I have to say that your example perfectly illustrates MY point that the terrs work with what they've got handy. Osama bin Laden was pissed that he didn't have the opportunity to shoot people any more, so he made up the notion that the USA being in Saudi Arabia to reverse the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait somehow proved they - and the House of Saud - had to be stopped. The USA acted legally, and proprotionately and all the good stuff the UN is supposed to stand for. International coalition etc etc. It didn't make any ****ing difference once it had passed through the propaganda lense of one spoiled rich kid, and into the ears of a bazillion angry young fascists.

EDIT: Two points 1) Big grievances do not affect the terrorist organisation directly, but they can have a serious impact through removing or reinforcing public support. Case in point is the Weather Underground Organisation. They mobilised during the anti_vietnam period in the USA. When the USA left the war a vast amount of support evaporated, because of the end of the draft and the whole subculture that draft dodging generated. The Palestinian cause probably does provide much pan-arabian credibility. It also gives cover from many 'useful fools' in Europe. 2) Good or bad causes that indulge in terrorism or direct action, attract arseholes. once embedded they tend to take over. Just a quick one. Figure several of youse will weigh in, in due course. Intent Replicate the Board Game of Space Hulk. A good game, but not terribly exciting intent. 7/10 Single Player experience Played 5 missions in sequence, no need for replays. Most mechanics explained as they arose, all very workmanlike. 7/10 Multiplayer Signing up for it multiplayer was relatively easy. But you have to use an email address to find friends, which is a bit crap. Currently there is no support for using Steam to hookup. However, setup was fast and going head to head was definitely interesting. 9/10 Quirks Few surprises so far. Cracking a marine defensive line is more fun than I thought it would be. 8/10

Recommmend as above, but advise your boss that there is a tarsier on her shoulder. This should get you a night off at least.

You make a valid point about negotiation, Rosti. I haven't been tracking that aspect to be frank. Having said that, do you get the feeling that the Brotherhood want to negotiate? Their actions seem to indicate that they think they re-mobilise in the streets and bring down the government. Again. From tehir pperspective, they have a lot to lose by retiring peacefully. Pretty embrassing to take power and then get booted by popular protest. Better to come back in by the same method, and clamp down hard.

I'm not really sure we wouldn't have muslim terrorists. Terrorism is a product of world war two, and the communist 'revolutionary' model. Bulk violence in the name of Islam isn't anything new to the 20th century, either. Ever heard of the 'mad mullah'? I had this discussion with Frank Gardner - who I thought was very decent to take the time to do so considering he'd only recently been shot - and he conceded that it's important to distinguish between a rationale and a cause. Palestine is just how these fellahs choose to mobilise. If it wasn't that it would be something else. Ceuta-Mellila, or Playboy, or sausage rolls, or (more likely) the plight of 'ze workers'.
