Now reading The Overton Window by Glen Beck and Martin Eden by Jack London
  2. I got home from a bad day at work and found another rejection letter for my manuscript in the mail. Oh well. I think tonight I'm going to take a bottle of bourbon, a bowl of ice, a single glass, and my XM radio on channel 13 and sit on my porch and get good an truly drunk. I've got a case of Sam Adams and a bottle of Knob Creek, that should get the job done. By they way, please allow me to apologize now for anything I might post later tonight... I'm sorry.
  3. Hello everyone, it's been a while since I dropped by. I just got home from a date, it was nice but no big deal. I finished the book I've been working on but so far have had no luck even getting a publisher to bite on more than a sample. I'm looking into self-publishing but I don't know if I want to invest that kind of money into a real long shot like this. I'll keep trying though. I never did that for the money anyway. Now I'm going to pour a highball of Knob Creek on the rocks and go sit on my porch. Maybe the coyotes will start up tonight, i have not heard them in a long time.
  4. Dear Monte, I'm trying to design a packet microwave transport system for a customer in Florida but that state has rather unreasonable wind loading requirements for monople towers and even the addition of a forty kilogram package and antenna is causing leasing and regulatory compliance issues on their towers. I've worked out a plan to replace the RF coax lines with a brightcell system (fiberoptic connections from the mux in the base station to an integrated RF transciever mounted with the antenna on the tower). This will require reinforcing the mounting arms of the brackets but eliminates the need to reinforce the monople structure since it also eliminates the weight of the waveguide. The only problem is the customer does not want to spend the money on britecell infrastructure and it opting to go with reinforcing the whole tower. My question is, how do I deal with the cost overruns associated with the reinforcement since this project has a hard budget? I have to cut some $20k in our costs to come in under budget, but still make a Dec 31 deadline. Help me please! I keep drinking but this problem will not go away.
  5. We like soccer, as an international competition at least. The World Cup matches have had good ratings considering the time of day they are on. What we really don't go for is professional league soccer like the MLS or any of it's predecessors. When team USA is playing though, it does get attention. If we get into the final round or even (gasp) the championsip match it will get ratings that will make any Super Bowl proud. BTW, only around 65% of Major League Baseball players are from the USA. We get a lot of players from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, South Africa, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Venezuela, etc.
  6. Very sad indeed. We have all lost a friend we did not even really know we had. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Ironically it would have irritated him to no end to have read me saying that! We'll miss you Sand.
  7. I'm going to try to make one. I restored an sold an old 1960's Pepsi machine last year, I think I can do this. I'll start looking over Craigslist and Ebay for an old machine.
  8. If I might make a suggestion, you should give Knob Creek or Woodford Reserve a taste. They are a bit pricier than the two you mentioned but... you do get what you pay for. Knob Creek is dark and rich and has a faint taste of molassas, Woodford is light and has a sweet aftertaste, kinda fruity. Knob creek runs about 28 bucks a liter, Woodford is about $40. But they are good enough you'd give up scotch for them. It's funny, I find as I get older I'd rather have less of the good stuff than lots of the rotgut like Jim Beam.
  9. I got an amazon order today. Six books, three new CDs, Battlestar Galatica Season 4, and a new computer game. Plus I bought a case of Rolling Rock today. I'd say my evening is booked solid!
  10. Sounds like you are feeling better. Thats is great,.
  11. I...MUST...have this machine!
  12. I've been coming to this board less and less because the discussions are repetitive and pretty tiresome. Plus there are only like six people posting here now and a dozen or so alts. But I came back today and what do I find, LoF has started yet another communisim thread. Ho hum. I'm sure the conversation will be at least as scintillating as the last several dozen. This is like internet deja vu.
  13. That's funny! If I had an alt on this forum, it would be a rape-happy Ayn Rand character. Hmmmm, I can think of a few here who meet that criteria. Maybe you already HAVE done that....
  14. I cut the grass this morning, worked on the camaro this afternoon (no not running yet but getting close). Right now I'm sitting at ,y computer contemplating going up to the VFW for dinner and drinks (not in that order) and maybe to Morries (local bar) for a few pitchers and a few games of pool.
  15. From Time Magazine Columnist Tom Bevan: It's not enough to be sent home for wearing a shirt with an American flag to an American school, they are now expected to f*****g APOLOGIZE for it??? I suddenly feel the need to go buy more guns.
  16. The editorial from todays Washinton Times: Isn't it odd these kids were forced to leave a school that had an American flag flying out front for wearing A GODDAMNED AMERICAN FLAG!? Remember what I said about the stupid, sick, limp-wristed liberal self hate that is infecting public officials like some kind of vile disease? I was right.
