April 11, 200916 yr ...why these forums are still open? Wasn't that game supposed to be canceled, or will we get first the official memo from Sega before that happens? Rain makes everything better.
April 12, 200916 yr I have to say that I take this as extremely bad news. Not really because I was a huge fan of the the Aliens RPG idea, although I'm sure that I would have purchased the title. The real reason is that Mr. Sawyer has been kind to me personally in a particular undertaking on my part and to him lose a project like this absolutely sucks. I also had the benefit of seeing some of the game footage, which put my fears regarding an Aliens RPG to rest. I think it would have been a quality title assuming it progressed as I saw it at the time. You never know what will happen, though, and I'm hopeful that some of the work that went into the Aliens RPG might be useful in developing other games. More to the point, maybe this speculation is premature and the game is still in the works. In any event, I'm forced to admit some amount of personal biased towards Sawyer. I hope we get to see some of his work on this title come to the consumer in one way or another. I will certainly purchase it if given the opportunity. April 14, 200916 yr The forum is still open because the game has not been officially canned. Such announcements can affect share prices as a instance, which is why it's a strategic decision. I'm not saying it's going to make much of a difference for such a major publisher, but too many cancellations at the same time could generate a negative vibe. So, limbo it is. April 15, 200916 yr You wouldn't have to officially cancel a game to shut down its stagnant forum. It's not as if keeping it up is calling the game's fate into question. The devs no longer post. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!
April 15, 200916 yr Author You wouldn't have to officially cancel a game to shut down its stagnant forum. It's not as if keeping it up is calling the game's fate into question. The devs no longer post. But it could mislead newcomers to think that it's still in development. But I guess E3 is the latest when we should hear news from Sega about the Aliens franchise... Rain makes everything better.
April 15, 200916 yr I'm hoping that developement of the Alien crpg is simply shut down pending the outcome of Alpha Protocol. If the remaining development of AP goes smoothly and the game sells well and starts bringing in money, then Sega refunds the Alien project. If not then Sega pulls the plug for good and drops Obsidian as a developer. I'm sure that such is just wishful thinking on my part, but I would love to see this game happen. So until we get official word and./or the forum is shut down, I wil just keep right on hoping. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
April 15, 200916 yr Author By that time Josh and team would already be deeply involved in another project, and I don't think pulling them out and back to Aliens would be a very productive decision. Still, I'll take an Aliens RPG over some NWN3 anytime and anywhere. Rain makes everything better.
April 15, 200916 yr I don't think Obsidian would say no to any source of funding. And yeah, AP doing well would help their case a lot. Edited April 15, 200916 yr by Wrath of Dagon "Moral indignation is a standard strategy for endowing the idiot with dignity." Marshall McLuhan
April 18, 200916 yr Author If AP sells well, it will only help them making an AP2, not Aliens. Rain makes everything better.
April 18, 200916 yr Why? If they show SEGA that their original game can do well, surely a licensed game would do even better? "Moral indignation is a standard strategy for endowing the idiot with dignity." Marshall McLuhan
April 18, 200916 yr Author The issue however is that Sega wasn't happy how Aliens turned out to be, so why would they throw money at Obsidian again if Sega doesn't believe in it? If AP sells, there will be more AP. Aliens is as good as dead. Rain makes everything better.
April 19, 200916 yr We don't really know what the issue was. I suspect it had more to do with Sega being unable to finance two unproven projects. If Obsidian can show that they can make a profitable game, that would count in their favor. "Moral indignation is a standard strategy for endowing the idiot with dignity." Marshall McLuhan
April 19, 200916 yr I think the project was "sacrificed" which implies that They liked how it came up. But weren't able to finance both or stuff. Edited April 19, 200916 yr by ikarop
April 20, 200916 yr ...I also wonder. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
April 20, 200916 yr Having seen Alien as a midnight movie over the weekend (if you ever have the chance to do this, take it) I shall bring this game to fruition by the sheer force of my will. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!
April 20, 200916 yr Maybe they've just hit a creative rough spot and can't decide which crates to use in the game.. and is holding back any information until they reach an agreement. I hope.. Fortune favors the bald.
April 20, 200916 yr I find it somewhat hard to comprehend why Sega would flush millions of dollars of development down the toilet by canceling the game, unless they were really really disatisfied with what Obsidian had produced. With 2 projects being worked on by the same developer and with both running into developmental problems (apparently), it DOES make sense to suspend one project (the one least close to completion), combine all resources into the other project, finish that project, observe the results and then make a decision on whether to return to the first project or not. there's no reason why Josh would have to return as the project lead. SOmeone new could come in and take over. But still probably just wishful thinking on my part. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. April 21, 200916 yr This is from one of the funcroc links posted in Fallout: New Vegas thread. It says Aliens: Crucible is on "indefinite hold". This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.
April 21, 200916 yr This is from one of the funcroc links posted in Fallout: New Vegas thread. It says Aliens: Crucible is on "indefinite hold". That's just pulled from Kotaku, so it's still speculation. Oh Jimmy, you were so funny. Don't let me down. From habit he lifts his watch; it shows him its blank face. Zero hour, Snowman thinks. I was always under the impression that AP and Aliens were worked seperately, by seperate teams, so there wouldn't be the need for the AP team to take reinforcement from the ALiens team. I always thought AP is coming along well. More likely, the key people from Aliens are now working on Fallout New Vegas. The status about Aliens is still unclear, however. April 21, 200916 yr I find it somewhat hard to comprehend why Sega would flush millions of dollars of development down the toilet by canceling the game, unless they were really really disatisfied with what Obsidian had produced. Companies with financial problems do that all the time, especially in a recession. When people talk about cutting projects to save costs, they don't mean projects they're just considering. Statistically, there are far more games which are cancelled than ones that are finished, you just don't hear about most of them. April 27, 200916 yr I think an Aliens RPG is a great idea, and my hope is that Alpha Protocol and Fallout: NV are huge enough to get Obsidian the cash and clout necessary to finish the project.
