  1. I already got a copy of Torchlight II for me mum thanks to a beautiful member who not only makes game-altering mods but is also an all around generous person.
  2. To be fair, the gaming industry treats everyone like crap. We literally have a higher turnaround than any of those industries because people can't handle the pressure. It is pretty draconian unless you work for an indie dev, in which case you're likely not getting ends to meet. As for "there isn't enough money to go around if everyone unionizes", I gotta admit Volourn is right on that one. The game industry is **** with budgets.
  3. Yes, but only because they're overexposed pieces of ****.
  4. Saying that gives other actors too much credit.
  5. I saw Torchlight II come by quite a few times. Anyone still have a copy of that? Not for me, but for my mom who is a cool gamer over 50 and loved Torchlight 1 after being thoroughly disappointed in Diablo 3. I'd very much appreciate it.
  6. Fair point. They might as well wait until the heat death of the universe.
  7. Seems exploitative towards actors! Actors have it better than literally every other cog in the machine. Have you ever met a bug-tester? No, you haven't! You know why? Because they are locked in a dank warehouse filled with cubicles right now and are not allowed to leave until they meet their quota. Seriously though, as far as I'm concerned they get to wait their turn, and that is after literally every other cog in the exploitative machine that is AAA gaming. Performance Matters indeed, I want it to run at a decent framerate before I want to listen to some stilted lines. [vent] To be fair, I may be just a teensy little bit biased since I have worked with actors a lot in a motion capture and sound recording studio (though for either indie or small licensed products) and literally every single one I have worked with was a complete and utter moron and it has left me with a completely irrational but aggressively burning hatred for their ilk. How can an actor not understand simple concepts like "walk here and stop on the mark"? The amount of sound mixing my friend has had to do because they're always talking in the wrong direction or not projecting their voice, and the amount of retargeting mocap data that I have had to do because maybe 5% of mocapped performance is even useable... Why weren't you following the required technical directions? "Because I'm an artist and my gut told me the performance was better this way!" ARGH! I always dread hearing we're going to be using actors, because it means you can throw your schedule in the trash and most of the time all it does is make your game worse. [/vent]
  8. Whelp, there goes the budget. I guess we'll drop ten features.
  9. Money. You can capitalize best on hype by having an opening night followed immediately by a first weekend. Unless you're Jimmy Cameron, you're going to be making the majority of your money those first couple of days.
  10. While I don't work for Obsidian (volunteer mod) I do have experience working on licensed games and I'm assuming every media release (such as a screenshot) needs to be approved by the license holder. In which case posting a screenshot becomes a bigger legal hassle than its worth.
  11. 4 Knights or Footman. Put 4 Archers behind them. Done, you have now succesfully defended against EVERYTHING.
  12. So wait, is the Swedish Chef a closeted transgender woman now?
  13. I'm always on the lookout for interesting projects like that but most teams never actually deliver anything and that's soured me on mods and indie projects a little.
  14. You're so helpful.
  15. Yeah, but then imagine it is work. I don't know, maybe I just live in the wrong area. Only companies around here make awful mobile games so that's what I end up working on most of the time. There's only so many low poly military dude walk cycles you can make before it stops being interesting.
  16. Hasn't worked for me personally, though it is sound advice. I keep starting side-projects for this purpose, but once I've kinda designed the ideas and what the product will be and such I run out of interest. I have a hard time doing it on anything other than whim nowadays. So what exactly did you want to do with graphic arts/games that you aren't getting in your job? At this point, I don't even know anymore. I always enjoy seeing a finished product, but the process of getting there... when I was learning new things, it was super interesting. Now that I know how everything works and can do it, it's just become a slog. I think I enjoyed learning about how to make a game more than I actually enjoy making a game. And that made me think I was really into game development. EDIT: I give up on the quoting system.
  17. I've never had V8, I don't think they carry it here. Is it like an energy drink made with tomatoes or something? Insurance Sales Agent, Pharmacist and Lawyer. Things that do, indeed, not appeal to me in the slightest. Hasn't worked for me personally, though it is sound advice. I keep starting side-projects for this purpose, but once I've kinda designed the ideas and what the product will be and such I run out of interest. I have a hard time doing it on anything other than whim nowadays.
  18. The addition of non-person is what makes that the most ridiculous. Non-person is an "inclusive" term for those who claim they were born as the wrong species or even item. Otherkin. Furries. Those who identify as a dragon, or a plant, or a ****ing hoover. Because that kind of person needs to be included, instead of sent to a goddamn institution.
  19. Sigh. I've been thinking a lot lately about changing careers. I'm tired of scraping by with freelance game animation jobs and having to supplement it with community management stuff (and somehow I don't mind volunteering here) and it's destroying my love for both animation and video games. But there's not much I have very much interest in other than graphic design stuff. I enjoy writing, but there's no real future in that unless you get lucky. And I'm interested in psychology, but I'd have to get another full education for that and I'm still in the goddamn school system to finally finish my multimedia bachelor. So I've been doing things like aptitude tests and personality tests to see if I can find something else. But pretty much every single one gives me the following aptitudes: 1. Graphic Designer 2. Psychologist/Therapist 3. Writer/Editor
  20. The thing about trigger warnings is that, and I hate to say this because I am aware of how ridiculous it sounds and I wouldn't say it if I hadn't experienced it first-hand, there are literally roaming bands of SJWs on the internet scanning websites with user created content to yell at creators about how they have to add trigger warnings to material or they will be reported to whatever site it is and that they're awful people who should die in a fire because they didn't do it in the first place. DeviantArt among others is especially rampant of this, but I saw this happen to someone, then googled some user names and found the same people (possibly person with multiple accounts) do the exact same things on sites such as FanFiction.net. I don't consider it much of a problem because it's easy to ignore them, but the call to make this an official rule on the internet instead of a courtesy extended by some is annoying and frankly concerning because it shows the current generations' lack of ability to deal with real world issues. Because that's what it is. "This piece of art contains a real world issue, be warned." Personally, I like to post counter warnings. "Trigger warning: This comment section contains toxic harrassment by evil people." But this is a fairly pointless post, since all it really says is "gosh, those people are really, really annoying". Which is what most of the indignation in these threads has been the last couple of months. Oh look, someone posted something nasty on twitter. Man, those people are really, really annoying. Look at this dumb SJW. Their opinions are so dumb, lawl. Also, dimorphodons. Whenever someone starts whining about dimorphism now I'm going to post pictures of dimorphodons.
  21. Fooled me four times, shame on you. Fooled me five times, shame on me. I'm not coming back after that Wild West schtick they pulled in Tremors 4.
  22. Oh ****, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to spoil that. I just thought he came back in the first episode already.
  23. Don't feel bad about chickening out on Amnesia. Despite everyone saying they finished it, the devs said Amnesia had something like a 5% completion rate.
  24. It's Nick, isn't it? Nick is not impressed by your insults. (I hate Nick too.)