  17. No I would not rank them in the same category as Rosa Parks, but I would not dismiss the analogy all together either. But you are right, the cause may be right but the champions and forum is wrong. But this whole stupid mess could also have been avoided by the school not celebrated a faux "holiday" concoted entirely to sell beer and tequila yhay passes without notice in the very country it applies to.
  18. am tempted to use the eye-roll gif. so, you think it were pure coincidence that the group o' kids wore clothes bearing American flags on cinco de mayo... and these kids were no doubt complete surprised at the negative reaction such garb engendered in their peers. okie dokie. look, as we noted already, the hispanic kids shoulda' ignored. the jerky kids with the American flags were doing to be contrary, but that not mean that the hispanic kids should necessarily rise to take the bait. if you is doing to be contrary, is hard to act surprised and innocent when your target demo gets riled, no? is there anything objective wrong with wearing an American flag tee-shirt on cinco de mayo. heck no... hey, you know what is even More unfair? if a handful o' hispanic kids had worn clothes with the American flags emblazoned one 'em there might not have been any problem at all. the Irish example ain't really applicable is it? as you already noted, "the Irish don't complain." wear an American tee-shirt in Boston on St Paddy's day in 2010 and it is unlikely to bother anyone. 'course what if the political climate 'tween the U.S. and Irish immigrants were different... what if tensions 'tween US govt. and Irish immigrants were high and certain States were enacting legislation targeted directly at Irish immigrants? what if it we had a flashback to the 1800's, and even American born Irish folks were feeling (and sometimes treated) like second class citizens? compare to Irish doesn't work, because as you already noted, the Irish folks wouldn't be likely to get mad if boo and his pals wore American flags on St. Paddy's Day. agree or disagree with hispanic students being Justified in their displeasure at seeing a group o' kids wearing American flags on cinco de mayo? that is a different query. if you does to because you is hopeful that target group A gets cheesed, and your target goes ahead and gets angry... *shrug* HA! Good Fun! I dunno Grmonir, maybe what those kids did was right an necassary. Tensions are rising not falling, ignoring it has done no good. Perhaps confrontation is exactly what is needed now. It is probably inevitable anyway and the longer it is in coming the more violent it is like to be. If we get it over with now perhaps it can be done peacefully. The Irish example really does not work because they were here LEGALLY, and the current immigation contorversy is what to do about ILLEGAL immigrants (despite the attempts of some to obfuscate by blurring the lines between the two). Also, America of 2010 would not tolerate the treatment of another people the way the did the Irish in the late 1800s. Latinos are not treated that way at all.
  19. Isn't that what Killian was saying a few months ago...? No, he thinks red states and blue states are going to fight. That will never happen because there is no such thing. This situation is a little more dangerous.
  20. Just a thought, but if an American kid, wearing a shirt with and American flag, to and American school, on American soil can not be expected to be safe then we are getting real close to civil war.
  21. The act itself was pretty inconsequential, but the symoblisim was huge. And it was noticed in a big way.
  22. This is a very, very, VERY bad idea. Citizenship, once granted, cannot be stripped. What about natural born Americans? Should they be stripped as well for comitting a crime? Hell no. Bad bill, bad idea, and it could take us to a very dark place. But like Lord of Flies just pointed out two posts back, it will never pass.
  23. Especially one that was contrived entirely to sell beer. It does seem hypocritical doesn't it? On another note, this is the exact kind of story that will stoke American nationalisim and create a very powerful voter push back on any kind of immigration reform. Remember in 2006 the immigration protesters hauling down the American flag and running up a Mexican one at that post office. Couple that with that La Raza bunch calling for the creation of the Republica de Norte by siezing New Mexico, Arizona and southern California and most Americans were ready to lynch any congressman who voted in favor of amnesty. The fact that they backed it caused the Republicans to lose Congress in 2006 because most of their supporters stayed home.
  24. I HIGHLY doubt that. And anyone who did would be excoriated in the press. Showing contept, disrespect, hatred to the US and it's history and culture is cool and hip. Asking someone to not do it on a day of celebration is racist and intolerant. Or so they say. Wearing a Mexican flag on Veteran's day isn't disrespecting the US. Nor is wearing an American flag on the 5th of May disrespecting Mexico. Grow up, people, this is (or should be) such a ****ing nonissue. Oh I completely agree with you there. But that does not seem to be where we are these days.
  25. Interesting point. We all know the answer to that. Other countries do not seem to be infested with this sick, limp-wristed, liberal self hate that so many Americans (partucularly politicians and other "public servants") seem stricken with.
