force powers, let's be creative
SteveThaiBinh replied to Knights&Darths's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Like Yoda? It's perfectly workable - Jedi Frog prestige class, with extra bounciness. Darksiders get Sith Toad class instead, with various tongue-related abilities. -
WHO is still searching for a SARS vaccine There is no SARS vaccine, I checked. The spread of SARS was averted by sensible quarantine of the infected through effective action by governments and health workers. I am well aware of that. I was living in Viet Nam when SARS was first identified in Hanoi, and I remember the daily WHO advisories and phone calls from friends and family asking if I was dead yet. Avian Flu had already been around (as a minor issue) for a while, but never generated the public alarm that SARS did. I was merely suggesting that lessons learned from the fight against one might be usefully applied to the other. I think they are more capable of dealing with an outbreak of Avian Flu now than before the foot-and-mouth crisis. I'm primarily referring to an outbreak within the bird population. Should it spread to humans, the health service would be in the front line, and yes, I do have a great deal of faith in the NHS' ability to handle a large-scale national emergency, despite short-sighted cost cutting exercises by successive Conservative and Labour governments.

force powers, let's be creative
SteveThaiBinh replied to Knights&Darths's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Was it called 'Breath Control'? It was still a force power, I think. Force Calm or Force Peace: Causes combatents to stop violent attacks, go home and have a long hard think about what they've done. Force Jump: Not as a Guardian power for attack, just for making big jumps, such as roof to roof. Hopefully Kotor 3 will have a more interactive 3D environment. -
KotoR 3: Ideas and Suggestions
SteveThaiBinh replied to Fionavar's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I'm not really suggesting this - after all, being able to wander into someone's home at will isn't realistic. It was more a reference to Morrowind and Oblivion, where it's the need to give each NPC their own house that creates empty towns and cities. If you have a slum, then it should look like a slum and be packed full of people like a slum. Realism is a useful tool to create variety and interest, but I wouldn't advocate slavish adherence to it. -
This isn't new, although it's good to bring these things up every now and then for newcomers. You're right about Atris, and I think that parts of Kreia's dialogue on Malachor have also been found on the discs in Atris' voice. Cut content strikes again.

My Sentinel character has all the computer skill points I'll ever need. I don't keep T3 around because he's useful; I keep him because he's my responsibility. A T3 is for life, not just for Christmas. Mira, Bao-Dur and Atton all had good demolition skills - the idea was to give us a good choice of characters to play with, so we weren't stuck with one we didn't like. However, the reactions on this thread to the possibility of killing off Handmaiden suggest that many players would rather not drag this crowd of ne'er-do-wells around the Galaxy, feeding and clothing the ingrates and listening to their neuroses. Better to have the choice to bring them along or leave them on their respective planets (or in the case of G0-T0, jettison him into space for the Star Wars Galaxy-players to find 4000 years later ).

If you don't like Pazaak, I strongly recommend dufflover's Pure Pazaak, which I play regularly. I don't like Pazaak as part of Kotor 2; it doesn't work well within an RPG, for me at least. I like it as a standalone game, something you would get in those 'selection of card games' things that retail for about

KotoR 3: Ideas and Suggestions
SteveThaiBinh replied to Fionavar's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
In the absence of the mods putting this thread out of its misery, it's up to the rest of us to try to get it back on-topic. So, as I was saying, Morrowind-style wide open spaces. They were great, because that's what the world is like (or at least, used to be like) - towns and villages dotted here and there and lots of empty space, forest or farmland between them. I thought Morrowind captured that extremely well. If the world as a whole feels empty, that's because more needed to be done to make the towns busy - more like eight-people to a house, you know? I think the designers of some of these games have spent too much time reading fantasy and not enough reading social history. So everybody gets their own little house and their own bed by themselves? Not in real life. So, in summary, for Kotor 3 lets have Morrowind's seamless world with big empty wildernesses and the odd farmer, plus lively and crowded towns full of people to talk to/rob/kill as takes your fancy. -
Huh? What's Handmaiden doing there?
SteveThaiBinh replied to Jediphile's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I don't remember Disciple, so perhaps Gabrielle's right and influence is also an issue. On the other hand, maybe he was just so dull I didn't notice him. -
They did? I'm fairly sure that's not the case, or at least not a very effective vaccine. The main lessons I took away from SARS was the importance of governments co-operating with the WHO and being honest. I'm glad I was in Viet Nam and not China/Hongkong at the time - the Chinese government tried to pretend it wasn't happening, then there was a panic because nobody believed them any more. The Vietnamese government told the truth and wasn't too proud to ask for international help. Any country which is overly-obsessed with a narrow national security agenda is potentially a threat to its neighbours because it could try to cover up a new epidemic and lose the chance of nipping it in the bud. Why does this make you annoyed? It just seems like a strange title for the thread. I hope you found your answer and are feeling better now.

KOTOR II Wins Best RPG of the Year at G-Phoria
SteveThaiBinh replied to Craigboy2's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Game of the Year? None, as far as I know. RPG of the year, I guess a few, but it hasn't won everything the way Kotor 1 did, thanks largely I think to Jade Empire. -
Guardians, Consulars, and Sentinels
SteveThaiBinh replied to T'hen Malosk's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
They get more skills - that's their main strength and the reason I almost always start Kotor 2 with a Sentinel. More dialogue options. -
I want to do my bit, but alas I have no chickens to take indoors.

Exactly how do you like it? Do you find it funny? Do you appreciate the skill of the artist? These thing are acceptable. Other things, not so much.

Well, the first of two actually, three if you count the fan one. I'm guessing Obsidian does not feel the need to shower us with concept art. Or am I being too impatient?

What's with the cameos?
SteveThaiBinh replied to Nur Ab Sal's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
If you had every character appearing as a cameo, it would just make it more confusing and even harder for Kotor 2 to stand alone as a game. I think Obsidian were trying to make the fans happy, but probably went far enough with the cameos. No, Canderous and Vrook were not the characters I most wanted to return (what were they thinking? ) but I guess that's a matter of taste. -

Huh? What's Handmaiden doing there?

It's not a bug, she just doesn't have a lot to say when she arrives. Although I think she does say 'Apathy is death!' if called upon. -
KotoR 3: Ideas and Suggestions
SteveThaiBinh replied to Fionavar's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I have a comment to make about the use of Morrowind-style open spaces in a possible Kotor 3, but I think I'll save it for the new thread that will appear when the mods lock this one. Anytime soon would be good. -
6 hours a day!?...you don't get out much do you? I play for an hour at the most. You do have atleast one window in your room right? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Six hours is nothing - I can play for twice that (I rarely do, though). Chinese government plans 3-hour limit for online gaming Whatever will they do with the free hours? Oh, right, they'll play off-line games instead.

It was nice to come home after living in Asia and get off the plane a year younger than when I boarded. I'm 31, for a little while longer.

Reading can be fun if the text is interesting - and it was. The start was weak if you like combat, strong if you like stories, characters and mysteries. I thought it was excellent and did a great job of drawing me into the story. The pacing I didn't notice because I was so immersed in the story, though should I ever manage to replay it I might get a better feel for it.
