I need help please

Hi all,

So, my gf got herself a new pc with windows vista on it and she is having problems sending her word files to other people. I haven't seen her pc yet but she is telling me that there's microsoft works installed on it.

She needs to send a file to one of her professors but there's some compatibility problem. She sent it to me too and it was saved as a .wps file on my pc and shows some weird characters and symbols instead of text (this mostly happens in the footnotes). I tried to save the file as a .doc one but there were no changes.

Can someone please help me with this? I have uploaded the file so that you may tinker with it.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers.

According to the first link Google pulls up:

.WPS File Extension2 File Associations

TIP: Run a free scan for .WPS file extension errors.

File Type 1 Microsoft Works Word Processor Document (Most common)

Popularity Very Common

Category Text Files

File Description Text document created with Microsoft Works Word Processor; similar to Microsoft Word (.DOC) document, but does not include advanced formatting options and macros that a Word document may contain; can be opened with most versions of Microsoft Word (included with Microsoft Office) as well as Microsoft Publisher.

The Macintosh version of Microsoft Works was discontinued after version 4.0; the WPS format itself was discontinued by Microsoft in 2006 and replaced by the standard MS Word DOC format.

NOTE: To open WPS files from within Microsoft Publisher, you may need to select "Word 2000" or "All File Types" in the Open dialog box.

Program(s) that open wps files:

Planamesa NeoOffice 2.2 or later

Convert with DataViz MacLinkPlus

Windows Microsoft Works

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Publisher

It also states that Microsoft dropped that format 3 years ago so I dont know whats up with her still having it on a new PC.

Well I have Vista and installed OpenOffice. The download isnt THAT big(its about 133MB+) and it solved my compability problems, i can send files written in OpenOffice to other people and they can open them in Word with no problems.

I'm not seeing the file but if you do upload it I'd be happy to convert it (I have Works, Word 2005, Word 2007, and Open Office on my laptop). :p

Thanks a lot for the offer! :)

The upload fails though on these boards and I get the following message "Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file".

I uploaded it on rapidshare for ease-of-use:

To keep things simple, I suggest you do the same after you are done converting the file.

Thanks again!

Our University, as all others Ive heard of, has a pretty friggin strict code that all documents must be sent in *.PDF which cant be read with full formatting, pictures, embedded fonts and everything on all platforms, from linux to a friggin cellphone. She should start using PDF instead and save herself a lot of trouble.

i agree with kaftan on this 100%. barring the ridiculously expensive full version of acrobat, i use the free cutepdf and it works quite well, if you're interested in a PDF maker.

That is a good idea actually. I will suggest it to her.
