Hmm, When are you going lead design (From start to finish) a PC RPG then Sawyer? Sounds like you have an idea of what makes a decent RPG. Edit: I must say I enjoyed the combat model in the Fallout games. I am not sure I know what you mean by 'Briskly' but I can understand where you are coming from in a large scale encounter. It wasn't hellish for me, but Adytown and the regulators could get a little frustrating, though battles of this magnitude were at a minimum. Excellent with smaller battles though.

And what is good about Oblivion Crashgirl? The random dungeons of bread and apple chests? The sheer lack of quests that Morrowind had? The ability to be everything in the game? The 'Oblivion' areas that were all the same? I could mention many more things that turned me off the game in a short space of time, but I think you get the drift. In its defence, I will say its a decent FPS with stats. It has nice graphics. Its combat engine is good for an action game. I would like to know, in your opinion, why its a great game. What parts made it brilliant? How did it trump its predesessor and what were the improvements?

Do you like WW2 grand strategy naval wargames?
Girias_Solo replied to Llyranor's topic in Computer and Console
Can the player take over one area of the allied war effort? Lets say I only wanted to be the Aussies, or US, or Far east, China, etc. Can the AI handle the rest? Or is it the entire Allied effort? Does Japan come with a similar system? China front, south pacific, etc? I could see myself enjoying the game for a time, but it might be a massive management headache doing every bit of the planning, especially for one commander. -
The Escapist: The Rise and Fall of Troika
Girias_Solo replied to Morgoth's topic in Computer and Console
True enough. I should have said Magic candle, Wasteland, etc. There were many dungeon hacks back in those days indeed. There were also many good CRPG's. There were quite a few released each year back in those days. -

Tell me, what is the AI like? The reason I never bought this game was because I kept reading how **** the AI was on the matrix forums, and that you basicly had to play as the Japanese to have a challenge. True or false? What can the AI do? How would you rate it? I have heard good things about Birth of America, so any wargamers might like to pop over to matrix and check it out. -
I hear you, but I think marketing it to westerners might be the obstacle that dissuades them. China isn't as easy to sell as Japanese Samurai after all. Regarding 1914 it could be interesting - for a while. Battles were very repetitive and very rarely decisive, and as we know the whole war was a grind for the most part. I say nay. I would like to see something set in the early modern period, wouldn't mind Napoleon at all but preferably something starting in the 1400s or 1500s. I guess I'll have EU3 for that, but I want to play as SWEDEN! I'm such a patriotic dork... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sweden was involved in the Napoleonic wars....a little anyway. I agree that Total war 1914 would be tragic. First world war makes a decent overall strat game, or an excellent squad tactics game (The 'over the top' warfare was NOT what made up many of the battles of WW1. Lots of skirmishing, raiding, etc). I tried playing MTW2, but it has bored me to death. Its buggy, easy as ****, and its a retread! How they screwed up a retread is beyond me. Its like CA took the unpatched Rome total war (which I can sorta forgive because it was a new engine) and used it as the template, instead of the patched up Barbarian invasion. In any case, EB has soured my liking for the simplistic TW games....Everytime I play the vanilla versions, I just want to put EB back on the screen.

The Escapist: The Rise and Fall of Troika
Girias_Solo replied to Morgoth's topic in Computer and Console
Eh, Troika were in the wrong age. I love their games to bits, but their time was in the past. Instead of interactive fiction where you fight and then watch a movie (like many RPG's today) they made games you could actually role play. Reading/No voice overs/choices killed them in this day and age of ritelin, much like Garriott et al. Back in the late 80's, early 90's they would have been numero uno in the CRPG world. I know the majority do not like this, but as a pen and paper player, their games were the best I have played to date, bugs or no. Especially Arcanum. Damn I wish they had created a detailed TBC system like Fallout instead of the hackneyed half RT half TB that they did. TOEE was a little weak though. Very stupid to agree to sign on for 1 and a half years for a CRPG of today. It takes at least 2 years to create a half decent, yet still buggy as crap, CRPG with todays bells and whistles. And this with a bigger team. Thank god for Co8 and their work. -
Well, I just finished playing NWN2, it was ok except for the bugs. Before that played Gothic 3, not bad if not for the bugs. And now all I want to do is play Medieval Total war 2, but the bugs have destroyed my experience. So "Bugs" is the main theme that my playing has degenerated into in the past few years.....Or perhaps "Bug dodging" could be a better way of describing it. Man, am I sick of playing with bugs all the damn time now.

