  1. When my dog passed away a few months ago I was very depressed. But, although it is tempting, I would never consider this: http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2017/11/13/texas-company-cloning-pets/ The cloned dog will look exactly like the one you remember. But it won't be him/her. The things that made the original dog special was time you spent together. The history and experiences and training and fun times. The new dog won't have any of that and since we are all the sum of those experiences the new dog may be totally different. I think that would make it even harder. There are so many homeless dogs that need what your old dog had that if you are going to have a fresh start no matter what, it should be completely fresh. But it would be tempting. Or you could go a different way:http://mashable.com/2017/11/13/boston-dynamics-unveils-spotmini-robot-dog/#dt3k2OhLXPqE
  2. That actually wasn't a homeowner's association. It was the city of Miami Shores. Of course, from personal experience I think even less of homeowner's associations. Now there is petty tyranny for you. My fist house was in a suburb of Fort Lauderdale called Margate. It was, like most south Florida developments under the rule of a particularly nazi-esque association. The vice president of this thing was a 70 year old moral busybody who got his exercise every morning by walking around the community with a clip board and a camera looking for violations to cite people for. I was driving to work late one morning when I saw that fat, bald SOB on his knees in someone's yard measuring the height of grass with a ruler. I seriously considered running him over. I'm quite sure no one would have seen anything. But for all that a homeowners association is something you freely join when you buy property in the community. You know going in that buying that house means joining the agreement of homeowners to live by a certain set of rules. The city on the other hand exerting such heavy handed control over a private residence in which the public has no ownership interest should be alarming. I've said it before the five justices who sided with the City of New London in the Kelo case should have been dragged from the courthouse at the end of a rope and hanged in the street. That decision changed forever the relationship between private property and municipal authority.
  3. Think liberty is not dying in the land of the "free"? Your private property is no longer private, nor even really yours: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/miami-shores/article97915197.html
  4. am recalling a few years ago we were seeing a job posting in oregon... or washington. am always getting the hippy states confused. listing were for psychiatrist applicants for state hospital(s). mongst preferred skills were the traditional multilingual aspect, but with one odd addition: klingon. 'ccording to an article we read in the months after seeing the job posing, a not insignificant number o' mental distressed patients communicated in klingon, and only in klingon. am not certain why, but we felt unexpected pity for rachel dolezal. not sympathy, but pity. so utter pathetic. And don't forget Elizabeth Warren.
  5. Do... people actually do that? With their exes, I mean? Well, I was really just trying to be poetic. But to tell the truth when my ex-wife and I split up I hated her with a passion. But a few years later I had a bad car accident and nearly checked out during and after. After that we spoke and made peace. I haven't spoken to her since and she's married to someone else now anyway. But I do remember the good times more than the bad. As for the toast, there is not bad reason to have a drink.
  6. Mainly I posted it here because the politicians who want us to go back to feudalism and live in mud huts and ride donkeys to our "green" jobs live in houses that burn more electricity than a small city. They fly in private jets going nowhere they need to be, thoughtlessly burn energy and preach at us how we need to shape up. They don't even believe their own message. Or just think they are above it all. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/GlobalWarming/story?id=2906888 Besides I remember in 1975 hearing we had just 10 years left. Then in 1982 there would be mass starvation by 1990. Then in 1996 the Earth would be uninhabitable in the tropic belt by 2020. How many times does the boy have to cry wolf? That is not to say climate change isn't a real thing. The climate has been changing since the first free protein strings formed a cell. The climate on Mars has been heating up since Viking touched down at Chryse Plantitia in 1976 to what Opportunity is measuring at Edeavor crater some 4000k away. And that is also not to say man made gasses and human activity do not have some effect. The reductions in the use of fluorocarbons has already had an impact on the ozone layer. But far too often the "green" cause is co-opted by people with a political axe to grind and use this "green zealotry" as a cynical path to political power. Religion and science made a poor combination. But politics and science are equally toxic.

