  1. THOUGHTCRIME! https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/kylie-jenner-slammed-handmaids-tale-themed-party-192214186.html Nothing like a weird birthday party theme to get the "hollywood left" in a snit.
  2. Now that is wild stuff!
  3. This. That got him nominated. Not being Hillary Clinton got him elected. You didn't really know what you were getting with Trump. Everyone knew what Hillary Clinton was all about. This time around you know what you are getting. So unless the Democrats take leave of their senses and nominate Sanders, Booker, or one of the other crazy ones, the 2020 race should be theirs to lose. IDGAF who wins. I'll hate them no matter what. As long as Congress is split I'll sleep soundly. As for the last two and a half years... don't blame me I voted for Johnson.
  4. So, say you have this really big and important job that you just HAVE to do. But it's a very hard job so you keep making yourself busy with smaller and easier jobs. You tell yourself "I'll catch up to the big one later, as soon as I do the small ones". But you keep "finding" more and more small ones to enable you to put off the big one. It's called Industrious Procrastination. Doesn't this strike you as a perfect example of that???? https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/9/18658839/elden-ring-george-rr-martin-fromsoftware-game-of-thrones-e3-2019-microsoft
  5. Watched the Bruce Willis version of Death Wish last night. It sucked. Completely and totally and thoroughly. The 1974 Charles Bronson movie was great. This grease fire was as far from great as it gets.
  6. The only thing surprising about recent developments in Hong Kong is that they have been so long in coming. China has become a modern and prosperous country by shedding some of the impediments it's economic system had placed on it's growth. But it is not a "free" country by any means and is not likely to morph into one.
  7. Wait... one more:
  8. OK, that's all I've got today
  9. Nightcrawlers are never the wrong answer. Unless you are going in saltwater. Then something at will live longer than 10 seconds in salt water might be better choice.
  10. I'm not. I was just on vacation last week. Melk has me confused with Gromnir I think. My retirement is set as long as I retire at or after 60. The earlier I do it though the earlier I'll have to die. Or take up bank robbery or something.
  11. Hey a lot of effort wen into those tapes. Waiting for the radio station to play the right song. Hitting the recording start and stop just right so you only get the song you want. It took effort to be a cheapskate in the '80's
  12. You get the government you deserve
  13. Even that plan is more realistic. But when the sun goes nova Mars will still be too close
  14. Call me crazy but it seems it would be more efficient to leave Earth rather than make Earth leave: https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/1138008/earth-orbit-change-dying-sun-asteroid-mining-solar-sail-space-news
  15. Today I cut the grass, raked out the chicken pen, put new hay in the hen house, turned the garden, washed the truck all while listening to the Rays beat the Red Sox. Tonight the pups are getting a bath and I'm catching the other half of the Rays/Red Sox double header on the radio. All while enjoying several glasses of Kentucky's finest.
  16. Wow. Post hoc ergo propter hoc. You do have a point that it did happen. I graduated HS in 1989 and there were shotguns and rifles on racks in cars driven by students. We went shooting after school more than once. But you cannot even draw a straight line between the two times through any one cause.
  17. Sorry but this is the kind of touchey feely hooey that drives people back to spanking. I don't think corporal punishment is effective because it is not something to be feared. Punishment SHOULD be a thing to be dreaded and avoided. Sitting down and "tawking abowut ow feewings" is only going to encourage aggression and misbehavior. The fatal flaw in this idea is that the misbehavior is not understood to be misbehavior. Maybe that is true in a small percentage of the time but most of the timekids being bad know they ate being bad.
  18. It's possible he may not have intended to go through with it in violation of the trade deal he negotiated himself. This may have all been brinkmanship on his part. In that case he got something for nothing. Kudos to him I guess. What he actually got from Mexico remains to be seen. A "promise" to do better in stopping the train of illegals may amount to nothing. It does give him a PR win though and that isn't nothing in this country.
  19. A punishment is effective if the one receiving it perceives it as something to be avoided. The problem with corporal punishment is if you are using it with sufficient force to injure a kid it IS abuse. And if it is not hard enough to injure then the kid will figure out real quick (as I did) that it is preferable to other forms of punishment. So ultimately it is self defeating. You can make the argument that prior to a certain age it might be effective but there will definitely be diminishing returns. The other problem is kids need to understand WHY they are being punished. Otherwise the entire exercise is pointless. If they are young enough for corporal punishment to be effective are they mature enough to know why you are using it? I don't know the answer... never had kids. Just posing the question. I will tell you to never use it on dogs because they definitely won't know why you are hitting them. That is certainly self defeating. If you didn't catch your dog doing whatever it was that pissed you off just let it go. Ten seconds after the fact they have forgotten they even did it.
  20. When I was a kid if you got in trouble you had a choice between after school detention or three licks with the paddle. Buddy, THAT is a no brainer. Three licks is over on ten seconds and you do not need to explain to your parents why you were late. I figured out early on corporal punishment is a joke. They cannot hit you hard enough to actually hurt you. My dad used to say "boy go cut me a switch" OK, coming right up. 10 seconds later all is forgiven and you don't have to spend an hour in your room or have your Atari (yes I'm old) taken away. If a punishment is not a deterrent how can it be effective?
  21. This is pretty cool! https://www.chronicle.com/article/And-for-Extra-Credit-Read-a/246357
  22. Nothing from the man himself but multiple sources say Rothfuss's Doors of Stone will be out 8/2020: https://lrmonline.com/news/third-kingkiller-chronicle-book-gets-2020-release-date/
