Morgoth Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 But why not just make it a new franchise? There's no difference. It's all about building up hype. Have the "old" players raging and moaning around sort of also creates hype and awarenes. It worked with Fallout 3. Rain makes everything better.

Rostere Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Deja vu! And to think someone would get this stupid idea again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-COM:_Enforcer Geez, you really are stubborn. Shooters have increasingly got better and better. Remember trash like Quake, Doom and Blood (no story, boring level design) and compare it with what Monolith, Valve or Irrational does today. Seriously, dude. Don't talk **** about those games. Only a month or so since I last played Blood. It's an excellent game, with a lot more character than games in general have today. "Well, overkill is my middle name. And my last name. And all of my other names as well!"

It's an excellent game, with a lot more character than games in general have today. Just because you and your two friends enjoy that old nonsense won't mean that publishers suddendly decide to go back and make old-fashioned corridor shooters again that only require you to use 4 keys and 1 mouse button. 213374U Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Doesn't AvP already cover that market segment?AvP had squadies? He may have been referring to Gearbox's Alien: Colonial Marines. As for the game in question, I'll just wait and see. Most cross-platform shooters are turds without any redeeming qualities, though. So chances are Morgy will get his fix. \o/ - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Slowtrain Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Didn't Bioshock 2 pretty much suck? No it didn't. News at 11. Seems to me I recall a concensus that while the combat was better, pretty much everything else was much worse. The game brought nothing to the table except arcade powers and stuff. Slowtrain Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Have you played it yourself? Did you hate Bioshock1? Chances are if you did, you'll also hate BS2. Nope. Bioshock was a terrible game. Wasn't going to spend my money on BS2 after the wretched experience that was BS1. But I'm not talking about me, just recalling what the general take on BS 2 was when it was released. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. Morgoth Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 But I'm not talking about me, just recalling what the general take on BS 2 was when it was released. Critically it was pretty good, it also sold buckets of money, the old fans hated it but it also created new fans. Overall, I liked it more than BS1, but I guess I'm in the minority there. Rain makes everything better.
Slowtrain Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 But I'm not talking about me, just recalling what the general take on BS 2 was when it was released. Critically it was pretty good, it also sold buckets of money, the old fans hated it but it also created new fans. From what I understand though, it focused on the arcade shooter elements of the gameplay and didn't another much (or at all) with the developing or expanding on more serious story-telling aspect of BS1. Doesn't give me much faith that they can create a intense, narrativedriven game based on the XCOM IP. What it tells me is that XCOM FPS will be an arcade shooter. Personally, I don't care much what they call. XCom is just a name, it doesn't mean a game will be good or bad. But a developer's track record is a lot more indicitive of how the game will turn out. Overall, I liked it more than BS1, but I guess I'm in the minority there. No one says you can't like a game. Liek is personal. I liked STALKER a lot more than Bioshock. You didn't. That's fine. Meshugger Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 XCom was incredible back when i was a kid. Shooters however? Meh, meh, meh, meh. Often crappy atmosphere and sense of scope. - Doom 1 & 2 and Quake 1,2,3 were ok, but nothing that you really cared about outside some fun with your friends. - Unreal 1 was sublime, it was the reason that i started to appriciate shooters as a serious genre in gaming. Incredible all the way through. Transcended the genre. - System Shock 2 was an andrenaline rush. Excelling within the same areas as Unreal 1. Intense atmosphere. - Unreal Tournament 1 was fun with your friends + it had some of the vibe of Unreal 1. - Half-life was a brown, red and grey combination of bore, same with its successor(s). - Halo: CE had the same impact as Unreal 1. Trancended the genre, and truly was Combat Evolved back in the day. Made my personal shooter-meter go through the roof. Halo 2 and 3 were real turds though. - Deus Ex 1 transcended the genre for other reasons than Halo. More like System Shock 2. Unparalelled. - NOLF 1, 2 were ok, but nothing special. - Serious Sam was not that serius. - Fear 1 was ok, but gimmickly. Nice A.I. though. Nothing special in the long run. - Doom III and Quake IV? hahahah. - Bioshock. Pretty, nice art design and ideas (= A MAN CHOOSES, A SLAVE OBEYS). Failed in everything else. (I never finished System Shock 1(slow comp. at the time), nor any of the Thief games(crashing non-stop)) So there you have it: The only worthwhile shooters than have been released during the last 20 years have been: Unreal 1, System Shock 2, Deus Ex 1 and Halo CE. I have very little confidence that XCom: pew-pew-edition will be anything interesting.