  8. I watched a lot of college football yesterday and I finally realized what's been bothering me about the NFL. They are all running the same offense and same defense with just a few variations. The NFL used to be where offensive schemes were innovated. Now everyone if using the same Pro Style bastardized version of the West Coast offense from the '90's. And they all run (with a few exceptions like Tampa) the same defense. That's why I'm losing interest I guess. It used to be a good plan could beat a good team. Now all the plans are the same.
  9. I have the routine I do every Sunday morning. I have a daily newspaper delivery but they won't deliver it down my dirt road driveway. They leave it in a plastic box on the main road. Sunday I walk down to the road to get the paper then make a pot of coffee and just relax for a few hours and read it. So anyway this morning just past sunrise I'm walking down with my dog Sunny. It's a pretty good walk, a little less than 1/2 a mile, 800M give or take. It takes me past my neighbors field. I saw a deer standing in the middle of the field and pulled out my phone to get a picture. Well, as I'm lining up the shot Sunny sees here and starts barking. Of course the deer bolted. I did manage to catch this though:

  14. This reminds me of something I heard a long time ago: Heaven is a place where: The police are British The chefs are Italian, The mechanics are German The lovers are French and the Swiss run everything Hell is a place where: The Police are German The chefs are British The mechanics are French The lovers are Swiss and the Italians run everything
  15. The US Marine Corps is like an old girlfriend from long ago. You had some wild times together. And while it wasn't all good by any means, you remember the good stuff more than the bad. You would never trade the time spent together but you would never go back to her either. But still, when her birthday rolls around you can't help but raise a toast to her. Hey Shady & Manifested, Happy Birthday my brothers! Here's to you and our old girlfriend.
  16. the hell did you do to motivate that chicken? Trying to clean out the pen... she would NOT leave. And a more disgusting job than that one I could not imagine.
  17. It makes sense for Virginia to turn blue. Over the past 15 years there is one industry in this country that has enjoyed unparalleled growth and expansion. The majority of the people who work in it want that to continue and the Democrats are this industry's greatest champion and proponent. The industry is located right between Maryland and Virginia and almost all of it's employees live in one state or the other.. I don't think anyone needs to have is spelled out just what industry I'm talking about here.

  19. Anyone who thinks chickens can't fly has never tried to catch a sufficiently motivated chicken.
  20. If history is any guide, the Republicans will continue f-----g up. The anti-establisment types will be mad they are not helping Trump, and the Trumpians will turn off the moderates. Meanwhile, no tax cuts, no Obamacare repeal, and people wonder why the hell they voted Republican in the first place. So in 2018 they stay home and the Democrats take over the Senate and maybe the House. Of course they will immediately go nuts and try to impeach Trump whether he deserves it or not and that will harden the political battle lines. So in 2020 Trump gets re-elected with at least half of congress being Democrat and they snipe at each other for four years until the Democrats take over everything in 2024. That will last two years until they have pissed off half the country with their liberty-hating big government spending orgy and the Republicans take back one of both houses in 2026. And on and on it goes. How do I know this? This cycle has been repeating itself for twenty five f-----g years now. Democrat, Republican, Democrat, Republican, like spokes in a wheel. First one is on top, then the other and on and on it goes grinding the people of this country into the dirt. It's time to break the wheel! http://www.lp.org

  25. He didn't have a carry permit. It's a different thing and would not apply to a rifle anyway. If you have a concealed carry you don't have to go through a background check because the State has already done one on you. In my State they took my fingerprints, DD-214, and criminal history. It was pretty thorough. But as long as I keep my license up I don't need to do a background check every time I buy something. You need that license to carry a loaded firearm concealed. But not to own one. Or even carry one as long as it's not loaded or concealed. But yes, if he bought that legally (and now multiple news sources are reporting he did) then it's probable the gun-decked his background check. Because if they hadn't it would have been caught. Someone is in big trouble
