March 27, 201510 yr Originally this issue came about after a crash in Raedric's Hold where my saves disappeared. I restarted, got back to the hold, saved, quit the program, verified files on Steam (all of them were fine), relaunched the program, and all my saves were gone again. I decided to test to see if this issue was restricted just to this specific area. I started a new game and saved during the prologue. Games could be loaded until the game had been shut down. Once it was shut down all my save games disappeared again. I'm basically stuck between keeping the game running forever, or waiting for a patch.
March 27, 201510 yr I don't know about the issue itself, but as a workaround, would it maybe work if you saved, then before actually exiting the game, alt-tabbing out and copying the save files elsewhere, so you can copy them back before loading again? Or would/do they disappear upon loading the game as well, not just exiting the game? Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.
March 27, 201510 yr What a terrifying bug... Yeah...those always suck. I had it happen to me in Dead Island, even after the patch that supposedly fixed it. Every time I exited that game, I lost all progress (chr. was still there, but he was like newly created/back to the intro scene again...). Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.
March 27, 201510 yr I have the same bug. No saves available when I turned the game back on. EDIT: Disabled the Steam Cloud and my saved games returned. Give it a try, see if it works. Edited March 27, 201510 yr by Chairchucker
March 27, 201510 yr Author Thanks for the suggestion, but sadly it didn't help. I even tried restarting Steam to ensure the change went through. I did some browsing and the saves are located in the proper folder, the game just won't recognize them for some reason.
March 27, 201510 yr Author Just attempted a complete uninstall, shut down, reboot, install, shut down, reboot, play and the issue is still present. I verified the save file is in the correct folder after closing the game, but when I relaunch the game the "Continue" and "Load" buttons aren't selectable. Creating a new character and going to menu and trying to load from there only displays the autosave for that character. All save files remain in the "C:\Users\USER\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity" folder after closing the game.
March 27, 201510 yr Hi greywolf00, Are you running the client as an administrator? Also, if not, it may help to make sure that you run the installer as an administrator initially. If this doesn't help, could you please start up the game and then after the main screen where the Continue and Load buttons remain greyed out, close the client and attach your outpug log file found here. It may also help us to know your system specifications, which can be found by following the steps in that link as well. I'll send this information along to our programmers and hopefully we can find a workaround and/or a fix. Thank you.
March 28, 201510 yr I've experienced this bug, too. Had a manual save disappear (not a quicksave). GOG version.
March 28, 201510 yr I've had this problem on my steam copy in Win 7. I quit, closed steam, ran as administrator and they were back. Still a couple of horrible minutes where I thought I'd lost nearly 15 hours of saved games.
March 28, 201510 yr Author So running as Admin originally worked, but I decided to exit the program and run as Admin again to confirm it was fixed, and now the issue is back. For some reason when I try to attach the output log or the DxDiag files the website gives me an Error No file was selected for upload even though the file name was showing up where it was supposed to. March 28, 201510 yr I'm getting this issue too. Really weird since after a few restarts they reappear. Very nasty bug though and I think many people will ragequit the game because of it. Edit: I'm finding it tends to happen when clicking the left mouse button to skip the intro screens. When I let it run through it usually detects the save files fine. The beta also had issues skipping the intro screen so maybe that's where the issue lies? Edited March 28, 201510 yr by Justinian
March 28, 201510 yr Can't load my saves either; the files are in %homepath%\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity (bunch of .savegame ZIPs), and there's an apparently outdated (it was last modified earlier than my last save games) loadedSave.zip in %localappdata%\Temp\Obsidian Entertainment\Pillars of Eternity, but output_log.txt says, among other things, "Error loading save game cache!", and the load and continue buttons are greyed out. Wasteland 2 (which I believe runs on the same engine?) appears to have had a similar problem due to a corrupted "save game table of contents", which could be fixed by deleting the TOC.txt file in the save game folder and letting the game rebuild it, but Pillars of Eternity doesn't seem to have an equivalent file, at least in this location. The first time it happened, disabling Steam cloud sync appeared to fix the issue, but obviously I can't disable it again once it's already been disabled (and since this problem seems to be somewhat random for some users - not for me, I tried all combinations of not skipping the intro, loading without Steam, and running as an administrator, all without success -, it probably was a placebo fix anyway). This whole predicament obviously renders the game even more unplayable than the baffling, inexcusable and inexplicable lack of companion AI / tactics. Please patch this yesterday. The game should simply not have been released knowing it had this kind of bugs.
