The injury-ravaged Lakers have been considering whether to execute a Gasol-for-Bynum trade because it would get them out of the luxury tax for the first time in seven years. More important than the $20 million in instant savings would be easing the pressure of going into the repeater tax in either 2015 or '16. 2) Bynum for Jazz Richard Jefferson - The Jazz could trade Jefferson for Bynum, then waive Bynum before the January 7th deadline to guarantee his $12 million for this season, saving them nearly $5 million in salary for this season. While giving the young guys responsibility is important, Durant will have to do this sort of thing once in a while in Russ's absence to avoid prolonged losing streaks as they go through growing pains. It will be a tight race in the West for 1-4. Plus the first two OKC-GS games came down to buzzer beating heroics. Deng is a good player, but this season is lost and they need to think about the future. Also, they need to prepare for the chance that Rose will never be the same. Hopefully he comes back and plays as good as he did before the injuries and stays healthy, but they need to plan for worst case scenario. Not being able to sign Deng to an extension certainly played into the decision. Deng may be nothing but a rental for the Cavs. The first round pick (from Sacramento) that the Cavs gave up is protected thru 2016 and likely reverts to a second round pick. At the half it looked like all Rockets but things hanged dramatically in the second half. The Rockets set a record for greatest differential in scoring between halves, scoring a season high 73 points in the 1st half and a pathetic 19 points in the second half. That Kevin Durant guy, he might be pretty good: 54 points 19 for 28 shooting 4 rebounds 6 assists 2 steals and a block for good measure. Curry also lit it up with 37 points and 11 assists 3 boards and 3 steals, but it just wasn't enough. Not much you can do if KD is going to drop 54 on 68% shooting.
