Having grown up in the 8 and 16 bit eras, melodic and catchy songs are what do it for me. Japanese compositions seem to fit the bill better than anything else. I feel Western video game soundtracks try too hard to stay in the background, but as any playwright or film director can tell you, music can be just as vital to a story as dialogue and imagery. I honestly couldn't hum a theme from a western game other than the elder scrolls theme, Deus Ex, Halo or some tracks from warcraft 2.

Right now this is all I need:

There used to be a signature here, a really cool one...and now it's gone.

My favorite Tri-Ace song (well, Motoi Sakuraba song since he's behind the vast majority of music in all Tri-Ace games) is easily the end credits song for Star Ocean 2 for the PS1; We form in crystals. I think it's absolutely brilliant, and one of my favorite songs of all time.

Any one of those games has an ironclad 10/10 for soundtrack. Might be easier on you guys to hear it like this:

i am WAY too fond of the soundtrack to black moon chronicles for my own good. example:

meshes quite well with other games as well.

i also love this track from dune 1:

as well as most of the music from PS:T (particularly deionarra's theme) and the main theme from BG2.

I remember reading those in graphic novel form back in the 80'es (translated from the original French). Never know they made a video game for them.

it's a simple but pretty neat strategy game. they tried to make an MMORPG called winds of war as well, but i dunno what came out of that one.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Diablo 2. It's easily the best video game music I've ever heard on several levels. The predominance of texture and overall atmosphere over melody, the unique, incredibly varied, live-yet-not-live sounding instrumentation (I don't know how to describe it), ominous, oppressive atmosphere like none I've ever heard - this music more than supplemented the experience, it defined it. I've been listening to it since I discovered the game 10 years ago and I'm still in awe. Matt Uelmen <3

Yes! It's even better in-game with the ambient sounds and the lush visuals. Icewind Dale is such a delight!

Spice Opera was a fantastic soundtrack. Got all of it in my playlist, though I prefer Chani's Eyes:

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

I know I've already posted it (in this thread!) but I don't care as I am listening to it right now. Because it's awesome.

Sure, I could list a bunch of good game soundtracks from over the years, but I thought instead I'd shed some light on a little-known orchestral remake I found awhile back. It's the city theme from Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun for the Sega Genesis.

Nice twist on the Terminator's bassy undertones. Especially for a system that didn't have fantastic audio capability.
