Zoma Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Stranglehold gameplay may be in question, but come on, no one could dispute their execution of using abilities isn't awesome?
Fearless_Jedi Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 From what I understand you will be able to acquire new abilities for each of the 4 different weapon classes (Pistol, SMG, Shotgun, Rifle). As far as what exactly they are/what they do and how they will look is still somewhat of a mystery. I am fairly certain that there wont be anything as extravagant as a gun kata. We've spoken a bit about some of them before. Pistols have Chain Shot, which lets you enter into a slo-motion aiming mode, which allows you to line up your aim on up to three exposed enemies, then return time to its normal speed and drop them all. SMGs have Bullet Storm, which lets you fire without needing to reload for a short period of time, and also increases the damage that you deal, I believe. I don't know that we've spoken about the other two, though...but I believe both of those powers have been revealed in previous coverage. Matthew Rorie
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Ugh, only 4 powers total? Can't you add at least 2 abilities for each weapon? I hated that about Mass Effect. The reasoning behind why I said abilities where "somewhat of a mystery" was because you had only told us about two. The mystery is that we don't know how many there are per weapon class, we don't know any in the rifle and shotgun class, and I don't believe it has been mentioned whether or not the abilities drain a stamina bar of some sort. Pidesco Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 There are two big items that differentiate AP from ME, though. One is that conversations are timed, one attempt only affairs, and the other is that AP will have proper melee and a stealth option. Furthermore, I'm hoping/expecting that the combat in AP will be a lot better than in ME, as ME's combat was mostly crap. If you add the things that Obsidian usually does better than Bioware, at the very least will be getting a vastly improved upon ME from Obsidian. If I worked in Obsidian's marketing departments, I'd try to distance AP form ME, though. More weapon abilities is always more fun. How many special abilities did weapons in Deus Ex have? I wouldn't judge a game only by the number of spells/abilities et.c. Hint: Deus Ex had about 4 times as many weapons and 4 times as many abilities (augs). So I think that in this case (only 4 weapons, each quite specialised), I think there's ample reason to judge based on the number of abilities. WILL is right. Even if it were just 2 per weapon that'd be infinitely better (and less boring and more replayable) than 1 per weapon.
Musopticon? Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 (edited) Though to be honest, Deus Ex's augs weren't anything to write home about. Around 5 were useful(invisibility, heatless image, soundless steps, regen and remote) the rest either degraded your reserves too fast to be actually useful or didn't have enough effect(I mean, raw strength, whee I can move crates) to matter. Not to mention, abilities seem to have a pure combat use in AP, so I wouldn't even start a direct comparison. Now, variety, that's where I agree. I really hope that the other skills have their own abilities as well. Though it would be kinda silly to not have one for explosives and martial arts, for instance. And as for weapons, sigh. I wish they'll have customization to some extent. That would remedy at least some of the lost opportunity. I mean, I get that each weapon is tied to a relevant skill, because the whole system is based on that, but we can only hope that weapons don't just recieve "an upgrade" every other level, but that there's actually several types per weapon class with different pros and cons. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 An actual weapon upgrade system, where we see the upgrades for example, would be quite worth it. It helps make a weapon feel yours. But first add more than one ability per weapon. <.< "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! Pop Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 MCA has expressed that he has particularly enjoyed writing technical dialogue used by PCs of a certain skill, so we know there will be that, at least, and that's quite a step up from ME. ME's dialogue skill system was highly unsophisticated. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!

Pop Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I wouldn't call it broken, just completely uninteresting. You could even see the responses you couldn't choose, for christ's sake. Funny you should mention that, because I've never used "heatless image" or "remote". I think I used strength because it allowed me to jump down from buildings (or was that another one?). I'm pretty sure that the others weren't useless though, except for maybe one or two. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!
Musopticon? Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I liked the one that made you completely undetectable to cameras. I honestly can't remember what the last aug was, but I'm partly sure that there was one which made it is possible to hack remotely. Nevertheless, all of the augs were pretty one-situation tricks. I honestly never used raw strength except for one box puzzle just to try it out. Combat strength was far more useful since you could instantly destroy combat bots with it and dragon tooth. The aim assist thing sucked all juice in a couple of seconds and I didn't see any point to the improved muscles thing that made you jump far and run fast. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Wrath of Dagon Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 There was nothing wrong with the concept of ME (except the linearity), it was the terrible execution where it completely fell flat. If Obs can do a better job executing, and add some great writing and dialog, AP can be a great game. "Moral indignation is a standard strategy for endowing the idiot with dignity." Marshall McLuhan

Oblarg Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Chainshot sounds pretty damn awesome if pulled off properly. There should *really* be two abilities per gun skill tree. And just for the record, infinite ammo and SMG's always being dual-wielded, while badass if you're going for a shoot em up game, don't fit in well with the subtle espionage genre. Just saying. Rostere Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 ... why do you assume that's all I judge the game by? Well, I do agree with everything you say except for that fewer abilities for your weapons is a sign of "dumbing down". Portal (for example) only had one gun with two abilities, but I thought it was a good game anyway. Most of the augs in Deus Ex were not tied directly to using any weapon, so that's a different thing. It is true that there were more weapons in Deus Ex. Of course, if you could choose anything you want for AP, I would like to have an infinite amount of abilities (or maybe the ability to create new abilities ). But it's my personal opinion that there are more important thing to a game than the number of guns/ modes of fire/ abilities. Hopefully, AP will not be all about shooting people in the head using as many different guns as possible. "Well, overkill is my middle name. And my last name. And all of my other names as well!"
Musopticon? Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 And we haven't even seen sniper rifles, bazookas, etc yet, it was only mentioned that the four weapon types are only ones that have unlimited ammo. IIRC, there was a mention someone that there would be powerful weapons, perhaps ones that you gain from special circumstances or for special missions, that would have limited ammo. Not counting scifi stuff, like the GEP gun, Deus Ex had smg, shottie, sniper rifle, several different pistols and melee weapons. It, however, didn't have hand-to-hand so I think we are pretty even right now. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears.
