will there be facehuggers?

Featured Replies

Well, it is always possible to reaload the game if the facehugger gets you. :)

Perhaps relying on that in game design, however, may not be the best way to create a game.

Let me know if you ever make a post that isn't spam. :)

Sarcasm =/= spam, the point was valid, if not directly phrased.

People here have all kinds of notions of what an aliens RPG is going to be like on a fundimental level, and we still have little information on if we're dealing with somthing more akin to KotoR or Dungeon Seige. Your guesses about the gameplay mechanics are just that and leave you little scope to get offended about being called over them.

I wasn't making guesses about gameplay mechanics. I was pointing out obvious game design flaws which pixies somehow managed to have a beef with, if his poor attempt at sarcasm was meant to convey a real point, as you say.

Honestly, I'd like to see you or him justify how 'his point' was valid.

My point: Being offered multiple options, then being forced to choose option 1 by the game, to avoid instant death or some other negative effect, isn't actually offering options.

His point: "That's stupid. To extend your logic, why do games force us to use weapons in combat? They don't offer any choices!!!"

1) We buy most computer games because one of the things we want to do is kill things. Weapons are the point of the game. We don't desire choice in this matter, other than what weapon to use.

2) That's in no way an extension of my logic; pixies confuses my point with some extreme quest for more choice in games.

3) Games may force us to use weapons, but they aren't claiming to offer alternatives that don't actually exist.

So forgive me if I misconstrue pixies poorly thought out sarcasm as spam.

Lajciak: A lot of people hate reloading and rarely resort to it. Supposedly it's a pretty bad idea to rely on it in game design, yeah.

I guess my real point is nothing to do with helmets or choices, but more to do with the belief that instant-kill creatures have little to no place in computer games, outside cinematics, cutscenes and scripted events.

I agree. And really, that's the issue here. In the movies, and the fps games, the facehuggers are are insta-death. Unless you give a fair amount of early warning and allow dodging, facehuggers are gotcha-traps and there's not much outside the face protection that can plausibly be implemented to protect against that.

And gotcha-traps belong in to Quake, back to the mid-nineties.

Yeah. I guess giving forewarning could work. You know facehuggers are around, but they could jump out at any moment. That could be scary. But then, if the entire point is so that you put your anti-facehugger mask is on, then the facehuggers are no longer a threat, which isn't scary. To be honest I don't know how they could implement facehuggers and maintain the scariness factor they had in the movies. Maybe it comes back to the minigame idea to shake/shoot them off?

1) Isn't really something that would do much for either argument, because I can easily and truthfully say that I don't buy games just for the end result of killing things. That might be something I would think for a game that was purely about just killing things, like maybe a FPS or something, but when it would come to an RPG, killing things isn't the reason I would buy the game. To say "we" don't desire choice on whether or not we have to use weapons in a game is a pretty huge assumption, and I think it's false. The only reason I'm not outright claiming it to be false is because I don't know who you are including in this "we" because I personally try to avoid combat a lot in RPGs that I play, and I desire choice in whether or not I get into combat or not.

2) I assumed your point was that they shouldn't give us false choices. Like the false choice that we would have a wide array of different weapons all the time, but then we'd come to find out that there's only really one or two actual effective weapons and using anything less than that would get us killed. Because that's my image of the game.

3) Alien RPG may force us to use a facemask, but they aren't offering alternatives that don't actually exist.

The reason that I wasn't actually making direct points is because I thought it was ridiculous for anyone to be arguing over such a trivial thing, and the arguments are just based on assumptions that you seemed to be pretending was the status quo. "Well, that's ridiculous, because if they did that, then that would mean that they would also be doing this." "Man, if they ever added in facemasks, they'd most certainly do so in a way to pretend we'd have choice when we really don't. That's the only conceivable way they could ever implement it."

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the galaxy. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips. I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my viens. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk, and free throw. I am there.

You're claming that bad gameplay balancing removes player choice by forcing a player down the only path that doesn't nerf his character. You then get offended when someone says 'no ****'. haha

BTW, to make my point clear, if facehuggers are going to be in the game, and there's no way to protect against them (maybe the only protection is to dodge and blast them before the next facegrabbing attempt), AND no way to "cure" their "implant", then yeah I wouldn't want them there.

This being an RPG, the player should have at least some method of protecting himself or herself, and dealing with the problem when that happens -- not a "game over" message once they're attached to face. I understand the Aliens movies make the death of the implanted person an inevitability, maybe the CRPG could break ground by offering some way to "cure" the problem - but yes, maybe it's neither easy to find, or employ.

But, as always, that's just MHO.

It's easy. Go the headcrab route.

"Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

I think it should be possible for player to have his way with a facehugger.

Make sure you have anti-dissolvement rubber put on before you hump.

Never know, in the very case it has yet to have its cherry popped, it can be corrosively painful experience for both sides.

Always wear your goggles in case of facehuggers!

Alien sex scenes are always interesting... even when the alien isn't really humanoid. :)
