Ok, so when you enchant your weapons, it should have different skin.Better quality looking material, or flames etc.
On some items it works nicely (crosbow, pistol) on some it dont work at all (spear, sword, mace)

is there a way to display it properly?

On level 8 you can upgrade fine to exceptional and on level 12 you can upgrade both fine and exceptional to superb given that weapon has two enchantment places free.

Fine, exceptional, superb are in the damage category of enchanting, along with things like +2 damage and so on, they are the best enchantments, but also the most expensive from a slot perspective. So, exceptional takes up 4, superb takes up 6, ouch.

 

Still, I have fit exceptional in on a few weapons I found in Act 2, and gotten to 11 or 12/12.  Ultimately you want a weapon that's at a low enchant value with a lot of effects and 0 in each of the categories we can enchant.

 

I must say I am a little underwhelmed by the crafting system, but I guess it's okay.

I understand quality of weapons, and enchant mechanic.But if you enchant spear with -fine- enchant, the spear should have diferent skin.It should look better.Smooth wooden shaft, pomel at and of a spear etc.Go look at wiki.

Oh, I get what you were asking, but then you asked ...BTW, is there a way to enchant -exeptional- on -fine- quality weapon? and that's what we were answering, because I honestly don't know or care about the answer to your first question.

Neverwinter Nights did this all the way back in 2003, and before that, Baldur's Gate did it in the sprite world of IE.

I don't pay too much attention but I think they do because I upgraded Palle's beautiful two handed sword, with fire, and it does drip flame, but I can't honestly say it didn't do that before I enchanted it, because I am not observant and was not looking for it.

Lash enchantments give a visual effect, just not in the inventory screen.

On a related note: Is it possible to turn off these effects altogether. I hate glowing weapons - it's a personal thing.

It doesn't have that flame effect until you add Burning Lash to it.
