Character progression in CRPGs
Shadowstrider replied to Diogo Ribeiro's topic in Computer and Console
The stats have to be shown to you in one way or another. If you're strength training, your strength goes up; whether that is shown on your character model or a numbered scale. Whats the difference? -
I'm going with fanboitis, and Gothic is hardly a masterpiece.

Creating your own PnP rules system
Shadowstrider replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Why do you need to tally the XP after every battle? Why not at the end of every session? Is it because you want to allow the option for skills to improve during the session? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Generally there is not a lot of combat during a session. However, yes I do allow players to improve, or train their skills immediately following a battle. In the system I developed, once a skill reaches a certain interval the players are allowed to take on new abilities associated with the skill. Abilities can improve the skill rating, grant synergy bonuses to other skills, improve a combat manuever, or a slew of other things that can drastically change a character. -
Jade Empire Is A Big Fat Financial Failure!!!
Shadowstrider replied to Volourn's topic in Computer and Console
Jade Empire's mild financial success is a result of BioWare's audience draw, not its own merit. O RLY? Yes. Yes, really. -
Jade Empire Is A Big Fat Financial Failure!!!
Shadowstrider replied to Volourn's topic in Computer and Console
Seriously, whatever drug you're on and have been on for the past, say 5 years, stop taking it. Your memory is terrible. Icewind Dale II is not my favorite RPG. I've never claimed it was. Not even sure where you'd get such a ludicrous idea. What proof? Jade Empire may have sold a million units, maybe more, maybe less. It is still among the most mediocre games ever released. It isn't bad, it isn't good, it just is. Thank god for Blockbuster, though, they saved me $45. Rental for the win. -
Jade Empire Is A Big Fat Financial Failure!!!
Shadowstrider replied to Volourn's topic in Computer and Console
Yes, I am clearly biased against competitors, and want them all to fail... as evidenced by my supporting Obsidian, posting on their boards, and planning to make a rather large series of modules using NWN2. I'm interested in Mass Effect and Dragon Age (albeit not much interest in Dragon Age), but I would, obviously, like nothing more than these to fail. JE had lackluster gameplay, lackluster story, lackluster RP, and a slew of other mediocre elements to the game. The game's sales reflect this. Mediocrity, they name is Jade Empire. -
Jade Empire Is A Big Fat Financial Failure!!!
Shadowstrider replied to Volourn's topic in Computer and Console
That article has no real relevence to whether or not Jade Empire was a financial success or not. It mentions it in passing, the article is about original IPs getting made when there is so much capital at risk. Yes, it does call JE a success, but thats an editorial and proves nothing. I could make an editorial on why it was a tremendous flop. -
Happy birthday... no, I will not make out with you.
-
But on the other hand, if you forget her birthday, run over her cat, insult her friends, get her the wrong present or shout out another womans name in your sleep, you can be fairly cirtain it wont be for a little while. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thats not true. Those can all be cancelled out by it being my birthday, getting her a dog (she hates cats), reminding her of the time she gpt pissed off at her own friend, or... uhh... well not that last one... Besides, I always know it will be soon.

I personally know my girlfriend, doesn't mean I know when I'm gonna get laid next (self pwnt). At anyrate, it doesn't matter. The trailer is still pretty much "on track" with what the cool kids at school are saying.
-
Spring ends in late June, which is what all the cool people were penciling in as NWN2's release. Seems on track, to me, unless they mean April.

Slick Rick! Outcast! Danger Doom. Jurassic 5. Mos Def (On occasion). Run DMC. Jay-Z. Sometimes, albeit it rarely, I like to listen to Wu-Tang Clan or Notorious B.I.G. Slick Rick would be one of the few who has regular playtime on my stereo. More of a rock guy.

The game is definitely fun fun old-skool shoot-em up.

No, not some report your boss expects you to have on his desk by monday. TPS = Third-Person Shooter. http://www.shadowgroundsgame.com/en/demo.html Free demo, I like it a lot. Not the best game I've ever played, but it is still enjoyable. The opening cinematic is pretty lame, and watching it I expected the game to suck. Then the game itself kicks in, and it is fun. A lot of fun. The controls aren't perfect, but you can remap them. At first, I was not particularly fond of the combat, I thought I had to move the mouse directly over my enemy to hit them, and because they run so damn fast it seemed impossible. I learned that you don't have to mouse directly over the creature, just in their direction and it'd hit 'em. Anyway, give the demo a try. Tell me what you think. Or else.

Some Thoughts on Partisan Argument Patterns
Shadowstrider replied to Azarkon's topic in Way Off-Topic
No it isn't. This is only the case when people refuse to listen to reason. There have been plenty of debates where I've convinced people or people have convinced me about a situation. Emphasis added. If debates never solve anything, then why do they eventually come up with something that's rather good? *Looks left, looks right.* Debates aren't the problem, the obstinance of people is the problem. -

If the violent protesters were protesting to prove that Muslims aren't violent, there would have been irony. But they weren't, as I wrote above. You've misunderstood why both moderates and extremists were protesting. I'd suggest you reflect on the implications of perceiving irony where you claim to, but I certainly don't intend to debate with you if you insult me. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> '_; I hurt your feelings. I'm still baffled over the percieved insult, but its not hard to see why you wouldn't want to continue debating the matter. None-the-less, a cartoon protrays Islam's prophet with a bomb in his turban. The insinuation is clear; Islam was bred and violence, and carries it with it. Muslims are outraged! How dare they make such a cartoon! What do they do? Start fires, overturn cars, and cause people to hide in order to avoid being publically humiliated or killed. You can try to deflect the issue all you want. Irony is there, despite your trying to dissolve the issue at hand into the millions of underlying concerns. Do hindu protest everytime there is a McDonalds comercial on the air? It glorifies the death of a sacred animal. Or Burger King? Hardees? Do christians protest everytime someone is depicted as Jesus? Just this year a plethora of people have been iconified using images which remind evoke images of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. You can defend the violent actions all you want, with your psuedo-intellectual excuses. The matter at hand is absurd and ludicrous. You're trying to deflect the issue into one of inequality, when in reality people are being killed and extreme acts of violence have been inspired by cartoons, many of which depict muslims as violent. Why is it acceptable for muslims to "protest," but not hindu or christians? If a bunch of christians were burning down buildings because Kanye West was depicted as Jesus, people here would take cheap shots about religious fanatics and simply dismissed as nuts. Somehow, though, it is "okay" for these muslims to "protest." Clearly the burning buildings were sacrificed willingly to keep the "peaceful protesters" warm at night on those cold nights. There is no double-standard, though. None at all.

Do you consider video games as art?
Shadowstrider replied to Morgoth's topic in Computer and Console
No. Yes. Since pro wrestling is scripted it could be considered art. Someone has to come up with creative concepts behind the storylines. Wrestlers are really nothing but buff actors. Yes, the action is real, but the outcome and storylines are scripted by a writer. No. No. Edit: Yes, if it is an original piece. (sorry I didn't explain). If it is based entirely on factual history then no. It just has to be creative, rather than based on reality. I wouldn't call a biography of Rowdy Roddy Piper art, because it would tell the tale of his real life. If it told the tale of his wrestling saga, then yes. I guess I am saying fiction = art. I disagree with this assesment. Commercializing something doesn't make it any less art, it just makes someone a good salesmen.
