Drowsy Emperor Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 (edited) Obviously you're not going to camp corners all the time, most of the time a good sniper is enough to get rid of almost every enemy in JA2. I'm not complaining, its just a game - if it had anything to do with real life your team would be dead come the first encounter on account of trying to start a revolution in a foreign country armed only with handguns. Turn based games are even less realistic than real time ones, so the only thing XCom needs to do is be fun and challenging and that should be enough. Starwars Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I too will cancel my pre-order because they included a tutorial. How dare they? How... dare... they... ?!?!? 3 Listen to my home-made recordings (some original songs, some not): http://www.youtube.c...low=grid&view=0
Majek Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) Well that's Morgoth in a nutshell. Jumping to conclusions is his forte. :D edit: Or maybe he did read it and No Alien base invasion made him think about canceling. But that's just not like him . Morgoth Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 No worries, I read the whole thing. It's just not very encouraging overall. Small maps, disorientating camera, teletubby graphics....well, better wait for a demo and real reviews before I buy - if at all. @Majek Save your little personal attacks for other occasions. Rain makes everything better.
Drowsy Emperor Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I have faith in Firaxis, they have a good track record. (Meaning they made SMAC so they get a free pass from me.) Morgoth Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 40 hour Hands-On preview of XCOM @RPS My doubts have been eased, but not entirely diminished. Rain makes everything better.
Morgoth Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 7 min gameplay video from the PC version - UFO retrieval mission. Rain makes everything better.
Malcador Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Suitably positive previews. Also, tutorials are for the weak. 1 Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
Drowsy Emperor Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I like it, its looking good. Hope there is a toggle for all the little cinematic camera effects because I foresee them becoming really annoying after a while. И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,И његова сва изгибе војска, Седамдесет и седам иљада;Све је свето и честито билоИ миломе Богу приступачно.
Majek Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 I've read somewhere a few days ago that you can turn it off completely. Hopefully that was accurate info. 1.13 killed off Ja2.
Hurlshort Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Yes, the cinematic camera is an option that can be disabled.
Drowsy Emperor Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Good thing the graphics aren't too intensive, this should run on my system without a hitch. Next, Alpha Centauri remake please. Without major gameplay changes if at all possible. И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,И његова сва изгибе војска, Седамдесет и седам иљада;Све је свето и честито билоИ миломе Богу приступачно.
Hurlshort Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/13/video-from-x-com-to-xcom/ Cool comparison video.
Morgoth Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 The XCOM demo has been released on Steam. Rain makes everything better.
Majek Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 (edited) Hopefully there will be a demo on ps3 too, even if it's a few days before the release date. ediT: Gamepot Livestream for XCOM right now! Edited September 24, 2012 by Majek 1.13 killed off Ja2.
alanschu Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I'm just biding my time playing random games until this comes out.
Morgoth Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 That demo was pretty worthless. It's completely railroaded that you can finish in 10 minutes. Rain makes everything better.

Starwars Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 (edited) Such wit! Anyways, a bit disappointing, but not unexpected, that it's basically the tutorial stuff. Still, gives a good view of how it controls and all that. It feels slightly clunky to me, especially some of the movement (is there a free camera, or just the locked camera angles with Q and E?). But it's also a pretty involved game so I think one will grow into the controls quite quickly. Still... I must say that I had higher expectations on the PC stuff. It doesn't feel completely intuitive to me. Main disappointment so far for me was actually the music which I feel is... well, too close to Deus Ex Human Revolution really. I don't think it feels particularly fitting for X-Com. But I have to say that I'm almost 100% sure that this game will provide a lot of entertainment for me. Serrano Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 That demo was pretty worthless. It's completely railroaded that you can finish in 10 minutes. A five gig download for roughly ten minuets of tutorial? Say it ain't so Mo.
Starwars Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 It's one railroaded tutorial and then one very simple mission after that. Basically, if you have followed the game thus far (seen some gameplay, read some interview, maybe watcher a dev walkthrough) then it's pretty unnecessary to download the demo. entrerix Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 the mission really takes only ten minutes? Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. I am there. and the other player is there. and it's just the two of us. and I put the other player's body in my van. and I am the winner. - Nice Pete.
Serrano Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 (edited) Seems to me like it would have been better to have a single level multiplayer demo with pre-made squads rather than the turorial and hand holding missions. Oh well, Borderlands 2 awaits. Edited September 24, 2012 by Serrano