Does Obsidian intend to make an RPG like FO?
Girias_Solo replied to roshan's topic in Computer and Console
It was a sad day when RPG's had to be sold to the 'mainstream' in order to be viable.....Yes indeed. Wonder what year this was.... Hopefully some Indy people will make a studio that caters to these needs. They could use yesterdays engines, and mix them with todays Role playing and mechanics..... But unless bigger companies learn how to make decent RPG's, with ok graphics that DO NOT need to be sold to every gamer and his dog, then I am afraid that indies are where its at. Spend some time and get addicted to this if you want to know what ambition is. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ Not strictly an RPG, but when you check out what can be done, and learn how to play it, you will agree with me that no AAA title could ever have that much gameplay. Yes, it was a sad day when RPG's had to sell to the 'mainstream' in order to be viable..... -
Just finished the game using the 1.09 patch. All up, it was actually the best game I have played for a few years at least. The lack of dialogue and interaction with the old buddies was a let down, and the combat system was not as good as 1 and 2, but it still has the Gothic feeling, along with some really great exploration and choices to be made. Its not an easy game, kind of. I guess it could be classified as hard for todays gamers, but it was fairly easy for me, mostly. The storyline was pretty good, though the AI, especially the humanoids need some serious work. Seeing a Hunter brag about his ability, then watching him get owned by one wolf was amusing the first time. Apparently PB is working on this aspect in the next super patch. I am not here to make anyone else enjoy the game, Just saying that to me its a winner. If only the characters had some more dialogue. I guess this is one of those infernal choices of the new computer age. Have a Giant game with less dialogue or a smaller, tighter game like G2 with more individual dialogue, but less people to talk to. This has only been a problem since voice acting became mandatory in games, but Gothic has always had this so, thats the way it goes. So there you go. Best game to me since Gothic 2, Vampire Bloodlines and Arcanum graced my PC.

I always knew they had another hit in them...

Thou callest Old? How dare Thee! I shalt smite thee back to whence you came, Knave! I can also bring up Planescape Torment, that used Planes speak. Berk!. :D Volourn: It is a 'different' thing to complain about though, instead of the graphics (though he does complain about that as well).

You mean like Fallout 2? Thats the only game I remember having the 'Slam Dunk!' monika attached to it.

Anyone know if NWN2 will be prepatched to the DVD by the time it gets to Australia on the 16th? Or will it just take that bloody long to get here?

NWN2: Major disappointment - Character creation
Girias_Solo replied to Riftworm's topic in Computer and Console
Its not coming out till the 16th here. Its wonderful living in the arse end of the earth. -
The only problem with Mad Max is that the movie industry would put contraints on the devs who were making it. Better if they made up a Mad Max type of their own and then do what they want with him. The Fallout setting as far as I know goes something like this: Pulp 50's Post Nuclear setting in the US, based in an alternate reality where vacuum tubes, cassette tapes, and so on went forward, while the silocone chip was never invented. Thus CD's etc also never existed. Fallout 2 butchered this scene somewhat, but was still an enjoyable game, with some better mechanics.

And now horse join the mix. Can some of you please tell me just what it is you believe are the most important parts to you in NWN2? I need to try and understand what things were in your head as you fantacised about this game for so many months. So far I am getting: Lots of different head, hair, etc styles. Rideable horse (that do nothing else). Please enlighten me, because it seems that my old head cannot understand the new crop of Role players too well If it was destructive bugs, soulless gameplay, crappy party system, poor roleplaying, I would be swinging the axe along with the rest of you (And I may well do if it turns out that way). -

Volourn, I said Horses that were not Oblivionised Horses. You know, horse you could fight on? charge with? like Mount and blade? Not something you had to dismount from (lol) and then attack. -

Girias_Solo replied to Riftworm's topic in Computer and Console
How would they have implemented Horses? Can you explain in detail how you would have put horses into NWN2 without turning them into the crap that was Oblivion horses? As for graphics, even the first poster, when he posted at the Bioboards, admits that the graphics of the characters are better besides the heads (Though what he means by this I am not sure, when thinking about the NWN1 heads). Possibilities with what? And there you go with 'game'. Even though the GAME hasn't been talked about yet. -
Now that I can agree with, totally. At heart, I feel the same way you do. Except even with the "mythos", I have already written it off. The only reason I sorta went off earlier was because of everyone thinking it was a grand idea to butcher a great gaming system. Van Buren was my last hope as well. Fallout is gone. Some indy title may capture the spirit one day (As Fallout captured the Wasteland spirit) but for now, its spinoff time. Doesn't hurt to vent now and again though

NWN2: Major disappointment - Character creation
Girias_Solo replied to Riftworm's topic in Computer and Console
If its off topic to comment about the game itself, fair enough. I take back that part of my post. As far as I could see, it is a titled post claiming that NWN2 sucks. Honestly though, I did believe that a large part of the posters here didn't think that having an Oblivion face creator was the height of RPG goodness. So far, we have one kid from Israel to go with about the character creation of NWN2. Hardly an authority to run with IMHO. So far we know that it has more options than NWN1. It doesn't have the 2D portraits. It has more options however, and because the first poster has a poor graphics card, this probably wouldn't help matters either in the face stakes. NWN1 did have 2 body types, and a very poor tattoo system. So far 'apparently' this NWN2 doesn't have either. Whether this stops you buying the game, who can say. I will bow out of this one though. If graphics of a characters head are the focus of the sadness in this one, I won't last long. -

Girias_Solo replied to Riftworm's topic in Computer and Console
Who gives a crap? Listen to yourselves, your carrying on about some cosmetic trash. WHAT ABOUT THE GAME? Did any of you actually ask the first poster what the game is like? Do any of you care? or is having lovely blue eyes, perhaps a nice filigree necklace more important? No wonder the RPG scene has been going to hell in a handbasket for years. My apologies to anyone here who actually didn't start crying about this inane thing during this thread. -

Wow, when I read this thread on the Bio boards I thought 'what a bunch of losers caring about such an anal part of an RPG'. I certainly didn't expect it to be worse here Maybe this time, instead of extra faces or some garbage like that, the GAME will be good. Imagine that! -
FOT is not an RPG either. Many fans don't blast it as much as you seem to think, they don't really think about it at all actually.
