for the fact that cliché, been-there-done-that, plotlines don't bother me, I'd have condemned PoE's story about a week ago. But, as it happens, I see PoE's story as "good enough". And as a sidenote, I rank it higher than D:OS's and DA:I's. This probably won't be a popular opinion around here, but I found DA:I's characters (the companions and advisers) more interesting than PoE's. Yeah, the writing for Bioware companions can be a little juvenile at times...but at least I'm entertained by them and felt like my character had a connection/relationship with them. PoE's companions largely feel like they join me for kinda random reasons, dump their backstories on me, then give me a short quest and don't really change or anything. While I really Baldur's Gate 2, I think Dragon Age: Origins did a much better job with companions mainly because interaction with the BG2 companions felt very limited. For most of the non romanceable characters, I believe there were only a handful of instances where the PC could even speak with them after joining and those were only in instances triggered by playtime. I feel like Baldur's Gate 2 set the bar for companions and Bioware's later games (plus other companies like Obsidian with Mask of the Betrayer) exceeded it. This is seperate from plot though, DA:I's plot is very basic (although has some nice themes about faith and stuff I guess) and its sidequests do it no favors.
  14. I think people overly offended at the notion of Obsidian removing it are also ridiculous frankly. Blahblah censorship integrity we'll boycott yadda yadda, it's a few lines of irrelevant text a backer wrote.

I think part of the difference is that the hanged people(and a number of the other 'mature themed things in the game) are an important part of the plot, atmosphere, world etc. specifically created by Obsidian. The joke is a few lines of text that was not even created by Obsidian which serves no purpose other than to acknowledge backers. Removing the latter is not the same as removing something that's actually important to the game.

I don't see how they're obligated to put exactly what the backers wrote into their product. Yes and the joke on that tombstone was aleady approved by obsidian, they decide what goes in the game, not some Twitter Lynch Mob of offended people that didn't even buy the game judging by many of their tweets Given the general quality of the memorial stones and Sawyer's reaction, I think it's fair to say that there may have been some oversight with reahrds to the backer content. If Obsidian removes it, I'll assume that's because they don't think it fits in their game and I'm cool with that.

  18. This situation is kinda odd, because it's not Obsidian who invented the content in the first place. Sawyer's reaction indicates to me that maybe they didn't look through the backer writing very carefully before inputting it, which means removing it might be what they wanted anyway. If this were actual Obsidian writing content I could see defending it as artistic vision or whatnot, but I don't think a limerick by a backer really qualifies.