March 28, 201510 yr OK, seems like it might be due to some sort of savegame corruption... deleting all save games from %homepath%\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity except for the autosave and the latest one seemed to work (although probably identifying which one was causing the problem through trial and error and deleting that one would probably also have worked), at least for now (yay, uncertainty!). Obviously keep a backup copy of your savegames if you try this, just in case. Still a terribly nasty bug, though, particularly without knowing what causes the corruption in the first place (I could try to identify which savegame/s cause the problem, try to replicate it, and attempt to find a pattern, but frankly I can't be bothered, and it should be the darned developers' job anyway), so better save often (and don't even consider trial of iron, unless you're certifiably insane or you don't plan on closing the game and have a very good UPS) and be ready for the possibility that the corrupted save/s might be your last one/s. Who plays to relax, anyway..? Getting stressed and anxious over the possibility of losing your savegames and having to tediously replay from whatever point the game decides is what gaming is all about, isn't it?
March 28, 201510 yr Author In fairness, this bug clearly isn't universally plaguing all players. Moving from a small sample size to release inevitably means finding bugs that weren't detected before. I understand it's very frustrating to encounter, but it's bound to happen. Not skipping the intro didn't help either sadly, but again thanks for the continued recommendations. Disabling cloud saves and removing all but 1 save from the folder so far seems to have worked on more than 1 trial now. Hopefully that helps to pinpoint the issue for you guys.

For me it seems to work if I have no more than two (2) .savegame files in %homepath%\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity, autosave and quicksave included, at least for now (although your post is seriously making me worry that I might also run out of luck). After a better look it doesn't seem due to file corruption either, since any two .savegame files seem to work. The game just seems to somehow give up when it sees a third one (who uses more than two save files including autosave and quicksave, anyway, the one percent? [disclaimer: this is effin' sarcasm, if that wasn't clear]). Frankly, this is quickly sapping me of any motivation to play. Why even bother when I'll almost surely end up losing all my progress? It's fast becoming anything but fun. Probably better just uninstall and wait for a community patch in a few years...
March 31, 201510 yr I have found a working savegame fix the will load savegames and create new working non corrupt savegames This has been tested and working on 3 different machines with 5 different save files myself and have had 2 other friends fix their savegames with this method. First delete the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow\Obsidian Entertainment Then delete the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Obsidian Entertainment If you have any saves in C:\Users\username\Documents\My Games\Pillars of Eternity Copy them to C:\Users\username\Saved Games\Pillars of Eternity Run the game as admin and load the most recent save Move your char and save a new save. Without exiting the game reload that new save. Save again in the same save. Exit the game. That should work and create new files in LocalLow and Local\Temp Though its probably unnecessary before i exit i save then i load my save and resave the same save every time before i exit the game now. I have my 60+ hour save now to 85 hours without an issue on multiple machines. Please dont ask questions or expect me to explain this again if it works great if it doesnt or you cant figure it out good luck.
March 31, 201510 yr Author Went through the directions step for step, after running the game as Admin the Continue button and Load button are still grayed out sadly, but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Will update if when it stops working.
April 7, 201510 yr Not only did I lose my save game data at the Keep, but the game un deleted and older save game file and started me on that! WTF!
April 8, 201510 yr This is still not fixed on latest 1.3 patch. I still occasionally load the game to one or more of my characters saves gone. When I quit and restart they are there again. I just don't understand why this is still an issue? Why is it so difficult to load files from a location? http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/75825-30-hours-all-gone-saved-games-missing/ http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/75459-save-game-gone http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/74266-crash-just-ate-all-my-saves http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/76505-saved-games-wiped-out http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/76380-game-disappeared
