Follow up on my Ikea story. They're sending me the drawer carriers now and I get to keep the sky lantern since they, according to them, don't even sell those. I am amused and confused at the same time.

A lot of SVU episodes end with a twist, maybe they find out the harrassment was faked? -

Huh. Joystiq is shutting down. -
Galavant's finale wasn't great. It was building up to something and there was no payoff. I respect the direction they took but I also feel that I was hyped for something big and all that hype just dissipated into smaller plotlines. Now I'm curious for the next season, but not hyped.

Journalism and sexism in the games industry

Wiki doesn't do permanent bans. Always been a waiting period. I don't really see it that way, I think it just highlights how retarded these people are. Fun fact: I made sure to use the word retarded in the above statement because then they'll accuse me of being ableist, and the irony will be fan-****ing-tastic. I'm sure you've just internalized ableism or something. So - rather than infer either the use of sarcasm or the intentional use of rhetoric- is the ableist reference intended to highlight the nature of sexism in the gaming industry? Text is always awkward, and as the topic at hand affects dreams, careers and passion, I would rather not assume meaning. The reality - whether gaming, the arts in general, generative or creative avenues of vocation all the way to almost every sector of our western economy gender and sexism certainly stratify and divide. So - it is hopeful - whenever such conversation can occur with respect and civility to help us all see how we are both complicit and part of the solution. Or such is the hope as one who usually sits in the lofty heights in the Roost far above the sandbox known as WoT ... That would be great but does anyone think that the people that call themselves journalists nowadays are capable of having them? and I don't mean just gaming journalism but journalism in general as it has become more "yellowed" in general. I really think we need to demand a higher standard of quality from the people that are to be spokespersons for the industry. I'm pretty sure Fio just means here (and I think he's also missing some context regarding Longknife's post), although it would be great if we could actually have these conversations with respect and civility with journalists too. If we had been able to have that conversation with them, all of this could have been prevented. I highly doubt it. This thread actually comes up rarely (pretty sure it hasn't even been pruned once), and if it does it's because people are posting screencaps with uncensored profanity. You can disagree with that rule but you do have to follow it. Glad other people pointed it out in this thread, even if they may have done so only out of frustration. -
That makes me sad I don't actually have anywhere to watch that other than clips on YouTube. Oh well, I'll always have Whose Line...

Careful Hurlshot, your ageism is showing. I actually think an older actress in it would be fascinating. Whether it's a comedian or a serious actress. How about Helen Mirren? That would be awesome. I dunno where Malc is from, but SNL doesn't mean jack outside of north america. Hell, the only outlet I can even watch it is YouTube clips. Everything else, even paid streaming services, don't offer it here.

Well, that's true. The motivation of the casting could have been sexist. That reflects on the producers. I don't think that makes the product sexist by default, especially since that may not be the motivation of the writer or the director or the stars. But yeah. Rosanne is way better. Another option would be Kathy Kinney.

That part was in response to: "The movie itself is sexist. Why 4 women? Why not 2 women/2men?" That made it seem that you did object to it. Must have misunderstood. Either way, I don't think that making a version of the Ghostbusters with all women is sexist by itself.

Fair enough, she grates on my nerves something fierce but it's not like my opinion is law. On another note, anyone see that Fantastic Four trailer yet? Bunch of shots of actors just sitting or standing or looking at something set to epic music and dramatic yet entirely generic voice over. I thought it was bloody hilarious. It's like they didn't have enough interesting material to make a trailer with and just gave up.

I don't know if being ugly has anything to do with it. I'm not a dude, but I doubt women consider Murray, Ramis or Aykroyd attractive and I don't think they should be judged on that either if they fit the part. You argument about "4 women is sexist" could easily be turned around to "4 men is sexist", I don't think either are true. "Equal representation is required" is nonsense. It's an argument best left to "Nazi SJWs" you hate so much when they whine about wanting more women in movies. You're literally being the same as those "Nazis". You can have movies with all-male casts and with all-female casts. If "equal representation" is a requirement, the fact that there's no asians in any of these movies is horribly racist, for example. It's lunacy. You have a point about McCarthy, though. I'm not familiar with the other two and while I really like Wiig, McCarthy is hellishly annoying. But she had a couple of box office hits so I guess some people like her. I would have much rather seen Amy Poehler or Kulap Vilaysack or Kirsten Schaal or Heather Anna Campbell or any female comedian that is actually funny. That anything is being done with Ghostbusters at all is largely due to Dan Aykroyd. He's been trying to get another Ghostbusters made for a very long time now. After failing repeatedly to coax Bill back, and getting lukewarm at best for the most part interest from the other principles from the original movie, he began to push for a 'reboot'. The whole reboot or sequel thing is just in poor taste. Given Dan's resume over the last ~20 years, that's pretty much par for the course though. My money is on a colossal flop, with maybe a moderate success at most, and a mostly forgotten movie not long after. As huge a success as Ghostbusters was in the 80s, it didn't franchise well in the long run (no doubt in large part to the massive stink of a sequel), it's not going to start franchising well now after most if not all of the genius behind it is no longer behind it. That's concerning, I hope he wont play much of a part in the creative process. He's been increasingly insane and unfunny.

Let's try not to ignore that the exposition was also the work of a feminist, though. The extremists aren't the majority, even if some of them are in positions of power. -
They're rebooting it because making a sequel isn't viable. Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver are cool, but Dan Aykroyd isn't funny anymore, Bill Murray refuses to come back because he hated making the sequel, Harold Ramis is dead and Rick Moranis retired from acting. They could either do a straight reboot and be boring and retell the same thing with the same character but just worse, or they could do something interesting with it. I'm down with the idea of an all-ladies Ghostbusters, it's a good hook to get people interested. I'm tired of reboots just being the same as the original but without any of the charm.

Could Hollywood please wait until i'm dead or with Alzheimer before they start ruining the franchises I grew up with? If you didn't think Indiana Jones was already a bit ruined by Crystal Skull, I don't know what to think. Plus, the last report said they were going with Bradley Cooper. I find this a lot more fitting.

Either way, it shows the growing irrelevance of games journalism. -
Aw damn, I just posted this in the movie thread before reading this. Now I feel slow. Either way, he pretty much played Space Indiana Jones and that was the biggest movie of 2014.
-
Wow, sorry for the double post but I think this deserves a bump. Disney has reportedly tapped in Chris Pratt, who played Space Indiana Jones in the most succesful movie of the year, to take the the part of Regular Indiana Jones in their latest bid to get that franchise off the ground again.

I don't think you're his target audience. He makes videos for teens. It made him a millionaire, so I'm sure he's doing something right when he's screaming and cursing at games. -

An argument could be made that the reason these people dislike these things so much is because they're get more easily angered and therefore drawn into it? -

Torture discussion not relevant to this topic. Settle down. If you want to discuss torture, there's a perfectly fine thread about Guantanomo information in WoT. Either way, I don't know who you're talking about (it's not a topic I follow) and I've been known to take internet stuff way too seriously so if that guy ain't you cup of tea, we've got plenty of flavors. -
For those people who were worried the idea of "hybrid dinosaurs" would turn Jurassic Park silly, the design of the hybrid dinosaur has leaked and it's... another dinosaur, pretty much. Now we only have to worry about domesticated raptors turning it silly.
