BruceVC Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 I believe in most states they are considered a nuisance. That means no season, no limit, no end to the bacon. But they don't taste like pork. I have found them to be a little gamey. Marinade is a must. Plus as Hurlie pointed out, they are somewhat dangerous so I'd used the most expeditious weapon available to hunt them. Namely a large caliber rifle. We get Warthog in South Africa, its similar to Boar but not as aggressive or big. What specific animals are you allowed to hunt in the state that you live? Guard Dog Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 I believe in most states they are considered a nuisance. That means no season, no limit, no end to the bacon. But they don't taste like pork. Namely a large caliber rifle. We get Warthog in South Africa, its similar to Boar but not as aggressive or big. What specific animals are you allowed to hunt in the state that you live? You can hunt whitetail deer in season, you three tags per season and one has to be a female. Unless you bow hunt, then you get five. You can hunt squirrel & rabbit in season. There is a very limited bear hunt, tags are hard to get. You can also hunt wild turkey in season (or you can go to the bar anytime ). Hogs & Coyotes you can hunt anytime with a license with no limit because they are considered a pest. I don't because 1) I don't care for the taste of these wild hogs 2) I don't eat coyotes so I don't want to shoot them. As long as they leave me and my dogs alone. It's never been a problem though, they only thing they have ever attacked are my grill & garbage cans. I put locks on the cans and chained the grill to one of the porch supports. Problem solved. Gorth Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I know that many people have an objection to hunting on the grounds that it isn't sporting. A bear is a mighty foe, but not if you have a rifle powerful enough to perforate a light armoured vehicle. My question is therefore twofold: 1) Would it be acceptable to permit hunting of animals larger than men, if the men were armed with muscle-powered weapons shorter than their arm? 2) Would it be acceptable to permit hunting of smaller animals (foxes etc.) if the hounds were dachshunds? [i attempted to post some adorable pictures of dachhunds, but the goddamn 'dachshund community' regard pictures of these animals as sacred or something, and won't link externally.] [i am inclined to eat the next dachshund I see, with chilli relish, to even the score] 1) Whatever you can wrestle to the ground and kill with your hands/legs/teeth... 2) Hunting dachshunds would be Ok I suppose, if you turn them into hotdogs. Bring mustard, campfire and sticks to roast the dachshunds on. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Walsingham Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 The dachshunds are the hunting pack, you lunatic! You can't hunt dachshunds! "It wasn't lies. Malcador Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I'm vehemently opposed to hunting of dachshunds, as I have two myself. Also, is funny how every yahoo we encounter on the street thinks he's the first to make a joke on them being 'hot dogs' Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
AGX-17 Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 (edited) As long as it's not an endangered species which is not an imminent threat, it's not done in a cruel fashion and it's not just for the sake of killing whatever's legal to kill (i.e. you're actually going to eat/use what you kill,) I don't see any problem. In fact, it should be encouraged with the prior qualifiers removed when dealing with invasive species (it would simply be oxymoronic to declare an invasive species an endangered species,) which are a threat to the native ecology. Anti hunting people just shift the discussion into the realm of ethics - which are a human concept and have no place in this discussion. Do you have any pets? I think you should be able to guess where this is going. If ethics apply to the pot, why not the kettle? Besides, general human consensus is that animals can be killed "ethically" or "unethically," without regard for your opinion. Just because you weren't bothered by those chinese videos of women crushing live kittens' heads with high heels doesn't mean the majority of humans weren't. That's why there are laws against animal abuse, cruelty, neglect, hoarding and so on. Humans have already officially, systematically applied ethics to the management of the living and natural world, both for ethical and economical reasons. Edited May 22, 2013 by AGX-17
Zoraptor Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 it would simply be oxymoronic to declare an invasive species an endangered species, Strange as it may seem it can happen, and not just in a zoo sense. Possum's are Protected status in Australia (genuine noxious pest, here) and there are at least one Australian frog species and a British Bumblebee that are endangered extinct, as it turns out, at home but relatively common here. The bumblebee at least has actually been reintroduced into parts of Britain, from here.
Walsingham Posted May 22, 2013 Author Posted May 22, 2013 Well, I'm against gratuitous animal cruelty. I think it betrays psychosis more than anything. But as soon as the destination is my stomach, I consider that kosher. I have abnormally large canine teeth and a massive face. It's not for putting carrots in. "It wasn't lies. Amentep Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I had no idea wild boar were so freaking huge. Spearhunting those suckers must take some guts. Also important to note that boars do the most damage with their tusks, which they rake upwards after ramming with their head. If I remember my nature documentaries correctly, the boar's height puts their tusks in the upper leg range which could become problematic for attacks involving short men, really high boars or falling backwards during an upward thrust and getting disemboweled entirely... I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
Gorth Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 There is a risk of camels turning into a pest in Australia. Just waiting for the great "safari" where you can go hunting for feral camels and hang their stuffed heads over the fireplace. Edit: In Hungary, Ass bites you! Apparently, Donkeys are lethal predators in Hungary. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Rosbjerg Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 A lot of my peripheral friends are vegans and animal rights activist and I have to say that a lot of their opinions are often distorted or taken out of context, as we also see somewhat here. Sure you'll no doubt find the air head fanatic that think we should all eat fallen fruit and that animal life is worth more than human life. But often for them the critique usually boils down to the mentality of some modern hunters and especially modern food production. As in we should never murder for sport and should never have animals suffer so horrible as they often do, to satisfy our need for cheap food. These opinions I can respect and agree with, but the staunch anti-hunting for the sake of it is of course stupid. So no, hunt away - but make sure that you do it with respect for the animal and do it for the hunt and meat, not for the sport of the kill. Would be my 2 cents. Besides if we didn't hunt the animals would overpopulate and get sick, nature needs prey and predators - we can just choose to be nice about it. Fortune favors the bald.
