Killian Kalthorne Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Given all the fearmongering the Republicans are spouting about socialism, lets see what happens if you remove all aspects of socialism in the United States. 1. No more public education. All schools would be privatized and would no longer get any government funds nor would any family get any funds to put their children in those schools. We would have vast hordes of uneducated running about, but those who can afford the $5,000 to $15,000 a year tuition schools would no doubt charge would have smaller class sizes. This would also remove all grants and student loans provided and covered by the government as well. 2. Emergency Services would be all privatized. Each person would need to cover his or her own security, no doubt increasing gun sales and armored vests, along with providing his or her own way to stop fires and getting themselves to a hospital. It would be like the old west, something any true gun eunthusiast would love. 3. The military would be disbanded because that is one of the biggest socialist institutions in our government. Government funded security, government funded healthcare, government funded housing, and so forth and so on. Can't have any of that. 4. Removal of all farm subsidies would be needed. If a mom and pop farm cannot maintain itself as a viable competitor to a corporate farm then that is its problem, right? Why should the government pay for their failures and while we are at it any regulations on corporate farms should be removed as well. Why get in the way of business when the environment is concerned. That's socialist talk. 5. Medicare, Social Security, and Welfare would be removed as would WIC and similar programs. If the elderly, women and children, are too poor to take care of themselves let them die. Right. To have the government provide anything for them would be socialism and we cannot have that. Add in the removal of any regulations on businesses and companies, and give absolutely no support and rights to the individual would be right up the Republicans wet dream. Lets remove all socialism in the USA! "Your Job is not to die for your country, but set a man on fire, and take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
Pidesco Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Well, the military is funded to protect the government, so I'm not sure if it qualifies as a socialist institution. Orogun01 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I think it would be a lot like Cuba before the '59; the middle upper class and the economy would rise at the expense of the great poverty of the lower classes. It's the scenario in which Marx theories on social revolution would be most present; such as it was the case with Cuba. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.
Killian Kalthorne Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 I am just saying that if Republicans want to make sure that we have no socialism in our nation we must get rid of all the socialistic aspects we already have. "Your Job is not to die for your country, but set a man on fire, and take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
Gorgon Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 The Republicans used to call the opposition 'Communists' because it was a convenient label with negative connotations, now that that nolonger has even the pretense of sounding genuine it's 'Socialist'. Every society known to man has some degree of redistribution, and that's what it really boils down to. We are talking about A : degrees, and B : labels. I want teh kotor 3 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Only Sith deal in absolutes! This. I'm not a big fan of socialism, to say the least, but even I admit that some socialistic elements (public education, roads, military, and police) must exist. Mikhailian Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 snip It wouldn't be the gop's wet dream, it would actually be Ron Paul's wet dream. The gop pays lip service to the concept of fiscal responsibility just to get the votes of those that that appeals to, just like they pay lip sevice to supporting small businesses and being pro family values. It doesn't really mean anything, and a lot of the time it's just political sleight of hand so you don't see what they're really up to. But for all of us, there will come a point where it does matter, and it's gonna be like having a miniature suit-head shoving sticks up your butt all the time. - Tigranes

Humodour Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 I'm waiting for some sort of beleaguered justification from the Libertarians. Namely taks and the other guy. (Something to do with dogs? I always confuse him with GreasyDogMeat.)
lord of flies Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 That's not socialism. Socialism is about political and economic egalitarianism. That's just government use of power. Ooh, look at that military, I'm sure it's being used to spread political and economic egalitarianism instead of promoting US interests abroad.

I want teh kotor 3 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) I'm waiting for some sort of beleaguered justification from the Libertarians. Namely taks and the other guy. (Something to do with dogs? I always confuse him with GreasyDogMeat.) I'm a Libertarian. What was originally suggested isn't libertarianism, its anarchism. They're not the same. Most libertarians agree that most of government needs to go, but that some is necessary. EDIT: From the OP, the steps suggested in 1 2 and 3 are bad. 4 5 and 6 (just calling it that) should be enacted. I want teh kotor 3 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 What was originally suggested isn't libertarianism, its anarchism. No, it's not. Yes, it is. The OP suggests the removal of nearly all government functions. That is, for all intents and purposes, anarchism.
