Looks purdy. Would have prefered a Team Fortress 2 art direction and some of that No One Lives Forever charm, though.

Have no idea what the hell happened while I was away, though.

Anyway, welcome back Role-Player - I thought you were banned or something :shifty:

Banned myself from life, more like it.

Not really back, just cruisin'. Seems if I don't keep up with stuff then there's an avalanche of stuff to watch out for later on. I only learned about AP today, on a completely unrelated web search, on a computer that's not my own.

I feel a definite NOLF vibe from the characters so far, but we'll see. So far, it's hard to grasp what kind of direction they want to go with the game - light-hearted Bond-esque, Deus Ex brand subterfuge, or what.

Hi Roley, I've kept your fanclub alive!

Heya Pide! I said I'd pay a visit

Good to see you again, Mus. Er, even if I just see what you type. Start printing out those fanclub cards since I might have some surprises in store in the next couple of months.

As for direction, any talk about how AP might handle morals in the context of spy or secret service agent? Are we going to see a Bauer-styled jugular biting, human shield-totting and kneecap shooting, or a more traditional approach? And by traditional I totally mean doing your ninja thing and just whirling the Wiimote to answer yes or no when asked about the future of mankind.

I think I read at Codex "Role Player" was banned from here aeons ago

Anyway, reportedly Alpha Protocol is aiming towards "serious", real world problems and such in moral choices as showcased by them mentioning Syriana as big influence - clearly showcasing that your choices won't be "I steal lollipo or I won't" style. However the game seems at the same time to aim at Kill Bill feel and it has left some of us confused by how these two aspects are going to be put together :ermm:

Perhaps most concrete thing on choices comes from Avellone's recent blog update:

"In what game design phase do you think one should begin to think about moral issues in the game world, and why?

Generally, I think it should be considered as early as possible in the game design, preferably at the time that you decide upon the game's "theme." For our Aliens project, for example, the moral theme that we're trying to communicate was considered an important establishing point in our early pre-production phase (as it was for Mask of the Betrayer). "

Talks about Aliens RPG and MotB but there's no reason to think this is not the case on AP too. And more importantly:

"In our latest title, Alpha Protocol, we're presenting some of the moral choices within the context of the CIA operation itself - and the choices you make to achieve your mission or your goal can depend on how much you're willing to place others at risk."

What they probably mean is you'll be able to choose how many gallons of blood enemies will gush out. "You want some of this, foo?", and whats-his-name either quickdraws and snubs the jerk out with a single, magical bullet that blows his head off, or does a Ninja Scroll on him. Choices!

Just kidding. Seems interesting at this point. Thanks for the update :ermm:

Oh, and, I think I once posted here about how I was banned from the Codex by that cheap, malaysian e-thug. But not the other way around, IIRC.

guess I got those in wrong order then :ermm:

pop said this based on earliest mag scans on the game :ermm:

- Obsidian is attempting to accomodate all playing styles. The example given was interrogating an informant. Bribing him got you the most amount of info, persuasion yielded less info but caused the least number of ethical problems (apparently) and killing him netted you no info but cash with which to buy things.

souns promising (I had completely forgot this!)

Don't worry, it happens :shifty:

I'm just intrigued by how these persuasion methods will work - if by standard skill checks, simple cause and effect, or more physical approaches. What I'd like to see regarding the concepts of persuasion or torture - mind, not necessarily in Obsidian's game, but on a general level - would be to actually decide on how to extract information. Presumably, any developer can set up a scene reminiscent of Reservoir Dogs with the macabre dance and the sliced ear, but giving players the tools and letting them set up the stage step by step (ie., location, target, tools, the precise ritual of things, etc.) is something else entirely.

I guess I want a Dexter simulator or something, r00fles.

Torture only works in the movies, mate. Still, I suppose that would qualify it for video games. I can't triple roll a car fifty feet through the air and sprint off afterwards in real life either.
