I tell you what... we'll trade you. You take Brown we'll take Obama.

Thats not fair. You're going to have to throw in a few cases of Bass and all of the players from the Manchester United for our World Cup team.

So, to be clear, you're saying you'll take Manchester United AND Gordon Brown AND some substandard ale?

Isn't Obama British anyway since he was born in Kenya when it was still a British colony?

Btw, the Boers won the Boer War, the Spartans won at Thermopylae, and the Texans won at the Alamo!

Obama doesn't scare me one bit. If the Republicans can get a fiscal conservative/social liberal running for president they will have my vote otherwise it is going to Obama. Sarah Palin scares me more than any other candidate and there is no way I will vote for someone like that. That includes Huckabee and Romney.

EPIC WIN!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I need to start Nobama 2012 already.

More like an attempt at humor. And he's not a communist, but in terms of "American" politics his socialisim meter is definitely in the red.
No, he isn't. Don't talk about things you clearly don't understand.

Really? He's not socialist? So what do you] call his economic policies? Stealing from the rich to give money to the poor with the intent to level the playing field is socialism, plain and simple.

Stealing from the rich? What the frak do you call his bailout money he sent out. Giving companies billions. If that isn't helping those rich CEOs who still got their bonuses I don't know what it is.

I was refering more to his campaign promises, i.e. to raise the taxes on anyone making over $200k, because they're all evidently evil; I couldn't refer to any actions of his, because he hasn't actually done anything.

Evil? No you misrepresent the idea of a welfare liberal. One who makes that much money owes something back to society because he is a product of society also because he might of won the genetic lottery. We are all connected in society. That is the viewpoint of the welfare liberal.

I am more concerned about laissez faire capitalism personally. Where its not the tyranny of the majority but the tryanny of a few big corporations, the later which has no interest of utility at all. Bush did more to help Laissez faire capitialism then any other president before his lack of regulations.

Raising taxes on the rich is perfectly natural, under various pre-Reagan administrations, the highest tax brackets paid over 70% of their income. It has nothing to with socialism. Socialism is about killing the monster that is capitalism; this sort of milquetoast progressivism is about keeping the monster fed, but less than might otherwise happen.

Plus, it doesn't matter since he hasn't actually followed through.

Why do I owe money to society because I went to college? (Figurative "me", BTW)

Promises from politicians are irrelevant. Actions are the only thing that matters.

Right, so then Obama has no affiliation, because he hasn't actually done anything.

Since when is capitalism a "monster?" I highly doubt that anybody in their sane mind voted for a president that intended to tax them 70%. I know I sure as hell wouldn't.

For that matter, why does something having been done before make it "natural?" By that logic, witch hunts are "natural," as are antisemitism, racism, slavery, etc.

Since... forever?
I highly doubt that anybody in their sane mind voted for a president that intended to tax them 70%. I know I sure as hell wouldn't.
Beyond the brief period of economic neo-liberalization in the 20s, the highest tax bracket generally paid over 70%.
For that matter, why does something having been done before make it "natural?" By that logic, witch hunts are "natural," as are antisemitism, racism, slavery, etc.
lol yeah antisemitism, racism, and slavery are just like taxing the rich. Except the abolition of slavery and creation of a racially equal nation were pushed for by progressives, whereas progressives recognize that extreme class struggle is inevitable without serious measures taken against it (i.e. the creation of a strong social safety net for the "wage slaves"). Do you not understand how society works or something? Do you think that if you don't tax the rich, nothing bad will happen?

No. Without capitalism America would arguably never have become a superpower.

Good for them. How many rich people voted for them? I'll wager none.

If by progressives you mean Karl "worst idea in history" Marx, then yeah, progressives are all about class conflict. I've noticed that countries that follow him usually end up collapsing.

No, I don't think the rich shouldn't be taxed. I don;t think they should be taxed to a higher percent than the other social groups, just because they're rich.

Gallup has it at 40% or so. Rasmussen always has a Republican lean.

Either way, it's no big deal. Reagan and Bush and pretty much every president has dropped before 50% support during there terms and been re-elected. I'd be extremely surprised if Obama didn't serve 2 terms.

The problem is that America doesn't have a fiscally conservative party, just a socially conservative party and a socially liberal party.

I believe because you owe it to the welfare of others less fortunate since you were given a better chance then others in society and it was society on top of perhaps the luck of a genetic lottery to what parents you were born to, either of which you had no choice of deciding, thus its not because of you that you became who you are but that your a product of genes and society. Nature and Nurture. It kind of suggests we are all connected, we are blank slates to some degree, some parents are richer then others, ect... Not that I back it or not. Im just sharing this idea. Good question.

lol no. Without the Mississippi basin, maybe. If Russia could become a world superpower via planned industrialization, so could the United States.
Good for them. How many rich people voted for them? I'll wager none.
Yeah, because the rich all voted for third parties, I guess. Because the rich are all retarded.
If by progressives you mean Karl "worst idea in history" Marx, then yeah, progressives are all about class conflict. I've noticed that countries that follow him usually end up collapsing.
lol you have no ****ing idea about anything. Progressives believe that class conflict can be gently corrected, without the removal of classes; Marxists, on the other hand, believe in the complete destruction of the class system.
No, I don't think the rich shouldn't be taxed. I don;t think they should be taxed to a higher percent than the other social groups, just because they're rich.
The rich can pay more, and if you think rich people work harder for their money than poor people, you're retarded.

I'd say it depends more on who the Republicans choose to run against him. Bush was re-elected because his opposition was fairly weak. But it's also way to early to make that call, if the economy turns around in the next two years, he's got it made, if it doesn't it will be a close race.

I thought most Americans only care about themselves and no one else. Why should an American care about someone else because they didn't pull up their bootstraps or Bra straps? Suck it up or put your big girl panties on! As the saying goes.

If you want to have a pity party, then please ask for a table for one in the no-joking section because no one wants to be around you if you can't get ahead in life and be successful. :*

My father pulled himself up by his bootstraps and earns over $200K a year and worked all his life to get where he is! He's a Plumber and runs a successful Small Plumbing business, but you want small business to be taxed and according to you my dad is rich and should give his money to those who are poor. Well boo hoo, because this is America and if you're born into poverty, with a disability, etc, then that's your problem, not mine! o:)

I sometimes work the phone banks in my area when the school district needs to pass a parcel tax. We often get the argument that "my kids went to private schools" or "I don't have children". The response to that is the value of your property is tied directly to how well the schools do, so if they aren't funded adequately, then the value of your land will drop.

But it doesn't just end with property values, you can go on and on making connections to what programs your taxes fund and how they can affect you personally. Do you get a cost of living increase in your salary? Do you drive on the roads? Do you ever use public transit? It goes on and on.

I'm not saying there aren't stupid programs funded, I live near San Francisco and Berkeley after all, but many taxes have very legitimate positives for you personally.

Finland recently passed a bill enshrining the right to internet access of 1 mbps or faster. In a comment in reply on a news article about it, I read this. It reminds me of Wrath of Dagon, except unfortunately WoD is actually serious.

Those backward Finns. They don't realize that this makes them less free. I suppose they have health care for everyone over there and think it's a good thing. I bet people get free education through college in Finland, too. What a shame.

Thank god I live in a country where I'm free to lose my home if my wife or kid gets sick, just as our Founding Fathers intended. Now that's liberty. At least until that horrible President Hussein Osama forces us to have health insurance and we become a pitiful third-world country like Finland.

You can have my overpriced, traffic-shaped, capped DSL when you wrest it from my cold, dead hands.

Oh, and God Bless America.
