  1. Along with what Avenger said, Obsidian had a real chance to change the story at that point. A toss up between Shandra or Jerro, or perhaps being able to pull out both. I never like being totally railroaded in RPG's without a choice. On top of that, my favourite character getting killed....didn't do much for the motivation after having that permadeath forced on me.
  2. I disagree. Troika always had a smaller team than most. And look at the size of the Torment team, much smaller team than most newer games. And you don't need a publisher to make a game, if you have enough capital or skills to make one. There are plenty of indy devs out there making RPG's right now. Also, by selling without a middle man or publisher, virtually all profit goes directly to the company, therefore needing less copies sold in order to make a decent profit. I also would have thought some of these development studios would have the capital and experience to make a lesser budget game to cater for the niche market. Bioware has surely had enough clout to do this for years by using a team of 10-15 members and using older tech. The problem is many companies are only interested in blockbusters, and never take any chances whatsoever.
  3. I voted slightly, though I agree with people that state 'I didn't really expect anything else'. The games they have made so far have some quite excellent writing, but are sadly rushed and are usually ripoffs of Bioware games. The Alien game might be something decent, though having console influence doesn't impress me, apart from the fact that it should run on older PCs by the time it gets here. And of course the guy in charge of the Alien game seems to know how a good RPG should be made, however.... I believe that any dev studio that relies on publisher money today is hamstrung from the get go. They are given orders: It will be real time combat. It will have graphics ahead of substance. It will appeal to as big an audience as can be found (Regardless of the genre's audience tastes)..... If you want some of the good old stuff, then the indy devs are the only place to look now, and thats where I am heading. There are several decent sounding RPG's on the horizon in this area. Can't wait. Though I will still keep an eye on Obsidian games. They are the only 'edible' RPG's now on the market when it comes to major Developer titles to my knowledge.
  4. Definately did a great job with Shandra, however for me she is my favourite character for this game. And then they had her story killed while I stand there.....Raise dead spell at the ready.... Silly, very silly. If I want a JRPG, I know where to get one.
  5. Not this debate AGAIN! How about 'Space Opera'?
  6. Would be nice if it was a digital river download. I don't like the whole 'Big Daddy says give me your keynumber now! or you cannot play' crap. Pity, looks like it could be cool.
  7. What difficulty are you playing on Tigranes? Maybe the AI gets a little more adventurous at a higher level (I hope). <_<
  8. That fast colonising thing sounds like it blows. Though I don't mind the historical events open to whoever gets the pre requisites. Can Greece be reformed? Or the ERE?
  9. Wow, some people are now putting Fallout into the Fantasy area? It seems every RPG is now fantasy except Teudogar and the alliance with Rome....oh, thats right, thats fantasy too because you can change history! Postmodernism has won....
  10. How is star wars not science fiction? Edit: Kaftan beat me to it
  11. I would call Starwars, Fallout, etc "Science Fiction". The Swords and sorcery, etc, are "Fantasy" Therefore, give me more Science Fiction at the moment please. I like both, but Fantasy has had the hard runs. Hopefully something nice and new in the Science fiction area.
  12. What is a good ending though? Who defines it? One person might say the ending of X is ****, while another sobs, and calls "Encore! Encore!!2##!!"
  13. alanschu: Exactly. In SH3 it starts off with you being able to sit amongst a convoy at night, having a gunnery duck shoot, and then, as the war progresses (and you have pulled off all the Das Boot and Gunther Prien escapades you wanted to) the Allies become deadlier and deadlier to the point of near insanity. My channel dash in 1944 was an unforgettable piece of foolish excitement. I made it sure, but afterwards it was a slow, deadly limp around the top of Britain in order to get back home. Oh, I managed to sink an armed trawler during that run.
  14. They aren't. A lot of games are made for short attention span players. Hear hear!
  15. I am looking forward to this mod more than virtually all the games coming up. Irony central.
  16. Normally I would be joining in with you with rejoicing. But the thought of having maybe 2 years of challenge isn't floating my boat (no pun intended). The Japs had no chance against the US submarines for most of the war, so the game will start of slightly hard (more frustrating due to the American torpedoes that didn't work for about a year) and end up being a cake walk beyond belief. Maybe this game will include fantasy Japanese robots, or giant sub hunting lizards.
