AGX-17
Having grown up in the 8 and 16 bit eras, melodic and catchy songs are what do it for me. Japanese compositions seem to fit the bill better than anything else. I feel Western video game soundtracks try too hard to stay in the background, but as any playwright or film director can tell you, music can be just as vital to a story as dialogue and imagery. I honestly couldn't hum a theme from a western game other than the elder scrolls theme, Deus Ex, Halo or some tracks from warcraft 2. Right now this is all I need: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCUeVmboXtk Edited October 9, 2012 by AGX-

HoonDing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ertvporcCZI&fmt=18 One of the most scintillating OSTs I ever heard. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

Freddo
My favorite Tri-Ace song (well, Motoi Sakuraba song since he's behind the vast majority of music in all Tri-Ace games) is easily the end credits song for Star Ocean 2 for the PS1; We form in crystals. I think it's absolutely brilliant, and one of my favorite songs of all time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boRCmchdgP0
AGX-17
Any one of those games has an ironclad 10/10 for soundtrack. Might be easier on you guys to hear it like this:
Fish Of Doom
i am WAY too fond of the soundtrack to black moon chronicles for my own good. example: meshes quite well with other games as well. i also love this track from dune 1: as well as most of the music from PS:T (particularly deionarra's theme) and the main theme from BG2. Gorth
i am WAY too fond of the soundtrack to black moon chronicles for my own good. example: I remember reading those in graphic novel form back in the 80'es (translated from the original French). Never know they made a video game for them. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Never know they made a video game for them. it's a simple but pretty neat strategy game. they tried to make an MMORPG called winds of war as well, but i dunno what came out of that one. WWTNOD? Zeckul
I'm surprised no one mentioned Diablo 2. It's easily the best video game music I've ever heard on several levels. The predominance of texture and overall atmosphere over melody, the unique, incredibly varied, live-yet-not-live sounding instrumentation (I don't know how to describe it), ominous, oppressive atmosphere like none I've ever heard - this music more than supplemented the experience, it defined it. I've been listening to it since I discovered the game 10 years ago and I'm still in awe. Inyourprime
Oh wow, eh, wow. Decisions, decisions. I have more than my fair share of songs I still listen to, but I'll try to keep it short : - - - - - Deus Ex: Hum Revolution - Icarus - - - (Love this song ) - Yoshi's Story - Yoshi's Happy Song - - - Skyrim - The Streets of Whiterun - (Jeremy Soule's best work, in my opinion) - (Not really a "track" per se, but I had this as my ringtone for a while. I added 'Sucka!' ) - Mass Effect - Uncharted Worlds - - Torchlight 2 - Enclave Morning - Torchlight 2 - Djinn - - - - - -- I think that's it for me. I have more so I may revisit this thread. Edit: Ohhhh, one more! - Edited October 18, 2012 by Inyourprime
Zeckul
- (Jeremy Soule's best work, in my opinion) Yes! It's even better in-game with the ambient sounds and the lush visuals. melkathi
i also love this track from dune 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrpNq9iT87w as well as most of the music from PS:T (particularly deionarra's theme) and the main theme from BG2. Spice Opera was a fantastic soundtrack. Got all of it in my playlist, though I prefer Chani's Eyes: Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise). CheeseGraterSuicide
Sure, I could list a bunch of good game soundtracks from over the years, but I thought instead I'd shed some light on a little-known orchestral remake I found awhile back. It's the city theme from Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun for the Sega Genesis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG2z6HcVQDY
