It is now the longest day of the year, Christmas is not too far away, and it's the middle of summer here in Australia.

 

That doesn't seem to matter to the weather. A few days ago it was flooding all over the place (still is in some states). Right now it is snowing in the mountains nearby and the apparent temperature yesterday fell as low as -3.4 degrees Celsius.

 

On the other hand, the sun is still extremely strong so it's very easy to get sunburnt, as I found out when I went swimming at Manly beach in Sydney yesterday even though the temperature was only about 15 degrees in the middle of the day.

 

5 days ago I had my fan on so I could fall asleep at night. Last night I had my heater on before bed and extra layers of blankets.

 

Just thought I'd share this insanity with you all.

Rain is normally something I associate with Sydney dammit, never been to Sydney without getting more or less drowned by showers, summer or winter. My one and only umbrella (which South Aussies think is something to protect yourself against the sun with) was bought in a small convenience store years ago in Sydney, when finally learning that lesson.

 

It has been been unusally cold and stormy here for a couple of weeks, but now things looks like a return to "normal" over the holidays. It had that rather wintery feel to it for a long time there. Saves a lot of electricity though

Haha! Apparently it's caused by a cold front colliding with a low pressure system, one of which is from Antarctica.

 

Frankly I was kind of looking forward this month to that feeling of walking outside at 8am to go to work and feeling like I was entering an oven. Oh well, next month hopefully.

I'm glad the flooding ended before my home became a waterfront property, because it was awfully close.

Snow just doesn't happen in Wellington, damnit. We get super rain/wind combination instead, Gorth it was a one-day summary of the bloody city. Called for a good curry.

I was a bit disappointed with Daawat when I was there the last time about a year ago. The curry was still great and they still make the best Naan in the southern hemisphere, but they've changed the look of the place. Almost posh. I miss the ramshackle, slightly worn look of the old Daawat.

They know me by name and last time there was a big Indian birthday party with some respectable old gentleman in traditional clothes (inc. headgear), and they had me stay and watch some amateur magic show.

You know, Sydney does have that going for it - so much amazing food. I couldn't walk far without running into a restaurant with exotic food from an exotic country - Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Germany, Greece, Singapore, Nepal, Italy, Turkey.

 

It became a bit of a problem at one point when all I wanted was some potato wedges and couldn't find a fish and chip shop for the life of me.

You know, Sydney does have that going for it - so much amazing food. I couldn't walk far without running into a restaurant with exotic food from an exotic country - Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Lebanon, Ethiopia, Germany, Greece, Singapore, Nepal, Italy, Turkey.

I once got lost in Sydney, ended up in what looked like a predominantly asian part of the inner city. I couldn't read most of the signs, but the food (whatever it was) was awesome.

Ironically, my right-wing friend linked to it on her Facebook. She studies ocean science. Global warming is far less of a bipartisan issue over here. It's tiresome at points but it makes enough very valid points about the stupidity of global warming deniers to be worth circulating.

The reason I referenced global warming is that whenever there's unusually hot weather somewhere or some kind of catasrophic weather event it's invarialbly used as proof of global warming. In fact the warmists were going on and on how this was going to be the warmest year on record because the first half was unusually warm.

The weather here is pretty normal. Lots of snow and -20 degrees at the moment. According to the latest forecast, we should have -33 by christmas morning, which is a bit too much.

Maybe I misread the article. I thought it was talking about El Nina, not necessarily global warming, and predictions for cold weather until March, which I consider interesting and useful.

He's explaining why the first half of the year was unusually warm, and the second half is likely to be unusually cold. Whether that has anything to do with global warming or not is a matter of opinion.

More and intenser weather extremes were and are a predicted result of global warming. While this may seem counter-intuitive to some lay people it is a rather mundane notion among climate scientists.