  17. What? Are you blind? Where did I call you a fanboy? Read the words please. They are connected to you claiming that what one side says is "Not evidence" and "Whining". Now, by the inference made here you would have to admit that; a)Neither party is able to give us "Hard" evidence, as in photocopies, signed docos, or whatever it is you are claiming constitutes evidence. So, in this regard, since the Trekkies have said one thing and are "Dubious Whiners" Bethesda saying something must mean "Hard evidence". Edit: As for me, I remember when Bethesda banned RPG Codex, apparently for "Naughty links" being there. The reason that this is bull**** is easy to see, as they even had devs going there for ages and then suddenly, when the Codex started to hammer Oblivion, a blackban came out in force. Thats evidence enough for me.
  18. Of course Volourn. The fan site says one thing = Lies Bethesda says one thing = Truth Yes, remembering the Oblivion hype lies, I TOTALLY agree with you mate
  19. Awesome! Finally they are catching up to Fallouts talking heads!!! Well, guess this cannot hurt, as long as this fluff doesn't take developer time away from game content.
  20. Crashgirl, SS waded into the discussion himself by refuting my claim. That is the way the deal went down. So far he has merely said "Bethesda doesn't do that!" then hides behind the old "official" tag when it comes to backing up his play. Monday will come and go. Silence. Time goes on. The usual.
  21. Bethesda can keep their "GTA: Level scaling fantasy" all to themselves. Maybe one day they will make another RPG. Ooops....I am sorry if this comment gets this site blacklisted :'(
  22. Yes, you are correct there Volourn. I remember that Troika had 12 (roughly) making their games, next to the megacompanies around, but they did have publisher backing. After reading about the Aliens RPG, I will have to add it to the list as long as it is given enough time to be fully worked on and fleshed out. It will be interesting to see what Sawyer can do having a lead position. His ideas have always been pretty good.
  23. What? A PC RPG? Totally designed by Sawyer? (Obviously with some stupid input by marketers granted) I must go and check the news pages.
  24. Roleplayer, I don't mind the smalltime games developers. I bought Teudogar and the alliance with rome, and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the best roleplaying experiences on a pc I have had since Arcanum. Vampire Bloodlines was ok as well, but I prefer the Isometric RPG personally. It seems the only way to get Isometric RPGs, with an oldschool combat system similar to the Fallout games is buying independent games (I do not like the spiderweb games though, they bore me to death). I will check out the Star Fox game you mentioned. Might be something I am interested in. Edit: Another game that I have enjoyed playing around with is Dwarf Fortress. Its an ASCII game, but so full of options and gameplay that it leaves many large studio's games by the wayside. Google it and check it out. It does take some getting used to however.
  25. Some guy at RPG Codex is making an RPG. Age of Decadence I think its called. If it lives up to the hype, then I will be snapping it up. Dhargul, another smalltime RPG. Some German dude is making that. GTA4, if it comes out on PC. Maybe Dragons Age, though Baldurs gate 2 was the last Bioware game I actually enjoyed. Thats a long time ago now " I have become quite cynical about games for a while now. I am not exactly impressed with many of the latest offerings that I thought would be brilliant. Medieval total war 2 was a bug ridden letdown, as was Gothic 3 (Though it pretty good with the latest patch). Oblivion was watered down rubbish (So Fallout 3 has been written off in my mind). Neverwinter nights 2 is ok, but nothing spectacular. It desperately needed more time in the workshop, and could have had more time spent on making the combat engine a little more tactical. It is better than Nwn1 at least. Basically the beta stage of new games has largely turned me off buying them straight away. At the moment Europa Universalis 3 is released, yet I have not bought it. Why? Because I have seen that it still needs patches (Apparently). No more beta testing for me. I prefer to wait now until its patched to the ninth degree. Oh, X3 is finally up to scratch! This is what I mean with my last paragraph. A game that comes out and 2 years later is 'finished'.
