Sith and bad skin
SteveThaiBinh replied to Padmi Skydrunkard's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Glowing orange, as though t'were the fiery pits of hell. -
Back on topic, either Revan, the Exile or a new character would be OK, provided the writer has a clear vision of what they want to do with the character and puts a little effort into tying up loose ends. I personally don't have a problem with level 20 characters suddenly starting again from level 1 - my disbelief in that regard is easily suspended. The idea of playing all three at different points, meeting up in the final stages, isn't really for me, though. I want an epic journey with a small group of people.

Crashing all the time

When was the last time you reformatted your hard drive and re-installed Windows? I know I say this a lot, but it really worked for me. -

Not really. The game is full of surprises. -
Sith and bad skin

I agree. Yes, you can explain it away by saying it's a special case because you're a wound in the force and your companions are linked to you, but you can do that with any aspect of this game. It's just inconsistent. Why aren't the Sith Lords and Sith Marauders that you meet on Malachor V corrupted by the Dark Side? -

Vorpal Bunnies vs. Gizka. Who would win? -
KOTOR II in the top 100 games of all time
SteveThaiBinh replied to 11XHooah's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I'm far from being a dedicated gamer, but I would've hoped to have heard of more than five out of the top ten. And a lot of them seem to be rather recent. I notice from the rule list that only games which have received 100 reader ratings are eligible, so I guess that rules out old games that aren't on the IGN website. -
Like many plot elements in this very ambiguous game, they don't tell you, but they imply what happened.

This is normal. The Red Eclipse come when you go to the Ebon Hawk the first time on Nar Shaddaa. Visas comes when you go to the Ebon Hawk after you get enough lightside or darkside points. Sometimes, these two things happen at the same time. It's a bit difficult, but not a bug. When you are fighting Visas, run and find T3. He'll help you to fight her. Did you get a message from T3 about meeting at the Jekk-Jekk Tarr? If not, you can't find Goto yet. The message comes later in the game. -
Ah, but who is the Exile? Who is Revan? Do any of us really know who we are? Aren't we all, deep down, lost?

What happens if you stay roughly neutral?
SteveThaiBinh replied to Dodecahedron87's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
It worked out pretty well for my exile i think; she rarely swayed past 1/3rd of the middle and never broke the character i picked for her with the choices. At the very bottom she still held the same 'good' values that made her go to war in the first place, but also the same short temper which played arge part in disagreeing with the council ... then on top of it there was the results of being exposed to war and Revan's manipulative tactics: little compassion if not plain disdain for weakness (especially the whiny kind) and not shying away for violence if it was believed to be the most effective way towards a goal. And then finally atop of it all there's result of living for long years on her own -- looking for self-interest first and everything else later in regular circumstances. With a setup like this you can have occasional moment of compassion, choose the 'good' path if there's nothing to gain from acting opposite, kick someone's teeth the moment they annoy you, and rarely turn down offered opportunity to make some money... all in character. (and no drowning puppies were saved while playing the game... cats are way nicer all-around, anyway " <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Interesting. I might try that, next time I play (which will be after the movie/music patch comes out). -
On this. What do the 'S' and 'N' stand for? 'Strange' and 'Nearly as strange', perhaps.

Sith and bad skin
SteveThaiBinh replied to Padmi Skydrunkard's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Bad skin is a common DS problem. The Daleks have similar trouble, which is why they go around saying 'Exfoliate! Exfoliate!' -
What do you suppose the 'S' and 'N' stand for?

In the Star Wars universe, Jedi are much more powerful than ordinary people, so much so that combat between a Jedi and non-Jedi is short. In a game, that's boring because you want to be able to roleplay and experience lots of different kinds of characters, and they need to be balanced in order to make that fun. So there's an inherent tension there. Bioware ignored it, which is why so many people play Kotor 1 with Jedi only. Obsidian did rather better, but it remains to be seen whether this tension can ever be fully resolved in an RPG.

What happens if you stay roughly neutral?
SteveThaiBinh replied to Dodecahedron87's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Trying to stay neutral is a futile exercise, and sort of putting the cart before the horse. You'll need to do strangely contradictory things to maintain the balance: one moment you'll be saving a drowning puppy, the next you'll be stealing sweeties from small Rodian children. Choose a concept for your character, the kind of person you think he or she is, then play consistently. If it works out that the character does indeed hover around neutral, I'd love to hear about it, because I don't think the game awards LS/DS/no points consistently. -
Yes, you can regain these LS points. Go do nice things.

Were you satisfied with KOTOR 2?
SteveThaiBinh replied to Eddo36's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
It's not fantastic, but remember that some who voted 'no' still liked the game in many ways. And fans are sometimes the most critical of all, more so than gamers who play the game once through then move on to something else. -
The same skewing effect also lies behind the supposed success of private schools compared with state schools. If you adjust for these effects, there is little evidence that private schools provide better quality education than state schools. Parents who send their kids to expensive private schools are paying for the social networking and the status, not quality of education as such. They rarely do. Critical thinking skills, basic literacy, numeracy, social skills, intercultural competence, the ability to learn, and a dozen other things teachers have dumped upon them in the latest education policy fashion. Most schools do amazingly well at their job. Good luck, it's an increasingly popular option. If more people and more governments could realise that education is about a lot more than formal schooling, the world would be a better place.

It looks Eastern European, probably Russian, although you'd need a Russian speaker to confirm that. If so, then there's a good chance it's an illegal pirated version, despite the fact that it looks so official. I doubt that even if you got the official .exe file it would work with the rest of your game, though I guess you can try.

You mentioned that the install was in a different language. Which language was it?

OK, fine. So you're using the term 'power-gaming' to mean attempting to maximise XP while staying within role, and I'm using it to mean disregarding role in order to maximise XP. I see the distinction, but what term would you apply to what I've been calling power-gaming?

What will happen to the students of the school that are scheduled for closure? I'm assuming that in the US, the government does have a duty to provide a school place for all children. I've heard of 'No Child Left Behind'. What is it exactly?

Any developer, and especially one as young as Obsidian, has to be wary of attracting negative publicity because of this issue. No-one wants to be singled out by extremist Christians or others for the latest anti-liberal crusade. Sadly, that leads to gays being absent from games, reinforcing prejudice and exclusion in the real world. I'm amazed and impressed that Bioware have taken such a strong stance on this, relative to other developers.
