It does take some getting used to. At times I miss being able to pick a select amount of spells from a much larger list of spells which made characters like druids and priests more mutable. A party with two druids in it works but they have the same spells and feel like you're playing two identical characters.

I love Arcanum.. one of my favorite games. I've probably played it about once a year since it's release. I still find new stuff I haven't encountered before. Most games have been listed here. The only other ones I can think of are Syndicate and Syndicate Wars. Not really rpg.. not really strategy, although elements of both. I have no idea what genre they'd fall under. Fun at any rate.

Combat should last longer
vyvexthorne replied to Parsalian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I've had some realllly long fights. .. In the beginning there are plenty of short fights. But at some point you'll start encountering larger groups and it becomes a battle to keep all your characters intact. At this point, if I stumble upon just one bad guy all alone, I rejoice that it's going to be a short fight. -
Exactly.. Although I do it with "enemy spotted".. but either works. Too many auto pauses makes for some really fidgety gameplay. The only other one I have checked is "hidden item found".. is good for not stomping on traps.

O btw the music is good
vyvexthorne replied to Longknife's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I really like the music and feel it fits the game well. I hear lots of influences from past games ....(and recent movies.) Like most music, it enhances the environment. On it's own it might sound lackluster or repetitive... but in the background it fills in the blanks. -
My main pc is a rogue. So far she has the highest kill count and highest damage done during combat in the party. (I have no real idea why.. All I can figure is she gets the last strike on all the guys my tanks are whittling down.) I played her as an archer with a war bow at first and took the marksman ability at some point. .. but once I got shadowing beyond I started doing some serious sneak attack damage with stilettos. I still feel more comfortable with her as an archer but it's fun to switch weapons and run into battle every now and then. 'shadowing beyond is really a great ability.. although I chose it initially thinking that it would help me thieve goods from occupied areas. Unfortunately it turned out to be one of those silly "only in combat" abilities.

I feel that speed is a stat I need to be able to see. As it is, it's a guessing game. My weapon has an "average" speed.. (what's that?).. my armor has -% to speed. (that sounds bad.. but I don't know how bad..) I Really, really, really want to know what my recovery speed is and what exactly is going on with that stat.

The Custom Portraits Thread
vyvexthorne replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I decided to make my own generic portraits.. Portraits that might represent the class or feeling of a character I want to play rather than a face I feel I need to copy. examples: I also made some animal ones for druids; The rest are here if anybody wants any. http://imgur.com/a/FevX4 -
I've had this issue a bit when the party is behind trees or something. I have to click my mouse over the character portrait to see who's who but you still only get the green circle flashing. This can make it difficult to heal while in combat. I'm really used to the old system of just clicking the healing spell on the portrait of the character.. The first time I tried that my priest ran down to the corner of the map and cast a healing spell on nobody.

Do Talent Points Carry Over?
vyvexthorne replied to MikeWiz's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yes, Skill points carry over. Talent points do not... (but you have to choose talents to continue so saving them isn't even an option) -
The Custom Portraits Thread

This is the portrait I'm currently using for my female rogue. Works well for most human or elf character since you can't see the ears. -
The Custom Portraits Thread
vyvexthorne replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Anybody have a good idea where to find generic portraits that would represent the class of the character? Kind of like Neverwinter Nights 1 eventually had.. (like the 9 top portraits in the picture below) Some of those would actually work if I could find them anywhere. It would be so much easier to build a character and not have to rely on having to pick a portrait that only slightly resembles what I want to build. -
I Immediately had durance cast halt on him and took care of the blights.. I think another character had something that paralyzes as well but I can't remember what. I had found a ring of combusting wounds somewhere and had stuck that on my chanter..( my mage has that spell as well.) I got rid of the blights rather quickly with combusting wounds on the wind one and kalkoth's sunless grasp on the fire one. I then had my fighter use his knockdowns on Maerwald, rogue using crippling strike.. and then just spammed combusting wounds on him with every turn while smashing him with whatever abilities/spells the other characters could. Seemed to work out rather well.

They are pretty tough.. There were a few mobs that gave me some trouble. I don't think I've ever made it through an encounter with all characters conscious. On one occasion all I had left was the fighter but he triumphed - barely. (that's all I need for a win though.) Chanter chanting, mage blasting spells, cleric blasting spells.. I go all out if a fight seems tough. Lots of pausing, casting, drinking potions. Use every thing at your disposal because you can always rest afterwards. .. Seems like they really like to go for the mage so keep him moving about and far away so he doesn't auto initiate close combat.. (and then get killed when you try to run away.)

Ranger Archer?
vyvexthorne replied to LeBurns's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Bows work amazingly well. My rogue archer has the highest kill count for some reason. As for armor, I've just kind of stuck to my old precepts of who wears what. Seems to work pretty well.. (except for cipher or chanter since they are classes I've never dealt with before.) I do really wish I could see my characters speed stat.. I know that armor takes off a %.. but of what? Weapons obviously have speed attached as well but to what extent?.. what does "average" speed mean? I don't know, so I just have to guess and hope all works out.
