American Riots, Michael Brown....is it justified ?
Guard Dog replied to BruceVC's topic in Way Off-Topic
Just when you think things can't sink lower, they do -
I found my Morrowind problem. I'm using a wireless mouse & number keypad for the controls. They both work fine on Oblivion & Skyrim. Morrowind does not like them. I plugged in a wired USB mouse and the problem is gone.

American Riots, Michael Brown....is it justified ?

Oh I've said there will be another civil war in the US. All the ingredients are there. I don't know how the lines will break out or how far in the future it is... but it's coming. Not for a long time I think, but it's coming. If Stiglitz is right, and he's been doing political economy for a long time, the top 1% (irrespective of party allegiance since they effectively control both) have been squeezing the system for all its worth for the past 30+ years. The middle class has lost the most, but everyone has lost something barring those at the very top who've increased their income many times over. As a rule, things take a drastic turn for the worse at the point where it doesn't make any difference whether a person will die due to starvation or to being shot. On one hand, the US is far off from that point due to cheap food and the availability of basic sustenance with any paying job, on the other, the 21st century individual has higher basic demands than a 19th century worker. "Clothes on your back, bread on the table and a roof over your head" don't really cut it anymore. One thing is for sure, as long as neo-liberal dogma is controlling the distribution of wealth policy and allowing for uncontested accumulation of capital at the top - the part of the cake available to the rest gets smaller and smaller. This is where I could post a wall of text explaining how in the US economy zero sum economics just does not apply. But no one would read it, it's OT anyway, and I just don't have the energy. -
Jeez oby who am I supposed to be afraid of here? A few weeks ago you said the jews were running everything. Then it's the guy who lives in the penthouse of the pyramid. The cartoon you posted makes it look like the sleestack from Land of the Lost are the ones to worry about. Heck when I was growing up they told me I had to be afraid of the Russians. I'm confused... who should I be worried about again?

This whole thing is just asinine. Gorgon tells me that Namutree has done an injustice to me and mine. He didn't really but I trust Gorgon so I refuse to believe Malcador when he tells me Namutree is innocent. I get so mad I go and burn down Drowsy Emperor's house. Even though he's my neighbor and I know he has nothing to do with it. Gorgon then goes out and tells all the other's my anger is understandable. Who's really at fault here? If it's Gorgon what does that say about me because I'm stupid enough to a) be manipulated in that way & b) take it out on someone I know is innocent. The truth is I'm the only one at fault in this scenario. -

6 hours into Morrowind. The game responds very sluggishly to mouse & keyboard commands. Was it always this way? I don't remember. It's becoming a problem with flocks of Cliff Racers dogging my footsteps. I'll have to fool with the settings.

There is a story starting to come out now that Missouri Governor was ready to have the National Guard out to protect homes and businesses in the event of riots. The President (Barack Obama for those who have forgotten) called him and asked him not to deploy them. Why I wonder? If the story is true. -
Better watch out Oby. Now that you've let the Brit ruling class know you're on to them you might run into a well dressed, well-spoken, tea sipping, jag-u-war driving British guy who say's "Terribly sorry" before shooting you in the head with a Walther PPK. It could happen!

More importantly is that he doesn't tell them what they can do about it. He doesn't say; the relationship between the black community and law enforcement could be mended if the drug war were ended. He just says, "Well, use this anger for something positive." - Not a direct quote, but the jist of what he said. He needs to be more bold and actually name things that should change. Obama is a politician. As such he is far more interested in exploiting problems than fixing them. Politically they need black community to be in a constant state of rage and mistrust. That way they can run ads that say it's all the Republicans fault during the election cycles. Demagoguery does not work when folks are reasonably happy. That's the worst part of this I think. They whip these folks into a rage and then set them loose for very cynical and selfish reasons. If all racism, real or perceived, were to end tomorrow do you know who would be out of a job? Al Sharpton & Co. Makes you think every time you see him show up at a place where he can cry "racism". -

You now the media & the local government did everything possible to provoke this mess. The grand jury verdict was in around noon that day. Why wait until 9 PM and make announcements every hour on the time? Just release it with a low key press conference before crowds gather. Instead they wait until night when everyone is off work and has plenty of time to gather. All the while the media is going on about how there will be riots and how unjust it will be if the cop gets no-billed. Then it happens in a big media spectacle. The "black community leaders" if you want to call them that whip everyone into a frenzy. Barack Obama himself, who did not attend a single minute of Grand Jury testimony and is not in a position to know the first thing about it appeals for calm on one side of his mouth while saying how fuc--d up the country is with the other. And after all this a bunch of folks, some of whom don't even know why they are doing it go out and loot and burn down their own neighborhoods like the pack of savages the media just spent all day telling them they were. -
Why I like games like Pillars

Nooo...it is very old, its infinity from 2000! How innovative of them not to continue a franchise. Sure Yeah, I get that the IE is not new and this is hardly the first game to use it. But as a PC game engine is has always worked well IMO and there is a lot more to a game that eye-popping 3D graphics. I've played a lot of pretty games that just stunk. -
Congratulations! Looks like they're still in the white-lightning phase of a start-up distillery (i.e., whiskey not yet ready, but selling moonshine or similar un-aged liquor). Let us know when they've got a batch of bourbon ready for market and I'll give it a try if they distribute in my area. It's going to be a while. Their first barrels of Tennessee small batch went into storage in 2011 and they have limited storage space. That is the main reason they were looking for partners is to build a storage facility. I think they are on to something but it will be a long time before this tree bears any fruit. Heck I'd have to drive all the way to Austin Peay to even get a bottle myself.

That is still illegal... more is the pity! But I do live in an isolated, wooded area with good soil, a freshwater stream on my property and plenty of expertise on growing corn and basic chemistry. I could do it if I were so inclined.

I support the idea of you investing in a whiskey business, its Tennessee after all. I imagine you guys were drinking whiskey when you came out the womb? Nah, I was born in Miami. And I was a beer drinker for most of my days. I didn't really get into hard liquor until I discovered bourbon and could afford the good stuff.

I'm looking forward to PoE because it will be something new. Considering the design team it has I already expect it will be well written and well laid out. I expect the characters to be interesting and the world well fleshed out. The past work of the Obsidian team in KOTOR2, FO:NV, and the BI games for those still around, has raised a pretty high bar on these expectations. But this game will be a new world, no old canon to follow. No franchise to continue. They can cut something new from whole cloth. A complete world of their own making. And if it's done well I certainly hope it will not be the last. -

There will be no romance in PoE. Just as well I'd say. So few of them come off right anyway. They are either contrived or so ham fistedly done as to be comical. The only one I've ever thought worked was Morrigan in DA:O -
Don't worry, you are in good company on that note. I don't think I've ever had a PC I didn't hate 3/4 of the way through any game. Or a game I didn't wish I had played differently 3/4 of the way through.

Guess what? I'm in the whiskey business now! Sort of.... I joined an investment group to buy a minority stake in Short Mountain Distillery over in Woodbury. Usually I support whiskey makers the old fashion way... drink a lot of their products. Now I'm trying a new way to go. Usually small start ups with limited capital don't make sound investments but in this case it's family owned and family run and their overhead is pretty low and I love their marketing. Now I guess I should try a bottle of their hootch and see what we see.
