Mamoulian War Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 (edited) What's wrong with charging a smaller amount upfront and then having to pay for the parts if you like it? If it comes up to a normal game's cost and length you'll end up saving money if the game sucks, no? It might lead to games being frontloaded, but that's pretty much the case anyway. EDIT: This is assuming that all the parts of the game are completed at release. Or what about using already established way of distributing incomplete software? You get part of it for free, and if you like you buy the cut-off content... Shareware worked great for id Software and Apogee... Purkake Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Maybe they ship a game without the exe file so that you have to pay extra for that. It would be hilarious. Bioshock did that and probably quite a few other Online Securom using games. @ all the hate. There is nothing wrong with the idea itself.

All that changes in this case is the initial investment. As for paying for demos, we hardly ever get demos any more. The model you describe would be a ye olde "screw the second hand market" trick, if the cost comes out the same in the end, it doesn't really matter other than being slightly less convenient. Niten_Ryu Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 PC Zone UK magazine is to shut after 17 years I bought few PC Zone magazines before the internet was common in early 90's. Content was usually garbage but before the internet (and if you didn't ware). demoCDs or floppies were important. For some reason or other finnish magazines at that time didn't have demodisks. Well, PC gaming is just about dead so no wonder PC Zone died. Let's play Alpha Protocol My misadventures on youtube.

Purkake Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Indeed, second hand sales are hurting publishers as much as piracy is and they would love to get rid of it.

This assumption is only true if people sell their games to stores, and then buy new copies of the game. Having worked in game stores, second hand game sales make a killing. And we'd happily buy back that used copy of the game, for some guy to buy a used copy of another new game that just came out.

Purkake Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Here's an article on second hand sales and piracy. The car analogy is somewhat flawed because making each car cost money, giving each individual copy a significant value. On the other hand you can copy data infinitely and perfectly for a negligible cost.
